How is preaching ministry different today than in previous generations? How is it the same?
What does it mean to proclaim the gospel in a Lutheran key today? How can we understand proclamation more expansively to include occasions and experiences beyond the monologue sermon, such as
music,
drama,
dance, and other forms of the
arts?
At this year’s
MNYS Bishop’s Retreat, our ELCA Rostered Ministers explored responses to these questions during the keynote presentations, conversations, and during times of worship, while also experientially exploring
music,
drama,
dance, and other
visual arts as forms of gospel proclamation. Visit the
MNYS Facebook page to watch the livestream videos of all the worship services.
The keynote speaker was the renowned preacher, professor, author, and bishop,
William Willimon. Click the links, below, to watch Professor Willimon’s presentations:
- Beginning with the Word. Christianity as inherently acoustical and auditory. Jesus as the embodiment of good news. Faith comes through hearing.
- Preaching as the most important work of the pastor. How the proclamation of the church is changing. The greatest challenges in preaching today.
- The joy of preaching in a world that thinks it already knows God. How preaching is a core, countercultural activity of the church. Sustaining the ministry of preaching.

ELCA Advocacy | ACTION ALERT
On September 7th, the Administration proposed a regulation change that will undermine existing child protection standards for immigrant children. The proposed regulation would overturn minimum child protection standards set by the courts in the
1997 Flores Agreement.
While the Flores Agreement outlines that children are not safe in detention facilities and should not be kept in detention for longer than 20 days, the proposed regulation allows the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to keep children in detention indefinitely, despite the
psychological and physical toll of detention.
The ELCA has historically stood against the detention of children and families. Detaining families seeking protection is immoral. Join the ELCA advocating against the unlimited detention of children!

"In other words, your two or three minutes of sharing at our
Town
Hall Meetings can offer hopes, strengths, and concerns. I do ask you to keep a focus on our election of the next bishop and the future of our synod. Do you believe that God is about to do a new thing?
|
|
I sincerely believe this is a sacred time and sacred opportunity.
I am praying for the process, but I am also praying for the bishop chosen to bring the ministry of oversight to all the people of the Metropolitan New York Synod."
