Unmanned Canada 2018 Report
Last week WCDIA President Denean Tomlin attended UnmannedCanada 2018 in Vancouver, BC. Over 250 attendees came together for 3 days of panels and speaker sessions to discuss the future of UAS (now referred to as RPAS) within a variety of industries. WCDIA members and delegates from across western Canada were in strong attendance. BVLOS and UTM were hot topics, as were applications in C-UAS and security. Denean was also invited to represent WCDIA at the 3rd annual Women in Drones luncheon on day 2 of the conference organized by the USC Board. This luncheon celebrates women in STEM and leadership in UAS companies.
The industry is ripe with bold opportunities, progressive entrepreneurs and bright minds all set on a course to make major changes in how things are done in air, land and sea. WCDIA looks forward to staying connected with our new contacts, working with UAS companies in aerospace, defence and security and helping those entering the market. We also look forward to future collaborations with Unmanned Systems Canada.
WCDIA would like to congratulate the 2018 UC2018 Conference Committee and the Board of Unmanned Systems Canada for another great conference. We look forward to seeing everyone at UnmannedCanada 2019 in Ottawa, November 7-11, 2019.

2 Day Workshop
"Getting in the Game" - ITB's for SME's
Doing business in the defence industry

The Western Canadian Defence Industry Association (WCDIA) is holding a 2 day workshop regarding Canada's Industrial and Technological Benefits (ITB) framework. Geared to Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs), Post-Secondary Institutions and Research Agencies, the sessions will be delivered so that organizations can build knowledge and skills to better position themselves to participate in engagement activities with prime defence contractors, some of which are managing off-set obligations in the range of several billion dollars.
Session #1
will provide a basic understanding of the federal policy that ensures Canadian small business and public institutions benefit from military procurement.
Session #2
will assist SMEs and public institutions develop their Value Proposition so as to harness ITB opportunities and government defence contracts.
Session #3
will provide SMEs and public institutions registered in the series with direct "hands-on" experience with a select group of prime defence contractors applying the lessons learned for "getting in the game".
The complete workshop consists of all 3 Sessions and takes place over the 2 day time period.
The series is designed and delivered by WCDIA.

Women Entrepreneurship Strategy
Western Economic Diversification Canada is pleased to share that the Government of Canada launched the
Women Entrepreneurship Fund
, a new program under the Budget 2018
Women Entrepreneurship Strategy
(WES). This Fund along with the
WES Ecosystem Fund
is part of a comprehensive, whole-of-government plan to help women grow their businesses through access to financing, networks and advice.
Western Economic Diversification Canada, along with the other regional development agencies across the country, will be working with Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada to deliver these two funds.
The WES Ecosystem Fund
This $85 million, five-year program will strengthen capacity of organizations supporting women entrepreneurs by ensuring they have the business supports they need to start or grow a business.
Projects must be led by not-for-profit organizations and must respond to the needs of diverse and under-represented women. There is a national/multi-regional stream and a regional stream under the fund.
The Women Entrepreneurship Fund
Investments under this program will help women-owned and women-led businesses to grow their existing businesses, so they can pursue opportunities in domestic and global markets. It will provide non-repayable funding up to $100,000 for projects that focus on the:
- pursuit of market opportunities abroad;
- scale-up, expansion and growth; and,
- additional activities that support the objectives of the Women Entrepreneurship Fund
