Key Findings from the 2018
Women in the Workplace Report

This October, LeanIn.Org and McKinsey & Company released Women in the Workplace 2018, a comprehensive study of the state of women in corporate America. This year's report shows that progress is stalled on gender equality.

Stating the business case for change is crucial to moving the needle in organizations. Only 38% of companies set goals for gender representation. Only 27% of employees see managers calling out biased language when they hear it. We need to be intentional about eradicating gender bias in our workplace if we want to see any significant change.

"Change starts with treating gender diversity like the business priority it is."

IWL "Activated Male Allies"
at our half-day workshop on October 26

An engaged group of men and women joined IWL CEO Kim Graham Lee and co-facilitator Robert Lescano for the IWL "Activating Male Allies" workshop hosted at Katz, Sapper & Miller. We truly are better together, and we saw that lived out in the room filled with so many leaders. It was powerful to come together with passionate men and women and have rich, productive discussion on sometimes uncomfortable topics.

This workshop combined instruction, exercises, and group discussion covering these important topics:

  • What it means to be an ally and what that really looks like
  • The role that unconscious bias plays in gender interactions
  • Frameworks to help with "courageous conversations"
  • Approaches to positively engage men/more men in the change
  • How to start or enhance your current "males as allies" effort
IWL is focused on moving the needle on gender equity in the workplace. If you're interested in bringing IWL into your organization to deliver this workshop or  others that we offer, contact Kim Graham Lee at [email protected].

IWL is very grateful to amazing male allies like John Sullivan, VP-Global Marketing Services for Roche Diabetes Care, Inc. A half-day workshop in partnership with
Leadership Johnson County

Tuesday, November 27, 2018 | 9:00am - 12:00pm
Dietz Center, Franklin College | 101 Branigin Boulevard, Franklin, IN 46131

The data shows that women are good for business. However, it also shows that gaps still exist in pay and advancement for women. In fact, the most recent report for Indiana shows the pay gap between men and women is only widening. Add to this dynamic the national tsunami of sexual harassment cases that are highlighted daily bringing an intense light on a very real imbalance of power blocking women.

Now is the time to focus on positive change. This interactive workshop is designed to help both women and men understand these dynamics and leverage the knowledge and tools presented to favorably move the needle on equality for women in the workplace.

Workshop Objectives:
  • Help leaders/organizations understand that they aren't fully leveraging their talent bench given gender inequality and imbalance.

  • Generate awareness and understanding about unconscious bias and how that further cascades to gender bias.

  • Gain knowledge about how to better integrate and leverage the inherent strengths that both women and men bring to the workplace.

  • Provide tools and frameworks overall to help women and men in this important conversation.

Cost: $49 for Leadership Johnson County and Franklin College alumni, Franklin and Greater Greenwood Chamber of Commerce members.  $59 General.

Mark your calendar for next year!

One of our main takeaways from the multi-generational panel at the 9th Annual IWL Indianapolis Conference was the importance of appreciating the work of the women that came before us. These women made a difference by speaking up, so this November, we're focusing on Using Your Voice. This month we challenge you to connect with yourself and be confident in your voice. Are you recognizing where your voice may be needed? Are you advocating for people or movements in your life you feel strongly about? One way you can use your voice this November is by heading to the polls to vote - a right that many women and male allies before us worked to ensure. Your voice matters! When you speak up and speak with confidence you stay true to who you are. Consider speaking up on a matter you feel strongly about at work. Are you keeping your opinions to yourself in fear of what others will think? Are you ignoring how you feel about something because you're unsure if it is your place to say something? Work on channeling the inner voices in your head into your outer voice, and use your voice to make a difference!
