The Mel King Institute for Community Building offers training and educational opportunities to help build just and inclusive communities. This newsletter contains MKI and partner trainings, upcoming conferences, educational opportunities, and resources for further exploration of the field.
APPLY FOR THIS SPRING SERIES
This “state of the art” governance capacity-building training series will provide your board members with innovative, best practices; concrete strategies for integrating a racial equity lens in your governance practices; and tools to help strengthen your Board’s effectiveness and ability to impact your community.  

This highly experiential training will be offered to 3‐5 CDCs who will work together as board teams, along with their Executive Directors. Participation includes two full-day training sessions, a board self-assessment, and one hour of coaching between sessions.

Calling all Mentors!
The Mentoring Program seeks to enhance networks of Community Development professionals and support mid to senior level professionals, and board members who demonstrate potential for advancement and growth into positions of leadership within the field. The application has been closed for mentees, but we are still looking for mentors.

Join MAPC and Springboard for the Arts for this exciting workshop exploring the nuts and bolts of creative placemaking as an approach to creative community development. We will cover practical tools and strategies for working with local artists in creative placemaking and community engagement to address your community’s challenges and opportunities.

This hands-on interactive training proposes five steps that break down the process of creating a public participation strategy. Learn best practices for thoughtful community engagement including examples of meeting design and engaging ways of getting public participation outside of the traditional public meeting format.
The Symposium will provide an overview of the intersection of housing and economic development and the roles that banks and community development organizations can play. Through 2 panel sessions, experts will discuss how to creatively use capital and economic development tools to support affordable housing that will positively impact resident health.

Upcoming MKI Events
Resident Board Member Training

This training helps participants handle challenges unique to their particular role as both a resident and a Board Member of a public housing authority. Participants learn about the role of the Board Member, take an in-depth look at budgets and capital improvement plans, and receive a free resource binder. They get a chance to network with each other to discuss experiences and share stories in order build confidence to perform their duties and contribute to a thriving Housing Authority.

Resident Leader Training 

The Resident Leader Training is a free two-day training for any resident of public housing who would like to enhance their leadership skills, learn about new state regulations, or get involved in a tenant group. Leaders of Local Tenant Organizations, “Task Forces” and other tenant groups are highly encouraged to attend. The training focuses on state regulations about tenant participation and also covers essential leadership skills such as team building, outreach, conflict resolution, and running meetings.
