Urgent Action Item
The International Code Council (ICC) has approved a change to the 2021 Energy Code language that NEGATIVELY impacts outdoor protective systems and materials for mechanical insulation and can cause system failure on outdoor piping insulation systems. A representative for NIA attended the October public comment hearing and objected to the proposed language, but the council still voted to approve it. The next step is for the ICC general membership to approve this code change and
we need your help to educate them on why this would be damaging to outdoor piping insulation systems.
If you are a voting member of the ICC or know one, please reach out to express concern and tell them to vote against Part I of CE150 to help us overturn the code council's approval.
The ICC online voting period is from November 18 to December 2, 2019. The final 2021 model code will be made public early next year by the ICC.

Is Your Company a Member of ...?
The NIA Technical Information Committee (TIC) will take a greater role in monitoring codes and standards in the future. Below is a list of organizations that NIA has identified as important for this purpose. Please contact us if you would like to suggest others. We would like NIA members who regularly attend these organizations' meetings to report to NIA if an item proposed is damaging to the mechanical insulation industry so that NIA can take action to prevent it.
- International Code Council (ICC)
- National Building Code of Canada (NBCC)
- National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA)
- International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration (IIAR)
- American Petroleum Institute (API)
If you are a member of one of these organizations and attend their meetings, please email Julie McLaughlin to
let us know. Thank you for your assistance!
