We welcome November as it is a very exciting month at Christ the King Community Daycare. The children will be learning so much about families and traditions, in preparation for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. In the beginning of November, the children will follow-up learning about the Harvest and where our food, fruits and vegetables come from. Then we will talk about what kinds of food and family traditions we all share this month and what we are really thankful for. The children will have their very own special feast to celebrate "The First Thanksgiving."

We would like to say a very special THANK YOU to our MVP Charter School buddies who helped to make our Harvest Festival such a huge success. At the Harvest Fest, we started our day with an old fashioned sing-a-long led by "Mr. Old McDonald" and his friend "Moo Cow!"  During the song, the children held up pictures of each animal as the name was called. Afterward, classes went to visit the Pumpkin Patch, bouncy houses, arts and crafts, games, and best of all, the Petting Zoo. The children loved having the opportunity to see live farm animals up close. There were ducks and geese, a big black and white turkey, a baby calf, goats, bunnies, guinea pigs, chickens and even an alpaca! They were able to hold some of the animals and feed them as well.

Our 3's and 4's continued the "Down On the Farm" fun and learning with a follow-up lesson that Friday, presented by their MVP Charter School buddies. They enjoyed coloring, arts and crafts, reading stories and a puppet show.

As November comes to an end, many of us will be celebrating the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday and our family traditions. In so many places around the world, people are celebrating the harvest, the coming of winter and the happiness of having family and friends gathered together.  At Christ the King Daycare/ Preschool, we are thankful for all of our loving family, friends, and the Christ the King community.  We extend our warmest wishes to all, for a very Healthy and

Happy Thanksgiving!

  • When calling the facility, please keep in mind that calls should be ideally be made between 12-2pm while the children are napping.
  • We appreciate all of our parents continuing to bring in diapers and a box of wipes twice each month on the 1st and the 15th.
  • We ask that you do not allow your child(ren) to run ahead of you when entering and leaving the facility, it is a safety issue. Especially when exiting the building, children should never open the security door.
  • Should you need to do a drop off on a day you are not scheduled to come in, you must fill out a Drop Off form, and depending upon the availability, you will be charged your hourly rate.  Please keep in mind that we do not switch days.
  • If you come to school with either a stroller or car seat, please keep in mind that all strollers need to be folded and if possible, hung from the special hooks provided.  All car seats are to be put on the shelf, and not on the floor.  Scooters are not be kept in school, and should be taken home.
We thank you for your cooperation with these matters.
Little Einsteins

Science with the Bears
This month's theme, "The Five Senses" was explored throughout all of the centers in the classroom.  The students were able to engage in many multisensory activities.  In the science Center, the students explored with their five senses and helped make a "feely box."  The children helped wrap it with green paper and tape it.  Then as a class we discussed what we could use from the classroom to put inside the box.  We discussed how we are going to use their senses of touch and feel to make predictions of what was inside the box.

During the lesson the children had to close their eyes, put their hands inside the box and make a prediction about what they were touching.  The children then opened their eyes to see if they were correct or not.  The children had a great time in the science center guessing what was inside the box.  We then had to write the word to describe what they took out and either draw a happy face  or a sad face .   It was very exciting to observe them exploring throughout the classroom and choosing different items to put in the box, so their friends could make predictions.

Science with the Angels
The month of October was filled with lots of activities and learning for the Angel class.  One of the science activities that the Angels created was a rainbow out of melted Skittles!  This was a fun way to reinforce colors and to see how mixing colors can even create new colors.  The Angels helped their teachers by arranging the Skittles in different orders on a plate.  After the patterns were created, we then carefully poured warm water onto the plate and watched the magic happen!  The different colors from the Skittles formed a rainbow, and the kids loved watching all of the different colors blend together.  The Angels were amazed with their beautiful rainbow!

Science with the Bumblebees
Incorporating the themes of Fall and Halloween, the Bumblebees did a science project where they examined different objects with magnifying glasses and used their five senses.  We dissected a pumpkin and the children were able to feel the pumpkin seeds in their hands along with the mushy guts!  They found this part a lot of fun!  They examined leaves as well and felt how rough they were compared to the soft seeds in the pumpkin.  Since then the children love to collect leaves when we go outside to the playground!  Discovery and learning never ends.

Mathematicians

Math with Snugglies II
Our babies in Snugglies II have had a wonderful month learning and exploring the world around them.  Last month the children had lots of fun with the numbers 3 and 4.  We sang "Three Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed" and we count to 3 with our fingers.  In our Animal Book, we counted the 4 legs on our furry friends and for snack we counted out 4 puffs or cheerios. We look forward to learning more about numbers in the coming months.

Math with the Sunflowers
Math is presented to your child every day, from counting animals, sorting objects and learning about the shapes and numbers of the month.  We introduce and review the numbers, shapes, and colors at circle time.  In October we were learning the numbers 3 and 4, and the shape of the month was Octagon.   The Sunflowers also learn math skills by playing the Shape and Color Bingo game.    Playing Shape and Color Bingo is a way to review these concepts in a fun way.  The children are learning without even knowing.  The Sunflowers are given bingo cards with pictures of different shapes and colors on them, such as a red triangle. Miss Linda or Miss Ashley would call out a shape and color and the children would have to look at their cards and put a small circle on the image if they have it on their card.  This game also allows the children to learn how to verbally communicate what they see and participate with their peers in a learning activity.

Math with the Ducks
In the month of October the unit theme was "The Five Senses." For math, we identified the numbers one through five.  Using the numbers one through five we used our sense of touch to find objects that felt different and paste them next to the corresponding number.  For example, students used one pompom and identified the feeling as soft. Then they pasted one pompom next to the number one. Then students felt a fabric square and identified it as feeling smooth. Then students took two fabric squares and pasted them next to the number two. Students continued this until they finished pasting five objects next to the number five.  For our sense of sight, students completed AB patterns using leaves.  Students first used the manipulative counting bears to make and complete AB patterns.  Then students were given different color leaves and asked to paste the leaves in an AB pattern.

Little Picassos

Art with the Kitties
Painting is always a fun time in the Kitties room.  With us being full swing into the fall season, there are a lot of great colors to see and recognize.  Having Halloween just around the corner, we did a few projects to learn to recognize orange and black.  One day, the Kitties painted paper plates orange and then they glued on black eyes and a black mouth to turn them in to Jack O' Lanterns!  Another day, we used black paper in the shape of a hexagon and used orange for feet and a nose to make a penguin!  As the Kitties painted and glued, we had them say the name of the color they were working with.  Learning is always exciting when it's fun mixed with a little mess!

Art with the Monkeys
This month, the Monkeys will continue to explore the wonderful fall season.  During October, the children loved to pick leaves from the playground.  One day, Miss Sara and I had the students gather the leaves in bags from the play area and we brought them back to the classroom.  The next morning, we went into the art room to work on a project.  We gave each child a piece of paper with their names on it.  Then we gave each child two leaves and had them pant each leaf orange and brown.  With the help of Miss Sara and I, the Monkeys were able to stamp the painted leaves onto the paper.  The stamp print showed the children the design of the leaf.  The children were all excited by the way their painting came out.

  Art with the Pandas
The Pre-K theme this month was "Five Senses."  The Pandas explored their senses throughout all of the centers in the classroom and were able to engage in many multisensory activities.   During meeting, the children read a book called, "My Hands Can Touch," by Jodie Wheeler-Toppen.   The children then discussed their sense of touch and the different textures of different objects.

In the  art center , the Pandas examined different textures  such as hard, soft, smooth, rough and bumpy.  The children then explored around the room to find different objects to create a collage.  They glued  each item onto paper after describing how it felt.  The children also wrote the word after gluing each material to the paper.   The children really enjoyed this project and exploring around the classroom to find different objects for their  collage!

Musicians in the Making

Music with the Puppies
The Puppies love singing and moving to music.  They especially are enjoying their time with Mr.Kenny, the music teacher.  When he arrives, the children and teachers all gather around on the rug.  It is wonderful to see them dance around and clap when every song ends.  They especially love when Mr. Kenny hands them each a tambourine to shake around. At the end of the songs some of the kids are reluctant to give the instruments back.  They are just too cute.

Music with the Chipmunks
The Chipmunks just love to sing and dance whether in the Music and Movement Room, with Mr. Kenny, the classroom, or anywhere they hear music. Throughout October, the class has been doing the "Spooky Walk."  They act out and move around to what the song says to do during this "spooky" time of year. We turn out the lights to make it dark and scary.  Each time they hear a spooky sound like "rattling bones and ghostly moans," the class gets excited and starts screaming and laughing.

This song improves upon their listening skills and memory recognition as they repeat the lines to the song when prompted to. Now they will sing the song anytime during the course of the day even without the music.  They also like singing and dancing to the "Popcorn" song where they sing and act out the words to the song and pretend to make and eat popcorn.  Even on the playground they sing and dance as they bang away on the "bongo" drums.  Listening, singing, and dancing to music gives the class the freedom to move and jump around, act silly, and just have lots of fun.

Music with the Turtles
This month the Turtles were very lucky to have met a new teacher who goes by the name of Mr. Kenny!  Since we sing and learn new songs all day long, it was great fun to meet Mr. Kenny and hear all the new songs he had in store for us.  Mr. Kenny brings a lot of new songs and dance moves into our classroom.  Along with the songs that Mr. Kenny is teaching us, we are continuing to sing songs that we already know such as "Itsy Bitsy Spider," "ABC's," and "The Wheels on the Bus."  We are also hearing a few new songs that we have never heard before, such as "Five Little Pumpkins" and "Let's Share Our Candy."   Of course, we are always singing out "Good Morning" songs, our "Center Time" songs, as well as our "Goodbye" songs!  Music is a great way to get the kids interested in activities.  It's also a lot of fun to hear the rhymes, which is a great way to help the children remember key ideas.

Gym and Tech Time with the Bunnies
The Bunnies always have a great time when going to the gym.  As the month of October has gone by, the Bunnies have gone from pushing the cars across the room, to actually stepping into the cars and driving it themselves.  They love trying to ride the little bicycles as well.  They can't reach the pedals just yet, but the Bunnies will sits on the bikes and walk them across the room.

Little by little, we have been implementing the Music and Movement room into our daily routine as well.  The Music and Movement Room uses a Beam projector to display games onto the floor for the children to interact with, by stepping on certain items.  For example, some games have the children try to pop colored balloons or bubbles by stepping on them.  We model the activities by saying, "red balloon" and tapping on the balloon.  It is still very new for the Bunnies so they'll sometimes stare at the projection, but every once in a while a child will say "bubble," bend down to try to touch it and it pops.  They are surprised it works every time.

Gym Time with the Lions
With so many fun and spooky things to do in October the Lions decided, why not make up a new game that was fun, silly and spooky all at the same time.  We called our new game, "Monster Golf" and the children had so much fun playing.  We looked around the room and gathered some Halloween materials that would be useful.  We had 3 monster cups that we used as the golf holes, 6 "eye balls" that became our golf balls, and pool noodles that we used as the barriers so the balls wouldn't go everywhere.   We made a golf club out of pipe staging and each child had to wear the witch's hat when it was their turn.  The children had so much fun as one by one they took turns trying to shoot the balls into the monster's head.  They all cheered each other on and didn't want the game to end.  Sometimes the simplest things can make the biggest fun.

Gym and Computer Time with the Dolphins
During the Month of October the Dolphins enjoyed the annual Harvest Festival! In addition to learning about the harvest and enjoying the fall season the Dolphins explored the theme of "The Five Senses."  In Gym the Dolphins played apple toss in which Dolphins tossed red bean bag apples into buckets and also through hula hoops.  We also had a lot of fun dancing to fall songs, such as "Old McDonald Had a Farm" and "Five Little Pumpkins."  In Gym, the Dolphins also played catch that pumpkin in which they had to catch the student carrying the "pumpkin."   In order to incorporate the theme of the five senses into our gym time we did a sensory relay race. Students had to run and pass along objects of different textures, including soft stuffed animals, blocks, bumpy seashells, and squishy beanbags.  The Dolphins also implored the sense of hearing during animal races in which the students made animal sounds and movements during races.  Students also enjoyed using their sense of sight to play "I Spy" in the gym.

During technology time, the Dolphins enjoyed watching Halloween Audio books and Halloween Sing Alongs.  The Dolphins also got to sort Harvest fruits and vegetables, as well as farm Animals on the smart board.  In addition, we enjoyed playing computer games, such as Old MacDonald's farm and ABC Mouse!
The Nurse's Station

During this time of year, we tend to see a higher incidence of various respiratory illnesses such as the flu.  A healthy school environment requires the cooperation and effort of us all working together.

Below are a few important reminders:

  • Please refer to our Health Policy.  It will provide detailed information as to when to child keep your child home and when to bring your child in.
  • If your child was diagnosed with a contagious illness, please remember to inform the center.
  • As part of a weekly routine, please remember to take home your child's bedding and return it the following Monday.
  • Please remember to replace your child's cubby with weather appropriate clothing. Make sure all items are labeled with your child's name.
  • Please don't forget to get your flu vaccine and proof of documentation. It is mandatory by the Board of Health for all children 6 months to 59 months of age, attending Day Care or Pre-K to receive the influenza vaccine.

Have a Healthy and Happy Thanksgiving!
