November Third Thursday: Writing about Faith

At a Texas Book Festival panel a few weeks ago, memoir writer Casey Gerald, the grandson of a famous preacher, said that preachers have the hardest job: telling a thousands-of-years-old story that everybody already knows in such a way that it seems like they've never heard it before. In this panel, four writers will talk about how they write about faith, including finding fresh angles on old stories and adapting them to the changing expectations and needs of different audiences.
- Rev. Meg Barnhouse, senior minister of the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin and the author of several books, including Did I Say That Out Loud? Musings from a Questioning Soul and Broken Buddha
- Owen Egerton, filmmaker (most recently of Blood Fest) and author (most recently of the novel Hollow)
- Imam Attiah Emarah, Imam of the Islamic Center of Greater Austin (ICGA) and the teacher of Islamic Studies and Arabic at Austin Peace Academy (APA).
- Greg Garrett, author of over twenty books of fiction, nonfiction, and memoir, including the acclaimed novels Free Bird, Cycling, Shame, and The Prodigal.

One of Austin's most beloved reading series - One Page Salon - is teaming up with the Writers' League of Texas for a special evening of quick readings, slow drinking, and lots of literary shenanigans.
One Page Salon (called "the best literary evening in town" by the
Austin American-Statesman) is the brainchild of novelist, screenwriter, and comedian Owen Egerton. During the course of the evening, five writers will read a single page from a work in progress (goodbye, literary readings that go on and on and on) and answer three questions from the hosts (hello, witty banter with the incomparable Owen Egerton). Midway through, there's a break for eating (Pueblo Viejo, located inside The North Door, has great tacos!), drinking (coffee, beer, Topo), and talking (this. is. the. best. part.).
One person from the audience will have the opportunity to read one page of their work. If you're interested, bring the page and put your name on the list once you arrive.
Plus, by popular demand, we'll bring back the One Sentence Salon.

On the Hero's Journey: Discovering Plot, Character, and Meaning for Your Novel

Joseph Campbell's analysis of the archetypal hero's journey inspired George Lucas to write Star Wars and offers writers a useful skeleton or framework for their plots by suggesting ways that characters may be transformed during their adventures and positing some of the ultimate meanings characters discover along the way.
In this class, participants will learn how this pattern might help you write your best novel, how the pattern can be reshaped to suit your purposes, and what kinds of stories don't fit the pattern.

Getting Your Novel Synopsis Ready for Competitions, Agents, and Editors

This class will explore the standard features of the synopsis, the most common mistakes synopsis writers make, and how a weak synopsis might reflect deeper structural concerns in your manuscript.
Any synopses submitted ahead of time will receive an additional edit by the instructor.
Registration closes Thursday, November 8, at midnight. Walk-ins will be accepted as space allows.

Here are some of the free, public Texas Writes events coming up. Each event features two accomplished authors talking about a particular aspect of craft, followed by a discussion about the writing life facilitated by a WLT staffer. There's a chance there will be writing exercises (bring paper and pen) and there will be plenty of time for questions.

Publication News
Jessica Wilbanks (Houston) is excited to celebrate the release of her debut memoir,
When I Spoke in Tongues, from Beacon Press on November 13th. In her book, Jessica describes how profoundly her life was altered when she left her childhood faith of Pentecostalism. In a starred review,

Events
Lori Duran (Austin) will present her new book Austin's Travis Heights Neighborhood November 18th 4:00 pm at Book Woman, 5501 N Lamar Bld Ste A105 Austin. Duran has collected 185 photographs from the Austin History Center and other sources for this book. Also, by interviewing Austin residents Duran has collected historical information on the Travis Heights Neighborhood. More info here.
