More than 30 million people in the United States have diabetes and that number is growing. This National Diabetes Month, we urge everyone with diabetes to make your care a joint effort between you, your loved ones and your health care team.
There are many things you can do to help control your condition. In addition to managing blood glucose (often called blood sugar), blood pressure, and cholesterol, and not smoking, people with diabetes need to make healthy food choices, stay at a healthy weight, move more every day, and take their medicine even when they feel good. Research has shown that these efforts can dramatically lower the risk of many diabetes-related health problems, including heart, kidney, nerve, and eye diseases.
Specifically, this year's National Diabetes Month is focused on promoting health after gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy. Mothers who've had gestational diabetes need to know that they and their children have an increased lifelong risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases has more information about gestational diabetes and other forms of the disease.
