Dear Friends of CIHF,
Over the summer as we prepared our annual report we reflected on our collective successes and accomplishments throughout the past year. Reflection is essential - it is not easy to fit time for reflection into busy schedules, but it provides an essential opportunity to re-align activities with mission and values.
In the past year we've added eight new Advisory Board members, eleven new Industry Scholars, eight new Academic Scholars, and three new Faculty Fellows. We hosted eight distinguished visiting scholars who came to CIHF and Cornell to work on relevant research projects in the cross-over space between health, hospitality, and design. We hosted a mini-symposium on the subject of Patient Experience, and Roundtables on the subjects of Mental and Behavioral Health Design, and
Dining and Service Innovations Across the Healthcare Continuum
. These events provided an engaging platform for connecting industry and academic leaders.

We completed one and created several new research projects in collaboration with industry partners, using their business and operations data to provide insightful results about the impact of their initiatives in the healthcare, hospitality, and design space. Faculty Fellows and Academic Scholars continued to conduct research, teach, and write in the field.
We launched a new summer course and a new practitioner-led course, and received approval from the University to offer our new cross-disciplinary minor. We invited over a dozen guest speakers for our industry immersion course, and hosted six industry-networking lunches for students. We offered our first student innovation design competition which was a tremendous success. Our student clubs initiated a new consulting model course, began a new virtual speaker series, and are working on co-hosting a Hackathon. And there is much more - too much to list here.
It was a busy and gratifying year. Thank you to our Corporate Members for your support - you made all this possible. Thank you to all our collaborators and affiliates. Together we are successfully fulfilling the institute mission. We look forward to another year of relevant and meaningful work with you.

CIHF Roundtable: Dining and Service Innovations Across the Healthcare Continuum
|
CIHF held its sixth Roundtable on October 11th, focused on the
topic of innovations and successes in ‘hospitality services’ applied in various parts of the health care system. The event brought together over 50 industry experts, academic scholars, faculty and students to discuss case studies and ideas for new service innovations aimed at improving service operations in health care and wellness facilities. Information about the event will be posted online very soon.

enior Lecturer, Dyson School of Applied Economics & Management, Cornell SC Johnson College of Business and CALS.
All three are 2018 graduates of the Cornell University Department of Design + Environmental Analysis, and developed and submitted the project as part of their coursework for Professor Ramzy's spring Competitions Studio. Their project, Bellumo, is a sleep technology aimed at helping hundreds of millions of people worldwide that have trouble falling asleep at night. An alternative to potentially harmful medications, Bellumo is a glowing, hanging mobile that guides users through breathing exercises the help them fall asleep. The form of the mobile was inspired by the bio luminescence of jellyfish and their elegant pulsating shapes, and the glowing and dimming of the LED lights guides users to inhale and exhale for a set amount of time, helping them relax deeply.
Each year the Shark Tank of Wellness competition challenges university students around the world to create bold and viable new concepts in wellness (from technology to architecture to hospitality). Students who made it to final judging presented their innovations in person to the Summit delegates, a "who's who" in the global wellness world.

Pat McBride
Vice President of Clinical and Compliance
|
We welcome Pat McBride to CIHF in her new role as CIHF Advisory Board Member for Cappella Living Solutions.
Pat joined Christian Living Communities in 2010. Pat developed and implemented a nursing mentorship program for nurses and certified nursing associates that has increased retention rate to 85 percent, while developing a strong mentor leadership group. She has worked closely with local hospitals and care partners to improve resident care transitions. Pat is also involved in state survey preparedness as well as managing risk and ensuring compliance. Her focus is to assure that the clinical team is prepared to provide the highest quality of compassionate care for the residents they serve. Pat graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from Villanova University and her Masters of Nursing from University of Colorado. In her over thirty-year career, Pat has held various positions including staff nurse, clinical educator, Colorado Board of Nursing member, College adjunct faculty member, and several management positions.

Lynne has over 30 years of dedicated healthcare experience with a hands-on management style and a personal approach to client relationship building.

This diverse network collaborates with CIHF academics on projects and initiatives with a focus on integrating the fields of hospitality, health management, policy, and design.

Membership provides a platform for industry professionals to connect, build lasting relationships, and collaborate across academia and business.

Affiliates participate in collaborative activities, lead research or curriculum projects, provide feedback on strategic priorities, and create industry-focused deliverables that link hospitality, health, and design.

Michael Ravinder Kingra
Lecturer, Operations, Technology, and
Information Management
Cornell School of Hotel Administration
Ravinder Kingra is a lecturer in food and beverage management at the Cornell School of Hotel Administration (SHA). Before joining Cornell's faculty, Kingra most recently worked in Maine in special events, catering, and restaurant marketing and branding. He brings over 25 years of food-service operations experience to the school. Having worked in corporate- and independently owned full- and quick-service operations, Kingra has a diverse background from which to draw inspiration for his teaching.
He is a member of SHA's Academic Integrity Hearing Board (AIHB) serves on the undergraduate admissions committee, and also serves as the faculty advisor to the school's Epicurean Society. He co-authored a Cornell Hospitality Quarterly article that examined pre-opening training in hotels and restaurants. He has consulted with Gimme! Coffee, Dinosaur BBQ, and various independent restaurants in New England. In fall 2014, he was asked to deliver a presentation on technology and marketing in restaurants at the Costa Rican National Restaurant Congress in San Jose, Costa Rica.

Australian National University
Byron Keating is a Professor of Management in the Research School of Management at the Australian National University. He is also Director of the Service Innovation Lab, a service-focused management and research consultancy based in Canberra, Australia.
Byron has a strong focus on industry engagement. He was Vice President of the Service Science Society of Australia (2010-15) and is on the International Advisory Board for the Service Education and Research Initiative (2009+). Byron was also the sole academic representative on the Australian Government's Services Leaders Group (2013-14).
His research interests are concerned with the role of emerging technologies in supporting the design and delivery of complex services. This interest began with his PhD research which examined the impact of the Internet on service delivery and consumption, and continues today in the areas of artificial intelligence, location-based services, and big data. This research has been acknowledged by numerous awards including two international dissertation awards, an Endeavour Fellowship to work with the National University of Singapore examining the impact of ethics within service supply chains, and most recently, an Australian Research Council Linkage Industry Fellowship to further his work on service experience within Australian cultural institutions.
Of particular relevance to the Cornell Institute for Healthy Futures is Byron’s work in the area of complex social services. This work has seen him partner with government and not-for-profit organizations to improve service-related outcomes in the areas of mental health, gambling, unemployment, and disability.

Douglas Morrice, Ph.D. '90

Douglas Morrice holds the Bobbie and Coulter R. Sublett Centennial Professorship in Business. He is also Professor of Operations Management and a Senior Research Fellow in the University of Texas Supply Chain Management Center of Excellence, a company-sponsored center dedicated to developing research and teaching programs in supply chain management in the Red McCombs School of Business. He served as Information, Risk, and Operations Management Department Chair from 2007-2011. Dr. Morrice received his Ph.D. in Operations Research and Industrial Engineering from Cornell University. He has worked on projects with Schlumberger, SAP, Dell, HEB Grocery Company, and the University Health Sciences Center, San Antonio. His healthcare work has been funded by a University of Texas Systems grant and the Texas Catalyst program. Most recently, he has been involved in a project on materials management in the construction industry that is being funded by the Construction Industry Institute. Dr. Morrice has over 70 technical publications and 2 patents.

Brooke Dias is a junior majoring in Biology and Society in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and Karen (Yue) Ding is a senior attending the Cornell School of Hotel Administration. Karen is a returning officer for the club from her position as Vice President of Education in 2016-17.
The club is a collaborative environment for undergraduate students interested in hospitality, healthcare, and design featuring weekly discussions, guest speakers, and special events.
Karen and Brooke presented the club's semester agenda at the Fall 2018 CIHF Advisory Board Meeting on October 9, which includes:
Education Series, Speaker Series, Field Trips and Seminars, and a Fundraising Pumpkin Sale.
“I have full confidence in Karen and Brooke to lead the undergraduate chapter. They will make very dedicated co-presidents,” said outgoing CUHF President Vivian Li, SHA ’18.

CIHF and the Department of Design and Environmental Analysis offer a minor in Healthy Futures open to all Cornell undergraduate students. This innovative minor— the first of its kind — provides a high caliber, trans-disciplinary education in the fields of health, hospitality, and design, and may be of particular interest to students enrolled in health, wellness, policy, and hospitality related majors, or students interested in applying their education to problem-solving in the population health and wellness space.
