October 4, 2018
Greetings!

As we strive to create an environment that promotes good health for our school community, we wanted to make you aware of recently learned information — that is, two cases of pertussis have been reported to CJ.

Pertussis (whooping cough), is a respiratory infection caused by bacteria and is primarily spread by direct contact of an infected person. Initially, symptoms begin as a mild respiratory infection and resemble those of a common cold. Within a few weeks, the cough can become more severe and be characterized by coughing episodes of coughing possibly followed by a high-pitched whooping noise. A person with pertussis can spread the bacteria that causes pertussis for up to three weeks after the onset of coughing episodes. Members in a household exposed to pertussis, and who may be harboring the bacteria, can bring the bacteria home and infect others in the household.

The transmission of pertussis can be prevented by receiving the Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis vaccine. Pertussis is treated with antibiotics. Children diagnosed with pertussis must be isolated from school and extra-curricular activities for the first five days of the antibiotic treatment.

If you or your doctors have further questions, please contact Public Health-Dayton and Montgomery County at 225-4508 or 496-7699.

This report serves as a good reminder for everyone to practice good preventative measures, including frequent hand washing, and covering nose and mouth when coughing. Additionally, if your child is not feeling well or has a fever, please let them stay home from school.
