Change is in the air...
The change in temperature is upon us. I know it can feel like it takes forever for real Fall to come to us in this area, but the change is beginning. Crisper mornings and maybe a raindrop or two? Just the beginning of our seasonal changes.

You may have noticed the change in seating in our sanctuary and the change in how our parish hall and entryway are set up. We’re trying new things that Deacon Tom’s Raising the Roof  group has been brainstorming. Things to enliven our space and improve our overall hospitality.

Hospitality is what these things are all about. We are focused on making people feel welcome into the space here, making sure they feel like there is room for them and a place for them regardless of their age or life situation.

Church doesn’t have to feel daunting or like a place where we’re going to be evaluated for our suitability to be a part of the worshiping community. We want every person who takes the risk to show up on a Sunday, to feel like they can relax into the space, the worship and the fellowship.

God’s love for all people asks us to extend this kind of hospitality. Let’s keep brainstorming who we are and how to open our doors and hearts to all who come!

Service Times
8 a.m. Sunday Service
The early service begins at 8 a.m. This is a simple communion service without music using Rite II. The quiet service will appeal to some every week and to others occasionally as a quieter way to worship.

10 a.m. Service
The 10 a.m. service is supported by the St. Augustine Choir. Sunday School begins at 10 a.m., except on some Holy days and special occasions. The FISH Youth Group meets 6 to 8 p.m. for dinner, lessons and worship most Sundays.

Centering Prayer

One of the themes that is emerging in our ongoing practice of Centering Prayer is the awareness that God just wants to spend time with us. In response to the enthusiasm growing around this feeling, our Centering Prayer gatherings are now offered Mondays at 6:30 p.m. and Fridays at noon. The former Tuesday evening gathering has been changed to Monday. We hope that you will join us and see how contemplation can enrich your own experience.



Stewardship
Giving in Gratitude 2019
         
Sunday, September 30 th was Gratitude Sunday, a time for us to bring our financial commitments to the Church. The generosity of this congregation is amazing and so appreciated, as we continue to be a special place of worship and service to our neighbor.

If you have not made a pledge for 2019, please feel free to contact us by email or phone. If you are not making a pledge this year, that information is helpful to us as well, as we begin our follow-up to complete our stewardship season. Please ask, too, if you need a copy of our printed materials with important information about St. Augustine's finances and about our vision for being the hands and feet and voice of Christ for others.

Adult Formation Classes



Short Stories by Jesus: Our class studying the parables continues! Through October, we will be studying the Pearl of Great Price (10/2), the Mustard Seed (10/16), the Laborers in the Vineyard (10/23) and the Widow and the Judge (10/30). The class will take a break on 10/9. It is not too late to join! The class meets Tuesdays at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Episcopal 101: Join us every third Sunday for a quick discussion of all things Episcopal. We meet in the Sunday School room after the 10 a.m. service. Do you have questions about the liturgy, our tradition, or why we do things a certain way? Our next meeting will be Sunday, October 21 st .
The Gathering Inn Hosting Program
Every second Wednesday of the month, we host 70-plus homeless men, women and children, guests of The Gathering Inn, for a great meal and a safe place to sleep. Due to some changes in people's schedule and availability, we need a few more volunteers for meal preparation, coordination of volunteers and grocery shopping.

Sign-up sheets are at the Welcome Center in Canterbury Hall. The next hosting event is Wednesday, October 10 th. This is a very rewarding ministry, and if you are interested in learning about how to become involved or even more involved, please contact Jim Quinney at:

The Gathering Inn Donations
The Gathering Inn is looking for all types of winter clothing. The need is also great for adult jeans, new men's and women's underwear, new or gently used colored T-shirts, men's belts and adult-size socks.

The Inn is also in need of liquid detergent and bleach for the mountains of laundry they do daily in the laundry room. In addition, large cans of coffee would be appreciated. All donations can be left in the grocery cart in the entrance way . Every item is greatly appreciated.

As always, unused travel-sized toiletry items are needed. Please place your donations in the grocery cart at the entrance to Canterbury Hall.

The Gathering Inn
Sleeping Bag Drive

The Gathering Inn hosts homeless guests who sleep on church floors after a dinner is supplied by the church assigned for that night. Unfortunately, there are nights that the churches cannot host all the people who would like to be sheltered.

To that end, The Gathering Inn is having a drive on October 24 th , to receive donations of gently used or new sleeping bags for those guests. The bags will be spray-painted with a recorded number to ensure their return, or the individual will not be reissued another bag.

Your help would be appreciated. The sleeping bags can be brought to the church by October 24 th . The donations can also be taken to The Gathering Inn Roseville location, 201 Berkeley Ave, Roseville.

Perspective on The Gathering Inn

We are known as the "Chicken Church" for good reason, thanks to Jack Dillon's superior barrel chicken grilling skills, as well as all those who help with our monthly Gathering Inn hosting events. Over 40 Placer County churches participate in this effort.

According to Keith Diederich, CEO of The Gathering Inn, 27 of the guests at a recent Church dinner were children. This alarming number of children reflects the increasing number of homeless families in our area. The disparity in the cost of living accommodations and income levels keeps growing. In our area, the average price of a one bedroom apartment is $1210 a month, according to statistics cited by The Gathering Inn. This is an impossible amount for those living under the poverty line.

Within Rocklin and Roseville, there are over 37,000 people, in total, who have income less than $2010 per month, according to data provided by Placer County's Health and Human Services Department. The Department translates this to 22% of the population of Roseville and 17% of Rocklin.

By our participation in The Gathering Inn's programs, we share our abundance and the love of Christ with those in need.
St. James Grocery Cart Ministry

Thanks to everyone who generously brings food items for the St. James Pantry. The pantry serves a small niche in Lincoln, and the needs are pretty specific: flour and corn tortillas, pinto beans, canned chicken or tuna, rice, cereal, fruit cups and peanut butter.

Please make sure your items are not past the expiration date and are unopened.

The grocery cart is located at the entrance to Canterbury Hall. Thank you for your donations.
Meal Train Ministry

The Meal Train Ministry is an online calendar that organizes delivery of meals for parish families in times of need.

Lunch with Pastor Maryellen

Please join Pastor Maryellen at noon on the third Wednesday of the month for an informal, unrehearsed and fun time of conversation. No program, no agenda, no reservations required. Just bring your lunch to St. Augustine. A homemade dessert will be provided. The next date for lunch with Pastor Maryellen is scheduled for Wednesday, October 17 th .
St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room
A group of volunteers from St. Augustine Church serves meals at the St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room the third Thursday of each month. They volunteer from approximately 9:15 a.m. until 1:45 p.m., helping prepare, cook and serve a warm meal for those in need.

Approximately two to three hours of standing are involved. All food is provided, and no cooking experience is needed.
 
Volunteers include Jack Dillon, John Redmond, Rob and Deidre Shonk, Catherine Beckman, Jim and Stephanie Tilton, Jim and Carla Dolislager, Rick and Janice Stenzel, Lyn Fuson, Linda Peterson, Steve Broce and Kathyrn Jordan.

Trunk or Treat Announcement
Trunk-or-Treat has been cancelled due to the large number of similar events in our community. Thank you to those who offered excitement and assistance. 
On Sunday, November 4th, we will host our first ever Fall Parents' Brunch. All parents of Nursery and Sunday School - aged children are invited to a free brunch following the 10 a.m. service. This is a children’s choir day, and child care will be provided for those not in the choir.

Join us for a great opportunity to connect with other parents and your Children’s Ministry Coordinator. Also, you can provide feedback about the children’s programs and offer suggestions for the new year.

Seniors First
"Care Kit" Sunday

Recently our congregation packed 48 “Care Kits” - shoebox size plastic containers filled with goodies. Each box included a pack of note cards, bar of soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, lip balm, deodorant, hand soap, a pot holder and a dish towel. 

At the end of the assembly line, parishioners were given a blank note card with an envelope and encouraged to write cheery messages of love and care to the recipients.

Boxes were piled three feet high in the Sunday School room while the Daughters of the King went through them to be sure each box contained all items, especially the congregation's notes. The boxes were picked up at the Church and distributed by Seniors First, an umbrella charity that offers a wide range of quality programs for seniors living in Placer County. 

The project was funded by the Mission/Outreach Committee who partnered with The Daughters of the King. The event was organized by Peggy Doyle.

The St. Augustine Chapter of Daughters of the King meets on the second Sunday of each month following the 10 a.m. service.

The group will meet Sunday, October 14 th following the 10 a.m. service for its regular meeting.

Rhonda Wampler will host the November 11 th meeting at her home. Members will reveal their secret prayer partners at that event.

Brotherhood of St. Andrew




The Brotherhood of St. Andrew holds its regular monthly meetings at 9 a.m. in Canterbury Hall the second Saturday morning of the month. Coffee and breakfast are served. All men and boys are welcome and encouraged to attend a meeting.

"Even if you are not a member of the Brotherhood, and just have an interest in what we do, you are welcome to join us for breakfast," said Rob Shonk, Director. If you have an interest in learning about the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, please contact Rob or Secretary John Redmond.

The Brotherhood will be planning for a second Bingo Night/Spaghetti Feed sometime next year. The group has also scheduled its annual summer BBQ for June 9 th , following the 10 a.m. service.

The Brotherhood is planning a big membership drive for the month of October. "We are looking for men in the Church who are interested in joining the Brotherhood as full-fledged members, or as Associate members who would be willing to volunteer or participate at Brotherhood events."

The October 13 th Brotherhood meeting will need to be changed due to scheduling conflicts at the Church. Watch for an email with the new date and time.

Prayer Shawl
Ministry
It is believed that the origin of the prayer shawl can be found in the books of Numbers and Deuteronomy in the Old Testament. Moses wrote that God instructed him to have the men make tassels for the four corners of their cloaks to remember God's commands. Some Christians believe that Jesus wore such a shawl and, today, wish to follow His example.

Wherever it started, there has been a resurgence in recent years to provide such shawls to people who need a visible sign of caring and comfort to face life's more difficult challenges. Members of our ministry either knot or crochet the shawls with very soft, washable yarn that can be easily cared for and is very comfortable.

The St. Augustine Prayer Shawl ministry began in 2011 and, to date, has given away almost 250 shawls. Our group gathers every second Monday of the month at the Church at 1:30 p.m. to work on our projects and enjoy each other's company.

Companion's Corner

One Dozen
I suddenly realized that we have journeyed together for 12 years! A note in my files says that in September of 2006 I first wrote an article called The Companion’s Corner. You and I have experienced much in those 12 years. Many changes have occurred, and some of you have moved and tell me that you still read the newsletter. I thank you for staying in touch and telling me that you still come to the Corner.

I’ll share a portion of that first article for our October time together:

“The walk to Emmaus was seven miles. The day was hot, the air heavy with discouragement. Two companions walked slowly, providing solace to one another. The crucifixion weighed mightily on them. As they trudged along, a stranger drew near, gently questioned them, and provided scriptural insights. His quiet teachings shortened the road, gave comfort and made them feel like a fire burning in us."

As we walk the road of life, we are often provided with spiritual companions where Christ makes himself known to us. The spirit of Christ IS the miraculous "third" in our lives.

Life’s spiritual road is filled with unexpected turns, obstacles, feasts and occasional picnics! It is my prayer that some of the monthly articles in this Corner will provide "food for the journey."

Thanks to those of you who sit with me "in the Corner" as we journey together.
