Fr. Rocco Puopolo SX Presides at NRVC Closing Mass

Fr. Rocco attended the National Religious Vocations Conference convocation in Buffalo, NY. Excitement and enthusiasm for the Catholic faith abounded! See for yourself on their Facebook page.
Fr. Rocco states: " It was an honor, a grace and "holy fun" to preside at the 30th Anniversary Mass of the National Religious Vocation Convocation in Buffalo NY. The music by Mikey Needleman and his band was just wonderful. The Spirit of gratitude, joy as well as realistic challenge in these times that we live in as Church, as society and as humanity were all gathered into one and made real!!! Jesus lives!! And we have to spread the Good News of that! (BTW: my African Gara Vestments knocked their socks off!!)"

It was fitting that Fr. Rocco celebrate the closing Mass on Nov. 4th as it was the eve of the Feast of St. Guido Conforti, founder of the Xaverian Missionaries, on Nov. 5th.  Learn all about this beloved saint here.

Faith, Public Life Intersect at the Riverside

The Riverside Innovation Hub is convinced of two things. First, we are fairly certain young adults do not want to be targeted by efforts to win them back to church. They would much rather be participants and leaders in efforts to target pressing issues impacting their neighborhoods and the globe. Second, we are fairly certain innovation, theologically understood, is not the creation of new, shiny programs. Rather, it is best understood as vocation. It is that thing that happens at the intersection where we are simultaneously aware of our neighbors' deep desires, our deep desires, and God's deep desires. Innovation happens when we are responsive to God's call to be in life-giving relationships with and for our neighbor. Discover more.
Secularization as a "Sign of the Times"

Father Arturo Sosa, Superior General of the Jesuits delivered an presentation at the Synod of Bishops on youth, faith and vocational discernment, focusing on the theme of secularization. Fr. Sosa proposed a necessary exercise of discernment, as part of the confrontation of our ways of thinking with reality. This exercise can lead to an understanding of secularization as a sign of the times, a way for the Holy Spirit to guide our reflection and action today. Learn more.

A Small Step Forward for Human Rights

[N]egotiations are taking place at the UN in Geneva for the Binding Treaty on Business and Human Rights, an instrument that could protect the rights and the environment of many communities around the world.   Relying on individual States  to promote and guarantee the protection of human rights, when powerful TNCs operate worldwide, is not enough. Without a Treaty there will still be  cases of territorial expropriation, environmental pollution and climate injustice , as well as imposition of  new models of development and consumption. All Survivors Day

Catholics around the world demand justice for clergy sexual abuse survivors. For the first time in the history of the Catholic Church, protesters from around the world stand united in their call for transparency and atonement to survivors of clergy sexual abuse.
The date of November 3rd is symbolic. It is the feast day of the patron saint for social justice, St. Martin de Porres. Catholics seek justice for survivors of clergy sexual abuse around the world. This date is also significant as it follows All Saints Day on November 1st, and All Souls Day on November 2nd. November 3rd is "All Survivors Day."

Vatican safeguarding expert, Professor Fr Hans Zollner SJ, has described a one-day conference on child abuse, as a "courageous, forward looking step" that could act as a model for monastic and religious communities to participate in the healing process for victims.  Fr Zollner, a member of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, was keynote speaker at the event, held at Ealing Abbey in London and attended by survivors of abuse, and many involved in safeguarding, counselling and education.
