Willie McCovey -- January 10, 1938--October 31, 2018
We recently lost one of baseball's most treasured icons. Willie "Stretch" McCovey passed away peacefully on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 31 at the age of 80. The Hall of Fame first baseman and left fielder played 22 major league seasons, 19 as a San Francisco Giant, with Hall of Fame teammates Willie Mays, Orlando Cepeda, Juan Marichal and Gaylord Perry. On the right is a Topps baseball card from McCovey's early years. He broke into the league in 1959. The Giants and Willie McCovey's family are inviting fans to a public celebration of the Hall of Famer's life at AT&T Park on Thursday morning. The ceremony begins at 11:30 a.m., with fans entering through the Willie Mays Plaza gates at Third and King streets. The Giants are urging fans to take public transit because Lot A will not be available for parking, although the lot at Piers 30/32 along the Embarcadero, north of the ballpark, will be open.
RIP, Big Mac. You will be greatly missed.

Oakland A's Gold Glove winners
Matt Olson (first base) and Matt Chapman (third base) have been named 2018 Rawlings American League Gold Glove Award winners.
In his first full Major League season, Chapman, 25, led all Major Leaguers regardless of position in defensive runs saved (29). He led Major League third basemen in ultimate zone rating (10.9), total chances (484), assists (331), and zone rating (.853). He was tied for first in the American League in out of zone plays (61), second in putouts, and third in double plays (37). This is his first career Gold Glove.
Also in his first full Major League season, Olson, 24, led Major League first basemen in defensive runs saved (14), UZR (11.6), games (162), total chances (1494), putouts (1403), and zone rating (.913) while posting a .995 fielding percentage. This is his first career Gold Glove.
The last A's third baseman to win the award was Eric Chavez (2006) and the club's last first baseman to win was Mark McGwire (1990). The A's were the only team this season to feature a Rawlings Gold Glove finalist at each of the infield positions (Chapman, Olson, Marcus Semien, Jed Lowrie).

Cal Bears 13 v. Washington State Cougars 19
In a game not settled until the final minute, Cal (5-4, 2-4 Pac-12) fell to their host, the No. 10-ranked Washington State Cougars (8-1, 5-1 Pac-12) in Pullman, WA on a wet Saturday evening, 19-13. The Bears defense kept WSU under 80 yards rushing for the game, but gave up 334 yards passing. Offensively, Cal freshman quarterback Chase Garbers was the leading rusher for both teams, with 67 yards. Above, Garbers picks apart the Washington Huskies defense

Stanford Cardinal 23 vs. Washington Huskies 27
Stanford rolled into Husky Stadium in Seattle with hopes of knocking off favored Washington; but down 21-0 at halftime, a second-half Cardinal rally fell short and Stanford lost, 27-23, in the wind and rain of the Pacific Northwest on Saturday evening, November 3. Cardinal senior running back Bryce Love, shown here in a 2016 image at Oregon, had 18 rushes for 71 yards and a touchdown, while junior quarterback K.J. Costello completed 24 of 43 passes for 347 yards and two touchdowns, one each to tight end Kaden Smith and wide receiver Trenton Irwin. Stanford returns home to The Farm this weekend to host the Oregon State Beavers at Stanford Stadium on Saturday, November 10 at 6:00 p.m. Pacific Time. The game will air on the Pac-12 Network.

Sports Prep Star -- Gracie Rowland
Oak Ridge-El Dorado Hills -- Volleyball -- Senior
In her fourth year of varsity girls volleyball, outside hitter and senior Gracie Rowland is helping to lead the Trojans on an inspired postseason run. Oak Ridge likely assured itself an automatic berth to the CIF NorCal playoffs when it upset No. 2 seed Rocklin in the Sac-Joaquin Section Div. I quarterfinals on Oct. 25. The seventh-seeded Trojans rallied from a 2-sets-to-1 deficit to advance to the semifinals. Rowland had a team-best 15 kills and four aces along with six digs and a block. Oak Ridge won the first set 25-16 before Rocklin roared back with 25-12 and 25-13 wins. Oak Ridge won the fourth set 25-23 and clinched the victory by taking the fifth set 15-12. Oak Ridge moved to 19-12 on the season and Rowland upped her team-leading kills to 286 and aces to 46. She was also second on the team with 169 digs. The Trojans earned their 20th win on Oct. 30 to advanced to the Div. 1 final where they won
the championship on Nov. 3, beating St. Francis 3-2. They are now the No. 5 seed and play No. 12 Archbishop Mitty on Nov. 6.

We are living in a time of uncertainty and fear, and require the distraction of sport, for it can excite, energize, ennoble and inspire us. I woke up Saturday morning in the afterglow of yet another Warrior win, with a 168-year-old sonnet coursing through my mind.
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways,
wrote English poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning in 1850, for her beloved husband Robert.
I love the grace of Kevin Durant, the seven-foot marvel that scores at will from all over the court, quietly racking up a cool 33 points and 13 rebounds while you get up from your couch to get a beer. I love the picture-perfect shot of Klay Thompson, who can break your heart on the stop-and-pop, and oh, by the way, might drop 52 on you. I love our humble, heroic, baby-faced, shimmying point guard, our super-Steph, the closest thing to perfection on a basketball court, one whose final line read 28 points, 7 assists, and 9 rebounds--an "off-night."
But how can I count the ways that I love Draymond? I love thee to the depth and breadth and height, for the assists, the rebounds, the relentless hound-from-hell defense and the unflagging leadership. Friday night at Oracle--once again--when it came down to "winning time" as his childhood idol Magic used to say, it was number 23 who led a smothering Warrior defense, holding the Timberwolves to a measly 12 fourth quarter points, thus turning around a solid effort from the visitors, who actually led by four headed into that fatal final period. When the dust settled, the Dubs had won by 17. Case closed.
"Her sense of art is pure in itself," wrote Edgar Allen Poe of Browning. Old Eddy could have been describing the hardwood artistry that is the Golden State Warriors. Lest I forget, there is one couplet in her timeless poem which brings to mind coach Steve Kerr, the epitome of compassion, class, social conscience and humility.
I love thee freely, as men strive for right.
I love thee purely, as they turn from praise.
Let me count the ways.

From 2000-2005 I wrote a column for the late great Oakland Athletics Fan Coalition (OAFC) entitled
Elman Swings
, a play on the fact that I'm a musician. Some of you may remember the OAFC, an East Bay organization that at its peak had several thousand members devoted to keeping the A's in Oakland and guess what? They've succeeded. Perhaps one or two of you might remember my articles (more like rants) about baseball and society. So when the Ultimate Sports Guide asked me to compose regular screeds for this weekly blast called Outlaw's Outtakes, how could I say "No?" ('Outlaw' is their nickname for me.) -- Pete Elman

Sonoma Raceway's Thanksgiving Food Drive
Sonoma Raceway Thanksgiving Food Drive takes the Green Flag
All food collected benefits Sonoma County food banks
SONOMA, Calif. (Nov. 1, 2018)
-- Sonoma Raceway kicked off its season of giving with the 18
th
annual Thanksgiving Food Drive, which runs through Nov. 19.
Race fans and community members can donate non-perishable food items at several North Bay locations, and all food collected will be distributed to two Sonoma County food banks:
The raceway's annual food drive has distributed more than 36 tons of food since its inception in 2000, including 4,486-pounds of food and more than $2,500 in donations
to the
food banks in 2017.
"FISH is honored to once again benefit from Sonoma Raceway's generosity," said Sandy Drew, member of the FISH Steering Committee and Holiday Food Basket volunteer. "Last year, not only did they deliver a big batch of non-perishable food, but also a generous cash donation collected through the food drive. Through its donations, the raceway helps to make an invaluable impact on our neighbors in need in Sonoma Valley."
FISH (www.friendsinsonomahelping.org)
has been helping Sonoma Valley residents in times of need since 1970 and provides not only food, but clothing, transportation and emergency rental assistance to Sonoma Valley residents in need. FISH has been a beneficiary of the raceway's food drive since its inception in 2001. In 2017, FISH distributed 570 food baskets impacting more than 2,200 individuals. Though much food is donated, each food basket costs an additional $36 because they include fresh eggs, produce, shelf stable products and a $25 gift card supported
by cash contributions to FISH.
