News From the Field:
Replenishing Seeds, Restoring Resiliency

Phillip Family Farmers pick-up seeds. After their family farm was destroyed during Typhoon Mangkhut.
Typhoon Mangkhut hammered the Northern Philippines in September, causing over $800 million in total damages throughout the region.  All of our partner farmers at the Benguet Association of Seed Savers (BASS) experienced massive crop loss and structural damages.

Despite these impacts, we are very pleased to share the news that all of the seeds in our Seed Library remained in tact! Two weeks ago all the BASS Members were able to checkout seeds to help them as they begin the long journey to re-build their farms.

This is a real world example of the importance of communities having access to seed libraries and locally adapted seeds. Each of the seed distributed have already been grown in the Philippines, so we know they are adapted to the local climate.  Access to a seed library has enabled the BASS members to quickly re-plant quality seeds they know will work on their farms rather than having to purchase expensive, chemically treated seeds.

While the impacts of climate change in the Philippines (tied for 4th as the most climate vulnerable nation) are only getting stronger, seed libraries are a huge step towards building resiliency and ensuring communities can adapt in the face of frequent typhoons.
