The meal-making service trip to Burlington is almost full. We have spots for a couple more people. If you have signed up, be prepared to meet on November 17 at 7:00 a.m. on the St. John parking lot. Please bring a
water bottle and a sack lunch.

St John Family Rosary/Prayer Group
Objectives:
1. Increase the engagement of our families, especially our children, in the Catholic faith through prayer, devotions, and network with other families with children and the same concerns.
2. Pray for our children and families.
3. Pray with our children and families.
We meet once a month on a Saturday to pray the Rosary, followed by a potluck and discussion.
Our next rosary meeting is Sat., Nov. 10th in Egan Hall at 6pm.

We will be celebrating
Veterans Day at all Masses
November 10th and 11th.
Come celebrate Veterans Day to honor our living and deceased friends and relatives who have and are currently serving in our Armed Forces.
This year we are suggesting those being honored wear an award or decoration that you feel is appropriate. We are also asking everyone to bring a friend or relative who is currently serving or has served in the past to Mass. If your loved one is no longer with us please bring a framed photo to one of our three Masses.

The sacrament of Confirmation for North Seattle Deanery Youth
will be celebrated in 2019 at:
St. Catherine Parish, May 11 at 5:00 pm
St. Mark Parish, May 15 at 7:00 pm
ALL St John teens who will be 16 by May 2019 are invited to join!
We will host a Family Information Night on
November 13th at 7pm in the church. (New location)
Preparation classes will start in January and be hosted at two parishes. Confirmation candidates will have their choice of class time & location:
Option 1: St. Mark's Parish, Tuesdays at 7:00pm to 8:30pm
Option 2: Our Lady of the Lake Parish, Saturday mornings 11am-12:30pm.

Our Door is Open!
Here at St John, we meet once a month, on the second Wednesday, with those interested in learning more about Catholicism, about our church, and about our faith. The meetings are casual, with plenty of time for questions and discussion, and are open to all!
The next meeting is Wednesday, November 14th at 7pm.
We will meet in the new Admin Building (former Rectory).

Let's go to the Skagit Valley & make a big meal!
Here's a
service opportunity for us, St. John. The Tri-city Food Bank that hosts our kids for the youth migrant camp trip every summer is looking for help on
Saturday, November 17 (note date correction). The plan is to leave St. John around 7:30 am, drive to Burlington, help prepare a Thanksgiving meal for some 400 needy people, and return home around 4 pm. Jose, the dynamic leader of the Youth Migrant Project, is looking for anywhere from 5 to 30 volunteers. So we'll take the first 30 who sign up. It's bound to be a beautiful and meaningful Saturday.

I'm coming to the end of my year of Bible reading, following the Bible in One Year app by the Alpha folks. In the course of my Bible reading, I found Proverbs to be a strange book. It seems to me that the proverbs in Proverbs fall into two categories, obvious and useless. Now that thought worries me. Another way to say it is, there are proverbs I understand and proverbs I don't. While browsing in an Amazon book store recently, I found a book titled God's Wisdom for Navigating Life: A Year of Daily Devotions in the Book of Proverbs, by Timothy and Kathy Keller. Timothy Keller is the founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, and author of several widely read books on faith. I'm hoping to learn the wisdom of Proverbs from a wise teacher.
As students often are, I'm impatient to get to the 'answer'. So, while I plan to work my way through Keller's book over the next year, I turned first to the last day's devotion in Keller's book, figuring I would find his ultimate wisdom nugget there. Here's the money paragraph, written as a prayer:
"Lord, I have learned that wisdom is only a by-product of wanting something more than wisdom -- to see God! Aim at knowing you, and you get wisdom thrown in. Aim just at wisdom -- in order to be successful -- and you get neither. At last I see it. It took me long enough. I praise you for your patience with me. Amen."
Or, in the words of one of our hymns, Seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things will be given unto you, Allelu, Alleluia.
