November 8, 2018

World Compass Academy engages and inspires learners in a safe, challenging, and individualized learning environment, which cultivates and fosters character, a lifelong love of learning, and the skills to engage in the global community.

Please join us for Taste of World Compass TONIGHT, November 8, from 6:00-8:00pm. This is a community potluck and evening of parent education. There will be student presentations, mini classes on education topics, and school information presentations. Come for one session or for the whole time. Bring a friend who wants to learn more about our school. Children are welcome. See you there!

Last Day for the Book Fair!

Today is the last day to shop at the Book Fair. We are open all day, with extended hours during Taste of World Compass until 8:00pm.  Everyone who makes a purchase during Taste of World Compass will be entered into a raffle for a book gift basket. Get a head start on your holiday shopping. Hope to see you there and thanks for your support!

Open Enrollment for K-8

Incoming siblings of current students, Founding Families, and children of Staff must complete Open Enrollment through DCSD's Open Enrollment Page by December 3 at 4:00pm to be eligible for priority enrollment.

All K-8 siblings who complete Open Enrollment by December 3 at 4:00pm are given priority and will be enrolled in any available spots before new students from the general public. All Preschool and Pre-K siblings interested in 2019-20 enrollment should complete the Preschool Application available on our website after January 9, 2019.

All families who have completed Open Enrollment will need to log back into their DCSD EngageED Parent Portal account after December 10 at 8:00am to view/accept/deny all enrollment offers. Families will have until December 17 at 4:00pm to accept or deny any offers. If families do not accept or deny offers, they will fall to the waitlist for second round open enrollment.

* Please note that this does not apply to currently enrolled Preschool, Pre-K, and K-8th Grade students, but does apply to siblings of current WCA students.

If you have any questions, please email the School Registrar, Mary Bertke.

The New Cafeteria Has A Name!

On Election Day, WCA students had their own voting experience.  Students were able to vote for the name of the new cafeteria.  The name options were: Cougar Den, Cougar Cafe, Cougar Cafeteria, Roaring Cougar and Cougar Cave.

The votes are in...our new cafeteria will be named Cougar Cafe!

Thank You For Your Service

Ms. Morris's 1st grade class has had a couple of special guests come during the last week to speak for Veteran's Day. Thank you to these men and to all the men and women who have served and are serving and protecting our country!

Andre is a drone pilot for the Air Force.      Mr. Hineman is active duty Air Force.

Boys' Basketball Team & Cheer Team

PTO Updates

Ready, Set, GIVE! Wow! We can't thank this community enough. We reached (and surpassed) our $25,000 goal for RSG thanks to so many families who caught the vision and dug deep to support our teachers. The next step is now to begin fulfilling teacher wishlists. We'll bring you along for the ride if you follow our Facebook Page. It's going to be SO exciting.

Next PTO Meeting. Thursday, November 29 at 6:30pm in the cafeteria. We will be giving the full debrief on the RSG campaign and wish fulfillment along with continuing the process of planning our spring carnival. Do you want to help? Are cotton candy, games, and bake sales right up your alley? We could use your help. Please come!

Lost and Found!!!! Friends, the Lost and Found is getting way too full. Our lovely volunteers are continuing the effort to reunite any items that have names with the correct student or family, but there are many items not marked. We have run out of hangers due to so many coats and sweaters. Also lots of water bottles! Please have your child check for lost items or come in yourself and review the rack in the cafeteria. Our first big purge will happen over Thanksgiving Break. Any items without a name will be donated to Goodwill. Thanks in advance for helping us keep the storage to a manageable size.

Spirit Night @ Chick-fil-A. Join us ALL DAY at Chick-fil-A on Tuesday, November 13. Go grab breakfast, lunch or dinner and mention WCA when your order.  This will also be a Spirit Wear Day. For Spirit Wear Days, students may wear jeans, shorts, or athletic pants with their spirit wear t-shirts or t-shirts/polos in our school colors (blue and green). Please dress modestly.

Reloadable Grocery Cards. Great news! If you are a Safeway shopper, shopping cards are now available. They work just like the King Soopers cards. For each dollar spent, the school gets a rebate. Reach out to Lisa Beerbower for details and to get either card. You can find Lisa over at our PTO Facebook page She will also have both cards available at the Taste of World Compass event.

Box Tops. Please continue to cut them out and stash them! We will have another collection campaign this spring.

New Adult Spirit Shirts . They are here! As you might know, kids' spirit wear shirt sales have been  turned over to the middle school kids, but we know you parents want your swag as well. We listened, we designed, and we're happy to share that the new, awesome shirts are available for purchase (see photo). They are charcoal gray with a left chest logo. They come in both a male and female version for a more flattering fit for all. We will plan to have these available for purchase at Taste of World Compass, as well as at the next PTO meeting.

Choir & Instrumental Notes

School Musical Auditions for Peter Pan were completed last week! Awesome job, everyone!
The cast list will be emailed out to those who auditioned and posted outside of the music room before Thanksgiving Break. If any students or parents are interested in helping on the Stage Crew, Set and Painting Crew, Costume and Makeup Crew, or Lights and Sound Crew, please email
Ms. Armstrong with your name, contact information, and the team you would like to help with so that she can add you to the crew list.

Performance at Starlighting. If you are attending the Starlighting ceremony in Castle Rock on  November 17, be sure to come by Festival Park and support our WCA musicians! The elementary school choirs, the 7th and 8th grade choir, and some of our instrumentalists will be performing from 4:15pm - 4:35pm. We hope to see you there!

"Cone Lady"

One of our wonderful WCA parents, Caroline Chandler, felt that the safety cones in the back pick-up area needed a face lift to go with our new landscaping. She has purchased many new traffic cones and has stenciled our school name on them. They are easy for students and drivers to see. Thank you, Mrs. Chandler!

Nurse Nuggets

November is Diabetes Awareness Month to help raise awareness about both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. What is the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes?  GO HERE

Even more important is knowing the signs of Type 1 Diabetes. Recognizing the signs can save a life. Untreated diabetes can lead to fatal Diabetic Ketoacidosis, which can oftentimes be mistaken for the stomach flu or virus, strep throat, UTI or growth spurt.  WARNING SIGNS: excessive thirst, frequent urination, bedwetting, vision change + headaches, rapid weight loss, increased appetite, irritability + mood changes, fatigue + weakness, stomach pain, nausea + vomiting, fruity breath odor, rapid and heavy breathing.

Call your doctor and ask for a simple finger prick or a urine test.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the colder weather creeping in, so are the illnesses (the common cold, viruses and the flu.) November is Flu Vaccination Month

Preventing the Flu: Good Health Habits Can Help Stop Germs
  • The single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated each year. The seasonal flu vaccine protects against the influenza viruses that research indicates will be most common during the upcoming season.
  • Avoid close contact with sick people.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
  • Clean your hands often with soap and water.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home.
  • Practice other good health habits. Get plenty of sleep, manage stress, drink plenty of fluids and eat nutritious food.
