Or Shalom provides us with an inspiring incubator for ideas, a safe place to grieve when the larger issues in the world break our hearts, and a system of moral justice that our children are proudly sharing with the world around them. It is only with your support that Or Shalom is able to provide the overarching structure for these many activities.

Friday, November 15 at 6:30pm

This Shabbat Kulanu is hosted by Bet Sefer families, who can sign up for hosting tasks  here.

News Minyan
Sunday, November 17 at 10am at Or Shalom

The News Minyan on November 17 is Or Shalom's first discernment activity to help us learn and think about becoming a Sanctuary Community. We will use this podcast as our "Text of Our Time" this month.   We will listen to part of the podcast together, and Rabbi Katie will present Jewish texts to frame our conversation.

News Minyan uses our tradition's practice of wrestling with text to examine our experience of life in the 21 st century. We seek to focus Judaism's wisdom, compassion and life-affirmation on current events, so that we can decide, in community, how to act. Each meeting, we examine and discuss a "text of our times" (a news article, essay, brief video or podcast) in the light of traditional texts and contemporary Jewish thought.

The News Minyan is not a forum for political debate. It is a spiritual practice in which we explore and wrestle with what it is to be alive now. In this noisy, cluttered world, we seek a space where silence and contemplation are possible. To that end, we have evolved a form that includes silence, speech, listening, song, prayer, and poetry. This form helps us to face subjects we might want to ignore, or that might ignite fierce dispute, in a way that values difference and engenders depth and new thinking. Everyone is welcome.

Forum on Racial & Economic Justice
Sunday, November 17, 1:30-4:00 pm
African-American Art and Culture Complex
762 Fulton St., San Francisco

Or Shalom members are invited to a series of forums on racial and economic justice, "Beyond Us and Them: Dismantling Racism." The San Francisco Black/Jewish Unity Group is organizing these free programs, with Or Shalom as a co-sponsor. The forums will use documentary film and other media to spark discussions in an effort to inform and build bridges and community for the purpose of dismantling white supremacy and racism.

The first forum will begin with excerpts from the film "When They See Us."  Free parking is available in the lot adjacent to the building. Light refreshments will be served.   The second forum will be in January, and the third will be in March at Or Shalom.

The SF Black/Jewish Unity Group is working to join together synagogues and African American churches for social justice work.

Register at EventBrite.

Vote Forward Letter-Writing Campaign
Sunday, December 8, 4-6 pm

Join us at Or Shalom the afternoon of Sunday, December 8. We'll be writing letters to potential voters in other states, encouraging them to register to vote.

Our project is part of Vote Forward's campaign to identify not-yet-registered voters in under-represented communities around the country and take action to help them register and vote. In this way we can ensure that the electorate reflects the true preferences of the people of each state.

All supplies will be provided. Just bring your energy and enthusiasm.

Sing Shalom is a Jewish music and movement program for kids under 5 along with their families. Introduce your little ones to song, dance, and Jewish tradition.

LEV Shalom is a joint learning program for children in grades K-2 and their families. Zehava will lead children's activities while Rabbi Katie spends learning time with the adults. The whole group will get together for activities like t 'filah (prayer), art, cooking, and singing.

Shalom Chaverim!
Welcoming New Members to Or Shalom

Announcing the Chaverim program, which matches up new members (or even people seriously exploring membership) with current Or Shalom members. It's a kind of a buddy system, designed to give new members a personal connection at Or Shalom.

We are looking for community members who want to take someone new--it might be a whole family--under their wing for a while. As a Chaver (friend), you will reach out to the new member you've been assigned and offer a personal welcome. You'll answer questions, encourage participation, remind them of upcoming events. There might be a Shabbat dinner at your home, or a date to sit together at services one Saturday morning. You can do as much or as little as seems comfortable for you and your match.

We will try to make matches that take background, interests, kids' ages, etc., into account. We're hoping that lasting friendships will develop.

If you'd like to learn more about being one of our Chaverim, please email buddy@orshalom.org. And if you know someone who is considering joining Or Shalom but wants to know more about us, drop a note to that same address.
Bet Midrash
Or Shalom's New Adult Learning Opportunity
Wednesdays, 4:30-5:30 (only when Bet Sefer is in session)

Join with other Or Shalom seekers as we study a variety of contemporary and traditional Jewish topics in a lively, participatory group of thoughtful kindred spirits. For just an hour a week, take time to exercise your mind, connect with your community, and nurture your soul.

Most sessions will be led by Rabbi Katie; some may be led by other Or Shalom members. If you have topics you would like to learn about or teach, please let Rabbi Katie know.

All are welcome; no advance registration necessary. Drop in as you can.  Upcoming dates: 11/13, 11/20, 12/4

Global Day of Jewish Learning

Reconstructing Judaism is participating in the Global Day of Jewish Learning, a 24-hour marathon of live-learning events located around the world and linked by video. The goal of the project is to unite Jewish communities in many countries through study of our shared texts.
