11/4 ~ joy in the midst of despair.

Whether your candidate won or lost, whether the issue you worked so hard on passed or was defeated, we have access to joy. This post-election service will recognize that somewhere in this nation, people are feeling despair over the results. Even if we are not, we will face times of despair at some point in our journey. Odd as it sounds, despair is the perfect incubator for joy. Come find out why.

NOTE: As part of the Peace is the People's Power event (see listing below under Community News), we will be ringing bells during our Sunday service. Please bring a bell or ringing bowl to church to join in this celebration and call for peace.

Anyone interested in getting to know our hymnals better is invited to a 90-minute exploration Tuesday November 13 at 6:30 pm in the Great Hall.
 
handling grief workshop
Are you struggling with loss? All Souls will be sponsoring a 4 week grief workshop meeting on Mondays, at 6 PM, 11/19 through 12/10. This workshop will explore ways to cope in the midst of loss of all types, whether through death of a loved one, loss of a relationship or job, etc. The workshop will be $20 a session, with the full $80 due on the first night. Space is limited so please contact Rev. Rost to reserve a spot. Facilitators are Barb Elstun and Ruth Meinking
Barb holds a Masters Degree in Social Work from New Mexico Highlands University. Barb is a trained facilitator for the "Color of Fear" a film dealing with racial discrimination. She is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS),  along with numerous trainings in behavioral interventions. Barb knows through; consistency, good communication, setting boundaries, goal setting, research based interventions and meeting people where they are at, that people can gain a knowledge base to create skill sets to obtain their goals.

Have you registered for Religious Exploration (RE) at All Souls? Just check out our on-line registration. We ask that you fill out a new registration form EACH year. Please register your kids (babies through youth group) now so we can better plan, be informed, and keep you updated. There is no charge to register.

Our Air Element class explored Balance in Our Ecosystem. They heard a Nigerian folk tale that showed the consequences of not living in balance with nature and performed an ecosystem roleplay. Thank you to Linda Rosetti for teaching and to Cara Van Dyke for assisting. Our Fire Element class examined Building a Community of Forgiveness. They discussed and charted various laws, crimes, and punishments and did a forgiveness meditation. Thank you to Kathleen Brannan for teaching.

Our Air Element class (for younger kids) will take a look at Habitats. Its quote is "Nature will bear the closest inspection. She invites us to lay our eye level with her smallest leaf, and take an insect view of its plain."- Henry David Thoreau, 19th-century T ranscendentalist. Our Fire Element class (for older kids) is entitled The Blessing of Imperfections and its quote is "If you look closely at a tree you'll notice its knots and dead branches, just like our bodies. What we learn is that beauty and imperfection go together wonderfully." - Matthew Fox, theologian.

Thank you to Erika Fore and Mac Sergeant for being co-advisors in Youth Group last Sunday as they wrapped up discussions from the previous week. This Sunday we will be unleashing our creativity as we start work on a special on-going project! 

7th-9th grade owl
Our next session is this Sunday, 11/4, from noon to 1:30 pm in the RE Assembly Area. We will begin to wrap up our unit entitled You as a Sexual Being. There is no OWL 11/18 and 11/25 as we take off for Fall Break.

11/14, 6-8pm, at Creekside Success Center, 3850 Pony Tracks Drive, "Preventing Youth Suicide. . " Hosted by the Jason Foundation . You are invited to attend a presentation by The Jason Foundation, Inc. on the prevention of the "silent epidemic" of youth suicide. The Jason Foundation, Inc. was founded in 1997 by Clark Flatt after the tragic death of his son, Jason.  Flatt is now a nationally recognized speaker who helps equip young people, educators and parents with the tools and resources to help identify and assist at-risk youth.
Event is hosted by District 49 and Peak View Behavioral Health.

11/16, 6:30-8:30pm, at Iliff School of Theology, Denver, " In Our Own Words: Women, Religion and Choice ." You are invited to this free event to explore women's and abortion rights from a faith-based perspective. Two nationally regarded religious scholars will discuss their books and beliefs. Join us to hear and meet:
  • Dr. Monique Moultrie. Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at Georgia State University, author of Passionate and Pious: Religious Media and Black Women's Sexuality, and
  • Dr. Rebecca Todd Peters, Presbyterian Minister and Religious Studies Professor at Elon University in North Carolina, author of Trust Women: A Progressive Argument for Reproductive Justice.

Hosted by Pikes Peak Womxn for Liberation. Pikes Peak Womxn for Liberation will be observing the 20th Annual International Trans Day of Remembrance in solidarity with PAGE (Peak Area Gender Expressions). We have created this event in solidarity to spread the word about the event with permission from PAGE. Please join us!

peace is the people's power
Peace is the People's Power is an event celebrating the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day and the 40th anniversary of the Pikes Peak Justice and Peace Commission. A special set of bells is being made from guns to commemorate the occasion by Raw Tools, Inc. All are invited at 2:00 PM Saturday here at All Souls to help dedicate the bells to the work of peace. Come ring the bells on Sunday from noon to three at the Penrose library and witness a demonstration of the Raw Tools practice of turning guns into tools of peace.

Also, see the listing under Local Activism and Awareness for a separate event hosted by the PPJPC later on Saturday evening.

Please keep All Souls member, Tim Cafferty, in your thoughts and prayers. He was hit by a vehicle while driving home from a job in Elizabeth, CO and is in Parker Adventist Hospital with several broken ribs and a punctured lung.
