The Keys Blast from Ed Krane & Friends
Nov. 5, 2018

Check out this pair of tough guys. It's award-winning actors Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in a publicity still for 'The Godfather II' back in 1974.  The sequel which proved there can be exceptions to the sequel inferiority rule is The Godfather II. Although it serves as a sequel and prequel with parallel storylines. One picking up with the 1958 story of Michael Corleone (Pacino) protecting the family business after an attempt on his life. The prequel portion depicts his father's journey, Vito Corleone (De Niro), from his childhood to the founding of the Corleone enterprise.

Pictured here are Adam West and Burt Ward paling around while working on the set of Batman. Which believe it or not, actually became a somewhat rare sight after the two had worked together for a while.    It seemed a battle of epic proportions centered around the male ego was soon at play on a regular basis. Mostly on Ward's end though...
Ward felt like he was a sidekick in real life, he felt he was underpaid and not treated equally to his co-star Adam West. He also claimed the rest of the cast was awarded more luxuries than he was.
The 'Thunderbirds' British sci-fi TV show comprised of 32 episodes and was on between 1964 and 1966. It was produced using a form of electronic marionette puppetry (dubbed "Supermarionation") combined with scale model special effects sequences. The show was set in the mid-2060s and was a follow-up to the earlier Supermarionation productions Four Feather Falls, Supercar, Fireball XL5, and Stingray.
The central story surrounds the exploits of ex-astronaut Jeff Tracy, (founder of a life-saving organization called International Rescue), and his five adult sons, who pilot the Thunderbird machines. The Thunderbird machines are an awesome, technologically-advanced fleet for land, sea, air, and space rescue crafts.

The Lennon Sisters are vocal group initially consisting of four sisters Dianne Barbara (a.k.a. DeeDee), Peggy (Margaret Anne), Kathy (Kathleen Mary), and Janet Elizabeth. The Lennon Sisters appeared regularly on The Lawrence Welk Show, for thirteen years, from 1955 - 1968.
While the original quartet was composed of the four eldest sisters, younger sister Mimi replaced Peggy upon her retirement in 1999. Dianne has also since retired. The current line-up of the Lennon Sisters is now a trio consisting of Mimi, Janet, and Kathy. They still tour around the country.
Here's a still photo of Harrison Ford as Deckard In Blade Runner, this is arguably one of his best roles (certainly in his top five). The 1982 neo-noir science fiction film was directed by Ridley Scott and is a loose adaptation of the 1968 novel by Philip K. Dick, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?  Set in 2019, in a dystopian Los Angeles, the film depicts a future in which synthetic humans known as replicants are bioengineered by the powerful Tyrell Corporation to work on off-world colonies. Burnt-out cop Rick Deckard (Ford) is tasked with hunting down a group of escaped replicants. During his investigations, Deckard meets Rachael, an advanced replicant who causes him to question his work.
This is one science fiction film that has had a significant impact on the genre as a whole. It's influenced many science fiction films, video games, anime, and television series. It won the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, and was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

Colleagues of faith -

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1pm, in the front courtyard of Congregation B'Nai Zion (750 United St, Key West)
We will be hosting an Interfaith Gathering to mourn the deaths in Pittsburgh, stand united against antisemitism, and share prayers for a better future.
I will be meeting with representatives of the Congregation in the next few days to craft the gathering. I will also issue press releases about it.

Pending further developments, my vision is to begin with the traditional prayer for the dead, the Mourner's Kaddish, followed by short statements expressing our unity in standing against antisemitism, one or two appropriate readings/responsive readings,  then prayers for the better future, and (if someone else can lead it) an appropriate song and circle of community.
There might be an after-gathering chance for people to sign onto the Not in Our Town pledge.
I would be glad to have partners from IMA in crafting all of this.
Please share the information about this community gathering with your faith communities.  Dr. Becker

Key West Resident & Famous Author Carrie Jo Howe
"ISLAND LIFE SENTENCE"

AMAZON Link

Peg Savage has contractually agreed to move to Key West, Florida. The smudged signatures on the damp cocktail napkin are irrefutable proof.
"An adventure..." her husband Clark says.
Peg can't swim; she's afraid of bridges (there are 42 of them); and she doesn't want to leave her friends. However, after a bottle of Cabernet, a move from Chicago to the southernmost city in the United States seems like the best decision ever.

But now Clark has taken a long term job in Cuba and she's on her own.
Neither her dog Nipper, nor the ghosts in the attic, offer up any good advice. But how hard can it be living in paradise?
Peg dives into island life but the more effort she makes, the wider her wake of catastrophes. She is tortured by a paddle board, a giant poisonous toad, the local Conservation group, and the patron saint of hurricanes. Not to mention the persistent sweat rash under her left breast.
A tropical depression descends on the island - one that can't be cured with medication. Peg must gather her strength if she has any hope of surviving the storm.

Jonathan Woods Pulp Crime Fiction Author

Pulp crime fiction writer Jonathan Woods, a former Key West resident, will be returning to the scene of the crime, Key West, to read and sign copies of his newest crime novel
Kiss the Devil Goodnight.   The book reading and signing will be held at Key West Island Bookstore, 513 ½ Fleming Street in old Key West on Thursday, November 15 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Jonathan, a former artist member of the Studios of Key West, was an attorney for a high tech company in his former life-and is now a recovering attorney. He started writing seriously in 2002 and his first book, Bad Juju & Other Tales of Madness and Mayhem was published in 2010. The book won a 2011 Spinetingler Award for best crime short story collection. Subsequent books, launched in Key West, are A Death in Mexico and Phone Call from Hell and Other Tales of the Damned.

Besides writing crime stories, Jonathan collaborated with Key West film auteur Quincy Perkins on the writing and production of a 24-minute neo-noir film called Swingers Anonymous, based on Jonathan's short story of the same title appearing in the crime story anthology Dallas Noir (Akashic Books, Brooklyn). The film premiered at the Key West Film Festival and went on to screen at festivals in Miami, New York, L.A., San Antonio and the Cannes Film Festival in France.

Learn the art of pinhole photography in Key West Art & Historical Society workshop led by Jodell Roberts

A photo made from a pinhole in a coffee can? Photographer Jodell Roberts will show you how in this Key West Art & Historical Society pinhole photography workshop at Fort East Martello, 3501 S. Roosevelt Blvd. "The Lenseless Eye" will offer participants a new means of creative expression and image-making through one of photography's oldest methods during this workshop that takes place over two consecutive weekends: Fridays, November 30 and December 7 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm; Saturdays and Sundays December 1, 2, 8, and 9 from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

"This workshop is an opportunity to experience and explore a different photographic medium, technique and vision. Pinhole photography with film (paper) is a hands-on, self-determining approach to making photographic art," says Roberts. "Being actively involved in every aspect of the photographic process empowers the creator and imbues the work with the essence of the artist."
Register now for this limited-enrollment workshop. Cost for the workshop is $150 for Society members and $165 for nonmembers. For more information and to register, visit kwahs.org, click 'tickets,' or call Adele Williams at 305-295-6616, extension 115.  Your museums.  Your community.  It takes an island.

How are we grappling with climate change on individual and collective levels in a place we are actively still creating? Portable Memories in Rising Seas is an ongoing participatory project about sea level rise that connects lived experience with memory and climate change. Uncertainties of climate change are a threat and, at the same time, a catalyst for expression, action, and a renewed sense of belonging. Sponsored by Helen / Ben Harrison Gallery

Will Fernandez has recently joined our gallery, his paper mache and paintings range from classically Key West to satirical comments of the human predicament. Pan dances with his plump naked beauties, a big busted woman walks a tight rope and an ostrich stands 40". Will is gestural with his strokes, be it with a brush, wet paper or wood. Come See Enjoy! Call ahead though, we're not always open, but are typically just a few doors down and ready to open the gallery. In the Next Few Issues we'll have some of Will's Paintings and Sculptures

MORE of Part 11
"A Look Back at the 60's & 70's Through Photos" From Groovy History.
Here's a photograph of a very relaxed Frank Sinatra, munching down on a sandwich in his newly remodeled $100K kitchen in his Palm Springs home. The singer, actor, and producer, was one of the most popular and influential musical artists of the 20th century. Having sold over 150 million records worldwide, Frank Sinatra is one of the best-selling music artists of all time.
"Ol' Blue Eyes" led a colorful life, aside from his career, his political and alleged mafia connections were just as attention-grabbing as his turbulent affairs with high profile women. He was married to Ava Gardner, Mia Farrow, and Barbara Marx.  Sinatra was honored at the Kennedy Center Honors in 1983, awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Ronald Reagan in 1985, and the Congressional Gold Medal in 1997. Sinatra was also the recipient of eleven Grammy Awards, including the Grammy Trustees Award, Grammy Legend Award, and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
The Streets of San Francisco is a 1970s television crime drama starring Karl Malden and Michael Douglas as two detectives in San Francisco. The show ran between 1972 and 1977 on ABC, for a total of five seasons. In it, "A veteran cop with more than 20 years of experience is teamed with a young Inspector to solve crimes in San Francisco."
The show's synopsis could be descriptive of their working relationship (just swap out the word 'cop' for 'actor').  Malden and Douglas bonded both professionally and personally during their time on the series. Twenty years after the show ended Malden referred to Douglas as "the son I never had". Douglas referred to Malden "my mentor," and both actors expressed how much they enjoyed working together on the show.
Howdy Doody was a pioneer in children's television programming, the show is credited with setting the pattern for similar shows for years to come. It had circus and Western themes which don't sound like they'd mesh, but they do. The show ran from December 27, 1947, until September 24, 1960, and was one of the first television series produced at NBC in Rockefeller Center, in Studio 3A.  Howdy Doody was the puppet and the show's human host was Bob Smith, or as he's best known, Buffalo Bob. Smith created Howdy Doody when he was a radio announcer, so the character was just a voice over radio airwaves. It was early puppeteer Frank Paris, a puppeteer who was asked to create an actual Howdy Doody puppet for television.
Back in 1980, supermodel Cheryl Tiegs launched a signature line of clothing and accessories exclusively for Sears. While it's common now, this was the first venture into retail products ever launched by a supermodel. By 1989, The Cheryl Tiegs collection neared 1 billion in sales and she was credited largely contributing to the chains turnaround. Once again Tiegs graced the cover of TIME, but this time it was for a cover story titled "Sassy Sears." But Tiegs didn't stop there, in 1995, she branched out and launched "Cheryl Tiegs Sportswear,"exclusively for QVC and then she developed a line of wigs and hair accessories for Revlon.

KEY WEST, FL, October 31, 2018- Florida Keys Community College celebrated the career of Debbie Leonard, Director of the President's Office, who is retiring after 28 years of service to the College.  College leaders donned academic regalia to salute Leonard in a light-hearted ceremony, where FKCC President Dr. Jonathan Gueverra presented her with a "Diploma of Retirement."  She was further honored with a namesake dessert, the "Little Debbie," created by FKCC's Culinary Management students.
An alumnus and a donor, Leonard is well-known on campus for her contributions to numerous College events over the years.  Most notably, she provided years of leadership in the planning and performance of FKCC's commencement ceremonies.

Leonard began her career in the academic advising department in 1990.  She has worked with four presidents and contributed substantially to leadership transitions and maintaining historical knowledge of the institution.  In 2012, the Association of Florida Colleges recognized Leonard with a "Distinguished Service" award.
"Trying to replace someone who has devoted more than a quarter century of service to the College is like trying to replace a part of the College itself," said Gueverra.  "We will miss Debbie's commitment to customer service and her dedication to our students and the community."

"Luxury Graffiti" by Stephen Wilson 34 X 45 Mixed Media on Designer Boxes

Stephen Wilson is a mixed-media artist best known for his artistic exploration of the intersections between traditional craft and contemporary culture through blended use of handicraft techniques with modern technologies and pop iconography.  High fashion influences are quite prevalent in his work.  His redefinition of textile and embroidery-based art forms evokes questions regarding luxury consumerism and high-low art distinctions.
