Trash Talk

Meet at Zanotto's,
1520 Southwest Expwy.
Instead of sitting around drinking coffee, I've decided to make our time together one of action along with information sharing. Let's pick up trash while we talk! Our second session of "Trash Talk" will take place on Friday, November 16th, from 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., starting out at the new Zanotto's (1520 Southwest Expressway San Jose, CA 95126).
Residents of District 6 are invited to join me and my District 6 Office team to pick up trash along Southwest Expressway. This will be a great opportunity for District 6 residents to talk to me and my staff about issues you are concerned with in our district and clean up our neighborhoods all at the same time! All trash-collecting equipment will be provided.

October Trash Talk Recap
On October 19th, I hosted my first "Trash Talk" at the Business Circle. Thank you to 7-Eleven for your partnership and to the residents from Google and Green Waste for volunteering their time. Together, we picked up 16 bags of trash. Join me for my next one on November 16th!

Walk and Bike to School Day
October 10th was Walk and Bike to School Day. I celebrated with 5 local schools, the Willow Glen Neighborhood Association and many parent and teacher volunteers, who helped make the morning fun and exciting for the students!

Schallenberger and Booksin Elementary Walkathons
On Friday, October 12th, I celebrated Schallenberger Elementary School's Walkathon! On Saturday, October 13th, I also celebrated Booksin Elementary School's Walkathon! I'm proud of our local schools, administrators, teachers, parents/guardians and students for participating in these healthy and fun fundraisers.

Community Service Officer Graduation
On October 12th, 19 men and women graduated from the 4th Community Service Officer (CSOs) Academy. Thank you to these 19 individuals for taking the oath to protect and serve our community.
CSOs are an integral part of the San Jose Police Department. This is a civilian position and they are deployed into the field to assist police officers by responding to and investigating lower priority calls for service, so police officers will be available to respond to higher priority emergency calls for service and have more time for proactive enforcement.
Types of calls that the CSOs respond to and investigate include:
- Burglary - commercial, residential, vehicle
- Petty Theft
- Grand Theft
- Vehicle Theft - initial report report and/or recovery
- Vandalism
- Non-injury traffic collisions
- Missing persons
- Road Hazards
- Directs and controls crowds and traffic at accidents or special events including setting up cone and/or road flare patterns.

Be Our Guest
Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits (SVCN) hosted their annual Be Our Guest event where community leaders "serve" the community in a whole new way! Each celebrity server also brings an elaborate and decorative pumpkin for guests to bid one. The pumpkins are auctioned to the highest bidder. All funds raised will support SVCN's programs.
This year, I decorated my pumpkin showcasing the 2019 College Football National Championship.

2018-2019 Holiday Collection Schedule
If your usual garbage, recycling, and yard trimmings collection or street sweeping day falls on or after Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year's Day, your collection and sweep day will be one day later during that week.

Recycle Right and Green Tidings for the Holidays
We rely on you to Recycle Right!
Prevent food waste this holiday season!
- Plan ahead to reduce your household food waste. For tips, visit www.sjenvironment.org/foodwaste. All food scraps belong in your black garbage cart and will be removed for composting.
Recycle your holiday tree
- Curbside collection of holiday trees will be on your regular collection day from December 26, 2018 to February 1, 2019. Remove stands, tinsel and decorations. Cut into 5-foot pieces and set out by 6:00 a.m.
For Service
- Contact your recycling, garbage, or yard trimmings collection company to report missed collections, service issues, replace damaged carts, or to change your cart size. Go to www.sjenvironment.org/lookup to find your service provider, collection and street sweeping day.

Help Make Your House More Earthquake Resilient
To help protect your family and home from earthquake damage, you can receive a $3,000 grant toward a seismic retrofit from Earthquake Brace + Bolt (EBB), a state-supported and FEMA funded program. EBB offers grant funds to Californians with older homes in earthquake prone areas (like Silicon Valley).

Sewer Replacement or Repair Grant Program
City of San Jose property owners who reside at their property as their primary residence may receive a grant to cover 50% of the replacement or repair costs, with a maximum of $3,500 per property, to a sanitary sewer line lateral. The City will make the grant program available to qualifying applicants until the $300,000 fund is depleted.
To qualify, the homeowner must submit an application along with video evidence of damage to the sewer lateral, proof of ownership, and three verifiable replacement or repair bids to the Dept. of Transportation (DOT). Applications will be reviewed and approved by DOT staff, and if approved, the City will issue a "Contingent Award Letter".

Generation to Generation - Willow Glen Community Center
In 2017, under the leadership of Mayor Sam Liccardo, the City of San Jose partnered with Encore.org and community organizations in San Jose to launch the Generation to Generation campaign. One year later, in collaboration with Age Friendly San Jose, the campaign is launching a program to set a new standard for community involvement for older adults to help tackle some of the City's toughest problems. The campaign will empower seniors to serve the city's young children in projects between youth-serving organizations in the community, community centers and libraries with the goal of creating vibrant and sustained intergenerational programs throughout the city.
The Willow Rose Chapter of the National Charity League (NCL), a community service, leadership, and cultural organization of mothers and daughters, have designated the Willow Glen Community and Senior Center as one of their San Jose-based charities.
This year, during July and August, NCL members aged 12-18 produced a five-week series called "Dance through the Generations" with older adults at Willow Glen. During the sessions, the high school students engaged with the older adults in dances from ballroom to hip hop. At the end of the sessions, NCL members and seniors presented a showcase featuring the dance routines that they had perfected and performed together, to the delight of their friends and families.

Christmas in the Park Employment Opportunities
Looking to make some extra money this holiday season? There are a few seasonal job opportunities with Christmas in the Park.
- Park Managers - work during the set-up and run of the event. Must be 18 years or older
- Event Tear-Down Staff - work December 26th - December 30th to help tear-down the event. Must be 18 years or older
- Park Seasonal Staff - to help the Santa Booth and sell merchandise. Must be 16 years or older.

$0 Late Fines for Children's & Teens' Library Materials
The San Jose Public Library is breaking down barriers, not piggy banks! SJPL is excited to announce that children's and teens' items are no longer charged any late fines. Expanding access to youth materials is critical to the academic success and career achievements of students. By eliminating late fines on these items, we encourage everyone to utilize the materials and resources the library has to offer. Start checking out library materials, worry free!

BVNA Holiday Toy Drive
This holiday season, Buena Vista Neighborhood Association (BVNA) will be working with Santa Claus and the San Jose Fire Department to spread the joy throughout the community, collecting new, unwrapped gifts for children of all ages (infants to teenagers).
Toys can be dropped off at Buena Vista Park on December 1st from 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Toys can also be dropped off during the BVNA Holiday Potluck on December 4th.

Utility Patent Specialist 1-on-1 Meetings
The Silicon Valley USPTO is excited to announce the ability for entrepreneurs and independent inventors to schedule a 20 minute 1-on-1 person meeting with a USPTO utility or design patent prosecution specialist to discuss the patent process at our regional office in San Jose City Hall.
The meetings will provide individuals with an opportunity to seek assistance with their inventions and the patent process.

Airbnb Open Homes

Litter-ature Poetry Contest
A new initiative titled "Litter-ature" is a creative response to litter awareness and prevention through a student poetry contest. Now until November 15th, middle and high school students are invited to submit up to 5 short poems that inspire people to put their trash into litter cans, protecting nature, wildlife, and our streets. Content may inspire awareness, personal responsibility, connections to community and environmental responsibility.

Letters to Santa
Write a letter to Santa and receive a reply! Beginning Nov. 13, every child who leaves a letter for Santa in the mailbox next to the tree in Santana Row Park will receive a reply from the red-clad, jolly fellow! Each letter must include the child's name and a mailing address.
The letters must be dropped in the box by December 11th to guarantee a response before Christmas. Santana Row Park is located between Z Gallerie and Left Bank Brasserie.

One Warm Coat Charity Drive
Help keep the holidays warm. Beginning on Black Friday throughout December, Santana Row, will be collecting new or gently used coats for those in need. Drop off your coats throughout the season at the Santana Row Concierge, CineArts Theatre and Crate and Barrel in Santana Row.
