MYC After School Program - November 2018!

The month of November will bring some great new and old programs to the Youth Center! As the weather gets colder, we will have some great options available to keep kids active indoors! We will revamp our boxing program that was once truly loved as well as add a new program called Alateen! For those interested in a drama and comedy club, there will also be sign ups in the lobby of the youth center for an "Creative Kids Comedy TV Show" group that starts in December! Check out the full calendar for program offerings  here !

The Milford Youth Center has become the focal point for the children of Milford. It hosts many different activities and events throughout the year for the youth of Milford and/or the Milford Schools. The Milford Youth Center's after school program is open for youth ages 8-18, free of charge, from 2-6 pm, Monday through Friday (check monthly calendar, website and social media for any changes due to weather, holidays or vacation weeks).  All Youth members must be picked up by time of closing (unless they walk home).  Pick up is outside of the building on 24 Pearl St. Please visit our  website  for both our  weather policy  and  traffic control plan

All participants must fill out a  registration form annually to be a member. Once this form is completed and returned to the Center, the member will be provided with a key tag and ID number. (if they are new members to the program). This will be how the Youth Center staff will track attendance. Therefore, all members are required to bring in their key tag in order to enter the facility. If key tag is lost, the Center will charge $1.00 for replacement.

The game room, lounge and gymnasium will be offered daily. There will be structured programs that participants must sign up for to participate in. Members are also able to use our washer and dryer, free of charge during operation hours. The Center also offers a free snack and dinner program, due to the collaboration of CACFP, Hockomock Area YMCA and the Milford School Food & Nutrition Services department.

Volunteers are always welcome to assist with the after-school program or during the morning hours! We are always looking for help during the after school hours, 2-6 PM. You may also run a program/activity during the after-school program. We also need volunteers for our monthly evening events. Please  contact us  here if you would like to volunteer.
MYC Welcomes a New Program Coordinator and AmeriCorps Member!

We are so excited to welcome Marissa and Amanda officially to the Youth Center and the community! Amanda joins us as our new full-time Program Coordinator and Marissa is our new  Social Capital Inc.  AmeriCorps member!

"My name is Amanda and I am the new program coordinator here at the youth center! I was raised in Hopkinton, MA where my passion for working kids with was born! I am so excited to m ake some community ties and to continue the great programs that The Youth Center has to offer, while also adding some new and unique programs to the schedule! In my free time you can find me at Hopkinton State Park with my husband and two golden retrievers or racing dirt bikes all over New England! I look forward to meeting you all! Do not hesitate to contact me if you have a program that you would be interested in seeing on the schedule!"

"My name is Marissa Urella and I'm the new SCIAmeriCorps Youth Leadership Coordinator serving at the Milford Youth Center! I am 21 years old and I'm from Webster, Massachusetts. As the MYC Youth Leadership Coordinator I hope to inspire as many young adults as I can to develop a strong work ethic and a desire to involve themselves in their community through various community-based events throughout the 2018-2019 school year. I also aim to inspire the Youth Council to take action as leaders and inspire younger kids in the community as positive role models."

MYC Boxing Program!

The Milford Youth Center is very excited to announce the relaunch of our once loved BOXING PROGRAM! Many thanks to John Geffert and the Ruggiero Family for the generous $1,470 donation from a Golf Tournament that was created in the memory of Branden Ruggiero. Because of community member like them, we are able to start the program this month!

The program will start on November 6 th , 2018 and will run every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30-4:30PM! Joining us as volunteers are Mark Castiglionie and Shalton Soto! This program is designed for ages 8-18 and will focus on boxing fundamentals and having some fun!

About the volunteers: Shalton was born and raised in Milford, MA! He started martial arts at the age of town and hasn't looked back since! Shalton's goals for the boxing program are to make martial arts more readily available and to help kids fall in love with the sport! His long-term goal is to own his own studio so he can teach as many kids as possible! He loves the golden age of boxing and idolizes Muhammed Ali and Dewan Singh!

Mark Castiglione is a school resource officer, though he does great work with youth in this aspect, he would like to be able to build stronger relationships with the youths of the community and make younger children aware that he is here to help! He was raised in Hopedale, MA and first started boxing in college. He trained at the PAL in Framingham as well as the Worcester YMCA! Through working at the youth center, he hopes to be able to bring boxing to more kids in the area and draw more kids in for after school activities! His goals are to make sure that kids spend their time being productive and not destructive while working towards favorable attitudes and efforts! He considers Mickey Ward and Arturo Ghatti to be his boxing idols!

Waters Corp. Invites MYC to Pats Game!

We would like to thank Waters Corp. and their staff for inviting members of the Youth Center to attend the Patriots vs. Dolphins game! Milford Youth Center staff, along with eight After School members, attended the game at Gillette Stadium! The group was able to enjoy a day full of activities: brunch, games, photos at the Hall of Fame and to meet some Patriots Cheerleaders! Finally, we got to enjoy great seats near the end zone and a great game! Thank you again Waters, for allowing us to take part in such a fun day!
Halloween Party at the MYC!

Our Halloween party this year was one for the books! The kids have continued to tell us how much fun they had and that is all thanks to the amazing volunteers who helped to make the day special! We had the blow up jumpee out, being run by David St. Laurent, who even wore a Halloween mask for the kids! Thank you to Lisa, who runs our Cardio Dance Jam program every week for making a special edition Halloween themed dance class that the kids loved! We also had an arts and crafts  table that was a huge hit, thanks to Linda Abrams, Donna Arthur, and Susan Schiavi, of ERA Key Realty Services, who all painted faces and did crafts alongside the kids!  Some extra special thanks go out to Kim Wach who not only had the daunting task of running donuts on a string, but also made over 50 sugar cookies for the kids to decorate after dinner!

Thank you to Joseph Vettese, from UniBank, for hanging out and playing games with the kids both in the game room and gymnasium! Thank you to Mike Walsh, Town Selectman and Sandra Caproni, Youth Commission member, for stopping by and visiting! Thank you also to Ron Taylor, board member, who helped us break the entire party down within an hour! Finally, thank you again to Sonia Benjamin and members of the MYC youth council for making candy bags for the kids and to the United Way of Tri-County for donating glow sticks to pass out as well! We really and truly could not have these special events without the help of our community volunteers!

The  MYC  works together with other community organizations to provide resources and opportunities for youth to make healthy decisions. The MYC works to provide local youth with the necessary activities and events that help them develop physically, mentally, socially and emotionally through their childhood years.
