64 SECONDS to Learn Up To  25 THINGS about St. Louis Park High School
November 8, 2018

1:   From the Principal

Working collaboratively was a large component of the work I have done this week.  I started the week meeting with city planners about future projects near our high school.  It was very helpful to discuss the needs of our students and school staff in the context of planning together.  This collaboration was another example of the great partnership with our city.  I value our collective work for the young people in St. Louis Park.

I also collaborated with Patrick Duffy, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, to conduct some learning walks.  These learning walks help us assess the needs of our teachers and students by viewing portions of lessons.  By joining students and teachers while students are learning, we are able to be learners ourselves.  I appreciate the support and collaboration and look forward to our continued work together.

Last but not least I had the great honor of working with a couple of students on their current assignments.  In one class I joined a small group discussion and in the other class I was interviewed about how we know what we know about words and language.  This collaboration was another great chance to be a learner with our students.  Collaboration is a necessary skill to become a lifelong learner.  I value the experiences I have had this week and look forward to many more.

Principal

6:  Echo Convention News

Last weekend, three Echo students and I attended the national journalism convention in Chicago. At the convention, the Echo students learned they had received a National Newspaper Pacemaker for the last school year's print editions. The National Pacemaker is the highest award the organization gives to student news media and the contest dates back to 1927. NSPA awarded 28 National Newspaper Pacemakers to newspapers and newsmagazines at the Chicago convention. This is the fifth National Newspaper Pacemaker Award Echo has received, and it has been a finalist eight times dating back to the first in 2007. Echo's last won the National Newspaper Pacemaker in 2015.

In addition, the students placed in several on-site contests. The Echo won Best of Show for in both the "small school online" and "newspaper with fewer than 12 pages" categories. Although the awards don't come with any cash prize, the students get two new shiny trophies. It's good to note these awards are for people at the convention only, but the award is still impressive since more than 6,000 students attended the conference.

Two students also picked up individual awards. Alumna Devin Raynor (2018) won an Honorable Mention in the National Scholastic Press Association's Design of the Year Award, which can be seen here . Also, Sam St. Clair won an Honorable Mention in the on-site Write Off contest for her News Design.

19:  "Funky Sock" Fundraiser
Hello! As a school, we believe that IB will be the best preparation for life outside of school as it prepares critical thinkers who strive for intercultural understanding. Our district is incredibly generous in covering the majority of the costs for IB exams, but some families that do not qualify for free/reduced lunch find their portion of the registration fee to be a burden on their family. We would like to have a fund for assisting families with extenuating circumstances with their IB exam registration fees. Please help us build this fund by buying some socks! These socks are so cute they will make great holiday presents!

Thank you so much for your support!
