This past Friday we successfully welcomed back many of our Knights as these students are part of the Face-to-Face instructional model in place during these first nine weeks of 2020-2021. I am pleased to share that everything ran smoothly and the time invested this summer on our new health & safety protocols really paid off. Thank you to our students and their families for their cooperation during day #1.
We have announced our 2020-2021 Teacher of the Year and Support Person of the Year (pictured at the very top of this issue). If you happen to see in person or interact online with either Ms. Alfonzo-Reyes or Mrs. Baez in the coming days, please take a moment to congratulate them. This is a major career achievement by both which was based upon nominations from their peers. We are very proud of their duly deserved recognition!
If you have a student attending Lake Nona, please make every effort to participate in our LAUNCHED@HOME VIRTUAL PARENT NIGHT Tuesday at 4:45 pm (please see flyer below). We will be discussing how to effectively use our online student information apps.

On Monday, August 24th we will distribute 5 breakfasts and 5 lunches 30 minutes after the final bell in the bus loop. Meals for LNMS LaunchEd students will be served on Mondays every week except when a holiday falls on a Monday such as the upcoming Labor Day holiday.

OCPS Face Mask Requirement
|
|
A Face Mask / Covering is REQUIRED at all Orange County Public Schools.
 Subject to the exceptions set forth below, each student, employee, visitor, vendor, or other person are required to wear a face covering (more specifically described below) at all times while at or inside a school/facility, or other property and/or vehicle owned, leased, or operated by the School Board (when there is more than one (1) person in the vehicle).
Face Mask/Covering Guidelines:
* Commercially produced and disposable masks are acceptable.
* Masks with respirators are not permitted.
* Masks must cover both the nose and mouth, fit snugly against the sides of the face with little to no gaps and are made of a solid material.
* Face masks, neck gaiters and neck buffs are permitted, provided they consist of multiple layers of fabric.
* Face coverings may not be made of lace, mesh, or other largely porous material.
* Face coverings with clear panels are permitted provided they fit snugly against the sides of the face with little to no gaps.
Enforcement of policy:
All students are expected to follow these face-covering requirements while in school or at school sponsored activities/events for the health and safety of themselves, school staff, and others. Students who do not comply should be reminded of the policy. If a student refuses to comply, the provisions of the Code of Student Conduct will be followed. Students who refuse to comply may also be sent home and will be required to receive their educational instruction via remote learning.

| If you look closely, the students are seated only at the ends of the tables and the tables themselves have been halved. You can also see social distancing floor markers spaced at 6-foot intervals.

School Board upholds face-to-face plan for families who selected it.
The School Board of Orange County held a special board meeting at the Ronald Blocker Educational Leadership Center Monday, Aug. 17. These are the highlights of the meeting:
School Board votes (6 to 2) to uphold face-to-face plan for families. For more than five hours, Orange County School Board members held public comment and discussion on the recommendations from the Medical Advisory Committee and any potential revisions to the OCPS 2020-2021 Optional Reopening Innovative Plan. After thoughtful discussion, the school board voted to uphold the previous plan that was approved last month. For families who selected face-to-face instruction, students will attend school in-person beginning Friday, Aug. 21. All of the health and safety measures that have been put in place will proceed as planned with extra vigilance. This is the updated Health and Safety Procedures Manual.

THINK LONG-TERM
 Dr. Edward Banfield of Harvard University, after more than fifty years of research, concluded that "long-time perspective" is the most accurate single predictor of upward social and economic mobility in America. Long-time perspective turns out to be more important than family background, education, race, intelligence, connections, or virtually any other single factor in determining your success in life, while in school, and at work. Your attitude toward time, your "time horizon," has an enormous impact on your behavior and your choices. People who take a long view of their lives and careers always seem to make much better decisions about their time and activities than people who give very little thought to the future. The lesson for our Knights? Today we are only beginning the third week of 2020-2021. Give some real thought as to what you want to accomplish this school year with your grades, with your personal interests such as sports, music, friendships, earning money, etc. Write these goals down and start taking action this last week of August. And remember this time proven expression: "One year from now, you may wish you had started today!"Make it a great week Knights!
