November 2018

Welcome to November - the elections ads are finally over and the holiday ads begin! With only two weeks until the madness that is Black Friday, many are enjoying the calm before the storm of the holiday season. In our case however, we are taking a moment to breathe in the calm after the storm of two wild months!

Right on the heels of our annual conference in Columbus, IN, we gathered for a very special Fall Celebration in Lexington. With formal ceremonies honoring both our design and service award winners, and recognition of Kentucky's newly-licensed professionals, it was a memorable occasion for all.

You can read more about this year's winners below, and also see info on the upcoming holiday parties for your state and local chapters. We hope you will join us at each of these events to celebrate the end of another great year for AIA Kentucky, and read on for what's still to come in 2018!

EH-DE-YU: ADU Design Competition
CoD News

ADU Design Competition
Submission Deadline: December 2, 2018

Like many cities in the United States faced with suburban sprawl and accessibility issues, Lexington is considering amending its zoning to allow for accessory dwelling units, or ADUs. Commonly known as "granny flats," ADUs offer improved accessibility for people with disabilities while adding vibrancy and diversity to the existing urban fabric.

To explore this issue, UK College of Design is holding a design competition in collaboration with LFUCG's Aging and Disability Services. The competition includes both student and professional categories, and winning entries will be published in a text amendment proposal that the city is considering.  Visit the program site to learn how you can take part in shaping the vision for ADUs in Lexington!

The Last Word

I want to take this opportunity to let you know that I will be stepping down as your Executive Vice President at the end of this year.  I came to work for AIA Kentucky, then the Kentucky Society of Architects, in October 1988.  I think we had roughly 275 members at that time, a near-empty bank account and zero dollars in reserves.  What was I thinking?  Well, I was thinking this was a great opportunity to take the helm of an organization that needed attention and care. Am I ever glad I said YES when AIA called!

The truth is, this has been more than a "job" to me.  Serving AIA members and representing the profession of architecture both in Kentucky and nationally has been my privilege for the past 30 years.  I am so grateful that AIA Kentucky's leaders have continued to place their trust in me as we've worked together to build a financially healthy organization offering programs, services and support to nearly 700 architect, associate, emeritus and allied members.  It's all of you, the Members, who have inspired me to advocate on your behalf while providing you and your firms with knowledge and resources that support your success. I am so proud of who you are and the amazing work that you do.

I will forever appreciate the support - and friendship - of a tremendous group of AIA Kentucky leaders who have allowed me to have a career more rewarding and fulfilling than I could have ever imagined.  I am truly blessed.

For the past nearly four years, I've been fortunate to have Kelly Ives, AIA working with me as Member Outreach Coordinator for AIA Kentucky.  She has taken on increasing responsibilities in many areas, as I have been preparing for this transition.  The AIA Kentucky Board of Directors has supported these efforts, and I am happy to say that Kelly is well-prepared to step into the role of Executive Director in 2019.  I'm excited for her and for you as this new chapter begins.  I trust that each of you will welcome Kelly and offer her the same support you've given to me.

I hope to see many of you in the coming weeks as my departure approaches. I will continue to wish ALL of you good health, happiness and success.

Janet D. Pike, Hon. AIA
Executive Vice President
