Simmons and Cook, Mr. and Miss PACS 2018
|
|
Prince seniors Mack Simmons and Delaney Cook were selected by their high school peers as Mr. and Miss PACS 2018.
Mack is the son of Marcus and Carol Simmons and has attended PACS for 14 years. His favorite academic subject is Math. Mack attends Athens Church. His favorite Bible verse is Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Delaney is the daughter of Kendall and Susan Cook and has attended PACS for nine years. Her favorite academic subject is Science, and she has been involved in mentoring students at Prince Avenue Christian School through the Barnabas Program for three years. Delaney attends Prince Avenue Baptist Church. Her favorite Bible verse is Deuteronomy 31:6 “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them. For the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.” After graduation, Delaney plans to attend either the University of Georgia or the College of Charleston to major in exercise science and genetics then go on to medical school to become a pediatric medical geneticist.
Mr. and Miss PACS are selected from a group of five senior boys and five senior girls representing the senior class on the Homecoming Court. When selecting Homecoming Court, the student body is asked to consider if students are characterized by the “fruit” of the Spirit as listed in Galatians 5:22-23.

Lower School Students Participate
in Exciting Weather Lab

Recently, first and second-grade students at Prince Avenue Christian School had the opportunity to explore the many types of weather and how they occur. Students discovered how the earth moves and creates seasons and how the sun affects weather. Students also experimented with temperature, lightning storms, tornadoes, and even snow. In addition, students learned how to use rain gauges, barometers, anemometers, and thermometers. They were able to simulate a desktop rainstorm, make tornadoes in a bottle, and touch a cloud in a box.
This exciting and informative lab was funded by the Walton EMC School Empowerment Grant received by Prince last school year. This grant is the STEM Lab Establishment/Science Curriculum Grant and has benefitted the lower school with science equipment and supplies such as microscopes, balance scales, and other lab tools as well as supplies needed for projects to enrich studies in earth, physical, and life science.

Oconee Rotary Club Gives Dictionaries
to Prince 3rd Graders

The Oconee County Rotarians recently visited Prince third graders and explained who they are and what they do both on a national and local level. The representatives also delivered free dictionaries to the students. In addition to sharpening dictionary skills, these books provide additional information on the United States Presidents, states, maps, history, planets, and various math activities.

Chemistry Students Complete Flame Test Lab
|
|
Students in Mrs. Harvey's 10th grade College Prep and Honors Chemistry classes recently completed the Flame Test Lab in which they tested the atomic emission spectrum (or color) given off in different elements. Each element has its own unique color.

Harkness Discussions

As I stepped into the room, I could hear animated discussion sprinkled with laughter. “Do you really think so? My impression was completely different.” And from a different student, “If you look on down in the text, you can see where that is the point he was trying to make.” Then another response, “It’s not exactly like the guy was a saint. I mean, look at what he did.” . . . laughter all around.
There was not a teacher at a podium at the front of the room. The desks were not in rows. There was no power point or notes on the board. This class was different. This class was completely student-led. And these students, sitting in a circle with text open and computers on, were motivated, engaged, and invested in a conversation not about the weekend or about pop culture, but about literature.
This was the classroom of Miss Elizabeth Sadler, Prince high school English teacher, and these ten students were in her Dual Enrollment English 102 class. As they talked, Miss Sadler was at her desk, “mapping” the discussion on a piece of paper. There were lines to show when the students responded to each other as well as notes for when they made contextual references or asked questions. Her map was a fascinating visual of the conversation taking place in the room.
The discussion I witnessed is formally called a Harkness Discussion, and the students had been taught the process by Miss Sadler. This unique classroom model is used in many of Miss Sadler’s classes as well as the classes of Mrs. Karen Barrett who teaches History and Economics at Prince.

History Class Creates Renaissance Games, Donates to Charity

Mrs. Barrett’s Modern World History classes recently created Renaissance Monopoly Boards. Coach Martin’s sixth-grade History classes played the games to help critique and improve them. The games were then donated to students at The Bridge of Georgia in Monroe, Georgia. The Bridge of Georgia works to develop the ability of students of diverse needs.

Prince Fine Arts Places Third
in Region One Act Competition

The cast and crew of the Prince Fine Arts Department production of
Oklahoma!
had an excellent showing in the Region One Act Competition winning third place. This is the second time in school history the department has placed in the top three at this competition.
Juniors Jack Johnston and Emilie David won All-Star Cast while junior Thompson Sewell was awarded Best Supporting Actor for the region. In addition, Prince Avenue received the tech award for the region. Congratulations to these students for their hard work, dedication, and excellence in the Arts.

Varsity Girls Cross Country Team Makes
School History, Qualifies for State Meet

The Prince Avenue Christian School Varsity Girls Cross Country team made school history when they qualified in regional competition to compete in the State Cross Country that was held Friday, November 2nd in Carrollton, Georgia.
In region competition, five Prince runners placed in the top 40 with four of those in the top 25. Sophomores Olivia Shiver and Elizabeth Coleman placed 9th and 19th respectively. Freshman Magill Bahnsen placed 22nd, junior Maddy Wilson placed 23rd, sophomore Bailey Hicks placed 37th, and freshman Kyla Bowen placed 56th. The team came in fourth place overall. At state competition in Carrollton, the team placed 12th out of 16.
Prince Athletic Director Richard Ricketts confirms that this is only the second time in school history the Varsity Girls Cross Country Team has qualified for state competition. Congratulations to these Prince athletes for their hard work and dedication resulting in a successful season.

Prince Softball Finishes Second
in State Tournament

The Prince Avenue Christian School Softball Lady Wolverines advanced to the Private A Elite 8 State Tournament last week in Columbus. Although the team was expecting to compete well, they defied many odds, making it all the way to the championship game.
In their first game of the tournament, the Lady Wolverines defeated Tattnall Square 2-1. Taylor Bond pitched the entire game and got the win. They were led offensively by Janie Henderson, Haley Cartey, and Tori Cameron.
In their 2nd game, the Wolverines defeated First Presbyterian Day 5-4. Again, Bond pitched the complete game and picked up her 2nd win of the tournament. Offensive leaders were Sam Smith, Janie Henderson, Taylor Bond, and Tori Cameron.
After a loss to #1 ranked Wesleyan, PACS eliminated FPD by a score of 4-1. Bond got the complete game victory, and Madi Gillespie and Kam Caldwell had key offensive games. PACS lost to defending state champion Wesleyan in the finals to reach elimination. The Lady Wolverines finished 2nd in the state for the 2018 season.
Prince Athletic Director Richard Ricketts expressed admiration for what the team accomplished this year. "The entire Prince community is so proud of our softball players and coaches. Their outstanding play at the State Tournament in Columbus was really great to see. Their run to the championship game illustrates perfectly what can happen when a team cares about each other and plays together. Awesome job!"

The PACS Interact Club Sponsors
“The BIG Thank You” Campaign

The Prince Avenue Christian School Interact Club has launched this year's "The Big Thank You” Campaign in which students in all grade levels have the opportunity to write letters to US soldiers stationed overseas during the holidays.
PACS students were encouraged to participate in this effort by writing heartfelt handwritten letters to troops who will be away from friends and family during Thanksgiving and Christmas. Interact Club members assisted in this effort by visiting lower school classrooms and helping students as they wrote and decorated their letters. In years past, some of the soldiers have written back and expressed appreciation for the support and encouragement. The Interact Club’s goal for this year was 500 letters.

Local Hay Bale Contest

The PACS Interact Club would like to thank the Prince community for their support in the local hay bale contest sponsored by Striplings General Store. The club won first place in the contest and will donate the $500 prize money to Extra Special People in Watkinsville.

Helen Zeagler Receives
Above and Beyond Award
|
|
Prince Avenue third grade teacher Mrs. Helen Zeagler recently received the Above and Beyond Award for the first quarter of school. The Above and Beyond Award recognizes teachers and staff members through a nomination and evaluation process conducted by members of the school’s Administrative Leadership Team. This individual is selected based on attitude and commitment, work performance, interpersonal skills, and personal traits.
Mrs. Zeagler has been teaching at Prince for four years and has been in education for 13 years. When asked about teaching at Prince, Mrs. Zeagler explains, “Five years ago I patiently waited and prayed for a position at Prince. At that time, I subbed all over the school during that year and counted it a privilege to see the school from all perspectives - lower school through high school. I am grateful to have the honor of working with such a professional staff and faculty and to be guided by an outstanding administration.”
