I hope this finds your November off to a terrific start. This is already the 13th week of 2018-2019 and we will be issuing Progress Reports for second nine weeks on Friday, November 16th. As for this week's update, we have selected several success stories that I think you will enjoy that help to capture the variety of student activities occurring at this point in the fall. Please be sure to mark the November 13th date for our Annual Family Literacy Night. Quiz Bowl Team
On Monday afternoon, our Quiz Bowl team traveled to Olympia High School for their final regular season meet of the year. The team faced a tough challenge as Olympia is the defending league champion. The team also faced off against West Orange in a rematch of our first round playoff match last year (which we won).

The team's final record is 5-6, though we still have an outside shot of making the playoffs. The last two weeks of the season are bye weeks. Our MVP for our final match was junior Ajay Narain, who contributed a hefty 110 points to the cause. As we are only losing one senior, Nick Nguyen, so we should rebound with a strong season next year.

The following students traveled to our final match of the year on Monday. Please congratulate them on a hard-fought season if you see them around campus.
  • Nicholas Nguyen - team captain
  • Ajay Narain
  • Conor O'Malley
  • Landon Nayab
  • Phuong Ton

Teacher Walking 100 Miles for Children's Cancer Research
Mr. Martin, Special Education Teacher, will be walking across Florida to raise cancer awareness and to help local children with cancer this month.

Mr. Martin being interviewed on Tampa's Channel 8 about his experience and the upcoming
cancer walk which begins on November 19th from Tampa.

On November 19-21, Rafael Martin, a Special Education teacher and cancer survivor, will begin a 100 mile walk that will take him from a Subway restaurant in Tampa to a Subway restaurant at the Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital in Orlando.

He is walking in order to raise donations for the children who are fighting cancer at the Children's Hospital. He hopes to raise enough donations to buy the children Christmas presents so they can enjoy the holiday.  Rafael was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2014.  Since then he has had 3 surgeries, radiation and hormone treatments to fight his cancer.  He has dedicated his life to help other survivors fight cancer.

Did You Know???
Job and wage gains by education level (just released)

Normally on the first Friday of each month, the U.S. Department of Labor releases their jobs report. They just ran the latest release for the month of October on November 2. The nearby Wall Street Journal chart shows how wages have grown and the number of jobs have grown since the fall of 2010.

While the changes in wages for those with less than a high school diploma has shot up in the past year due to the surge in the U.S. economy, those workers still earn far less than others.

Weekly wages for the third quarter:
  • Less than a high school diploma = $551.00
  • High school graduates = $722.25
  • Bachelor's degree and higher = $1,303.00

* Please click on the chart to make it interactive via The Wall Street Journal and you can see how things have changed by time period. (When you open the article, scroll down to the chart you see above - fully interactive, but please switch buttons from "industry" to "education.")
