Tour the Walcourt Building on April 29th!
The Walcourt was completed in 1929 as a luxury apartment building. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 at which time it was already boarded and barely saved from the highway construction to the west which sealed the fate of so many other historic properties. The building remained boarded for 36 years until 2018 when the process of restoration and rehabilitation began. Over the years the shuttered building endured a few fires, vandalism, and theft of copper flashing leaving it open to the elements. Work included extensive structural repairs, window restoration, interior plaster restoration, retention of historic fireplace tile. New work includes ample parking, energy conservation, ADA, and code related upgrades of the building envelope, access, and systems. Other improvements include an elevator, touchless plumbing fixtures, and a medical grade air filtration system. With construction nearly completed, the building has been designed to be adaptively reused as Class A office space.

Owner: Walcourt Partners, LLC represented by Steve Morris, CPA

Continuing Education & Your License Renewal
You have recently received a card in the mail from the Oklahoma Board of Architects, Landscape Architects and Registered Interior Designers about your license renewal. Their online system is open for renewals.

As part of that renewal process, you will have to manually enter your 24 hours of HSW credit. (We recommend cutting and pasting each course straight from your AIA transcript). As you enter each program you will see the need to upload proof of your attendance. You do not have to have a certificate for each course. Your AIA transcript continues to serve as that proof of attendance. You can enter your 24 HSW hours and then on the last screen, upload your transcript.

Questions or assistance with your Oklahoma license renewal? Contact the Oklahoma Board of Architects, Landscape Architects and Registered Interior Designers at 405-949-2383.

All AIA Central Oklahoma and AIA Oklahoma continuing education has been reported to AIA and should be appearing on your transcript. If you are missing a program we provided, please contact Melissa at aiacoc@cox.net.
AIACOC June Luncheon Program
Join AIA Central Oklahoma for our AIA June Luncheon set to take place on Thursday, June 10th at the Capitol View Event Center located at 5201 N. Lincoln Blvd. This luncheon will take place in person only and masks will be required.  The June Luncheon program will be The National Guard Armory, the Future Home of Coop Ale Works.
When the former National Guard Armory at 200 NE 23 came up for sale Coop Ale works jumped at the chance to revive a part of Oklahoma’s history and create a place the community can be proud of.
When the former National Guard Armory at 200 NE 23 came up for sale Coop Ale works jumped at the chance to revive a part of Oklahoma’s history and create a place the community can be proud of.

The armory was built in 1935, was once home to the 45th Infantry and National Guard. It was vacated by 2010. The cavernous former armory, spanning 72,667 square feet, was seen as a potentially awkward fit for most development possibilities due to its design. The bulk of the interior is just the ground floor with the roof three stories above.  Floors line the east and west sides of the building overlooking the space.

That design, however, was seen as ideal for an expanded COOP Ale Works brewery that will be transformed into a visitor destination with the side offices turned into a boutique hotel. The proposal called for 16 hotel rooms overlooking the production floor with the opposite side of the building to be home to a restaurant and event venue.

Coop Ale Works hired Spur Design as the architect for the project. Join Daniel Mercer of Coop Ale Works and Seth Cavin, AIA of Spur Design to learn more about this fascinating project!
Daniel Mercer is a Yukon native who has spent most of his life in Oklahoma City and its surrounds. He graduated from OCU, began his career in venture capital and made several transitions throughout two decades, including consulting, flying in the US Air Force, corporate finance and, most recently, beer. Mr. Mercer co-founded COOP Ale Works in 2008 with a goal of creating a production brewery Oklahoma City would be proud of. He led the company through its 2014 expansion and is currently spearheading COOP’s $28 million renovation and expansion of the historic 23rd Street National Guard Armory.
Seth Cavin, AIA is the founding principal and owner of Spur Design. He is a licensed architect and currently serves as President for the Central Oklahoma Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIACOC). Seth has been married for 17 years to his fabulous wife, Erin and has three amazing children and an overly-dependent dog. Seth started Spur Design in 2008, taking the best of experiences from his time at other firms in Oklahoma City and Kansas City to create a fun, focused, and efficient work environment which embraces investment and growth of staff into future firm leadership. Under his leadership and direction over the last 13 years, Spur Design has grown to 60+ employees who provide Architecture, Interior Design, Mechanical & Electrical Engineering, and Cost Estimating services through their Oklahoma City, Kansas City, and Phoenix offices.

Austin Tunnell, Building Culture Founder
Austin Tunnell comes from a diverse background, none of which includes design, building, or architecture until his late 20s. His quest for meaning led him out of his CPA cubicle with a large accounting firm in Houston to the villages of Uganda during 2 years as Peace Corps volunteer, and finally to rural Oklahoma as an apprentice to a Master Mason. Since 2017, he has designed, developed and built multiple projects, including a six-home pocket neighborhood and a lake home with a 60-foot tower, all with traditional methods and materials. He continues to innovate with each build, working toward his vision of a more durable, beautiful, and human architecture.

The advent of lumber mills and mass-produce nails in the 19th century led to the complete overhaul of a building system born from thousands of years of innovation and evolution. Some of these new practices are good; some are not. There is a balance between stubbornly clinging to the old and diving headlong into the new.  We have much to learn about architecture from the past, when we were still building things that lasted thousands of years, incited wonder, and celebrated beauty and human potential. In this presentation we will be exploring ways to blend the best of old and new, tradition and innovation. We will be exploring mass-wall masonry in a modern context.

Sustainability and resiliency - How it applies within the Built World
Wednesday, May 19th at 12:00 p.m. (1 HSW)

Provide a background on where we are going as far as trends in the term “green building”. Over the past 15 years the built industry has been moving in a direction to understand and create stronger, longer lasting structures while consider environmental impact. The term that has been most used over this time is “green building” – well the thought process is evolving, and we are now thinking more in terms of science and facts. The terms more widely used now, and which provide a more specific focus , are sustainability and now resiliency … these terms, in my opinion, have more meaning than just saying green building. So let me provide you with a overview of this trend and what it means for our industry, the polymeric cladding industry.
