Dear Families,
I am frequently in awe of the talented students at Oregon High School.
This week we'll showcase many diverse talents within our student body as "The Wizard of Oz" fall musical opens. Between the cast and ensemble, the pit orchestra, and the tech crew, there will be more than 100 students involved in the production. Their commitment for the past several months will be on display in the Performing Arts Center this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This will be a show that is not to be missed.
This past weekend we had another team come together to demonstrate their remarkable talent and commitment. The OHS boys' soccer team brought home the WIAA D-2 State Championship on Saturday. The championship capped a record setting season as the team had 16 shutouts on the year. This high achieving group of student-athletes represent OHS well on the athletic field and in the classroom, boasting a combined GPA of 3.43. Congratulations to the players and coaches!
Quarter grades will be posted on Infinite Campus by the end of the day Thursday. Remember that these quarter grades are somewhat of a progress grade as it is the semester grade that goes to transcript. That said, they are a good indicator of your work in progress and, perhaps, a call to action. We are here four nights per week with Panther After School Study (3:30-5:00 pm) and on Saturday mornings (9:00-11:00 am). If you need anything please reach out. We're here for you.
Sincerely,
Jim

Why continue on with Spanish all 4 years at OHS? AP Spanish 5 is taught here at OHS in connection with UW Green Bay.
Students who are enrolled in Spanish 5 have the option to receive college credits through UW Green Bay by receiving a B or better in Spanish 5. Upon completion of the course, the students walk away with 14 college credits of Spanish that are guaranteed transferable throughout all UW system schools. Many private and out of state schools accept these credits as well. This year we have 65 OHS students taking advantage of this program.

Alliance for a Healthier Generation
|
There is an organization called the Alliance for a Healthier Generation who recognizes schools who are among the healthiest in the country. This year the organization weighed a lot of factors including the number of students involved in extracurricular activities, the percentage of students enrolled in PE classes, the school's policies on healthy food choices and much more. This year 13 schools from Wisconsin were recognized AND Oregon High School was one of three at the high school level. A banner was presented at Homecoming to recognizing OHS as one of the among the healthiest schools in the nation.

The use of cell devices in the Oregon School District is predicated on a "responsible use" policy. Cell phones can present a problem for students (and adults) when use borders on obsession. There is research that indicates students overestimate their ability to multi-task and that the mere presence of a device in their pocket or bag can drive them to distraction with every buzz of a notification. Student use in classrooms here are under the direction of a teacher. The use of social media to post pictures, images or other text based messages is not permitted in classes. There is a reasonable expectation for privacy in schools and it is against policy to post images of students or staff. Times when cell phones are strictly prohibited are in locker rooms, bathrooms and changing areas. Also, students may not take a digital image of an assessment for any purpose. When student use violates respectful and responsible behavior expectations, administration may become involved. This can result in loss of privilege, temporary removal of device from classrooms and restriction of cell phone when inappropriate use is frequent and/or chronic.
