Space Coast Area Transit now offers instant contactless mobile ticketing powered by Token Transit. The app can send a 1-Ride, 10-Ride or 30-Day bus pass directly and instantly to a smartphone. SCTPO to Host Both In-Person and Virtual ADA Bus Trainings |
|
In 2018, the SCTPO completed the ADA Bus Stop Assessment, where we collaborated with Space Coast Area Transit to analyze bus stops for ADA compliance and improvements. Due to the interest in this process and implementation, we will be holding two separate ADA Bus Stop Trainings.
The training will focus on ADA compliance at public transit bus stops. Topics will include what makes a bus stop non-compliant, what is required, and details regarding amenities, such as shelters and benches.
Attendees can either attend in-person or virtually based on their preference. The in-person option will include a site visit to nearby bus stops. AICP and PE credits will be available for both. *Registration Required!

Smart Growth America Releases 2021 Dangerous By Design Report |
|
Smart Growth America recently released the 2021 Dangerous By Design Report, ranking the Melbourne-Palm Bay-Titusville area as the fourth most dangerous metro area in the nation for walking.
The number of people struck and killed by drivers nationwide while walking increased by an astonishing 45 percent over the last decade (2010-2019). The four most recent years on record (2016-2019) are the most deadly years for pedestrian deaths since 1990. During this ten-year period, 53,435 people were hit and killed by drivers. Read more here.

Space Coast Area Transit Adds Three Routes on April 3rd |
|
Space Coast Area Transit will begin service on three new fixed routes starting April 3, 2021, servicing Titusville, Port St. John, and adding an additional bus route in the beach area south of Patrick Air Force Base and north of US 192. |

Route 10, Central Titusville: will operate weekdays from 7:00 AM to 7:55 PM and on Saturdays from 8:00 AM to 5:55 PM. Major stops include Titus Landing, Titusville Library, Parrish Healthcare Center, Publix Supermarket at Colonial Coast Crossing, Parrish Health and Fitness, Titusville Walmart, and Aldi Supermarket. At Titus Landing, riders can transfer to Route 1 Titusville/Viera, Route 2 Titusville, and Route 5 Titusville/Mims. To view the new Route 10, go to https://loom.ly/EJToyO0.

Route 11, Port St. John: will operate weekdays from 7:07 AM to 8:04 PM and on Saturdays from 8:07 AM to 6:04 PM. Major stops include Cocoa Commons, Publix at Indiavista Center, Brevard Heath Alliance, Port St John Plaza, and Port St John Social Security Administration. Route 26, South Beach: This revised route will continue to serve the beachside between Indian Harbour Pace @ Publix and S. Atlantic Ave in Cocoa Beach with a 60-minute headway instead of the current 2-hour frequency. Riders can then transfer to the new Route 30, which incorporates the southern portion of the former Route 26. This change gives Route 26 enough time to transfer every hour to Route 9 Cape Canaveral/Cocoa Beach at S. Atlantic Ave. and S. 13th St. To view the updated Route 26, go to https://loom.ly/xx_YCwo

US 1 Resurfacing: Brevard/Indian River County Line to
North of Goat Creek in Grant-Valkaria
|
|
The Florida Department of Transportation is currently working on proposed improvements on U.S. 1 from the Brevard/Indian River County line to north of Goat Creek in Grant-Valkaria. The purpose of the project is to enhance safety and operations along the corridor.
The project will resurface this segment of U.S. 1 to extend the life of the existing roadway. The project also proposes to replace and upgrade the traffic signals at the intersections of Micco Road and Barefoot Boulevard to improve safety and traffic flow. A southbound left turn lane will also be constructed at Micco Road to help enhance safety for vehicles making a U-turn at the intersection. Other pedestrian and bicycle improvements:
- Curb ramp reconstruction in compliance with ADA at the signalized crosswalks
- Adding bicycle through lanes at the intersections
- Guardrail upgrades and necessary drainage modifications

Roadway Improvements: West Eau Gallie Blvd. from Jones to Sarno
|
|
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is making roadway improvements to West Eau Gallie Boulevard (State Road 518) from Jones Road to the Sarno Road/Trent House Drive intersection in Melbourne.
There are two projects associated with these improvements.
-
Project 439778-1: will widen and resurface West Eau Gallie Boulevard to add an additional eastbound through lane from east of I-95 to the intersection of Sarno Road/Trent House Drive.
-
Project 439779-1: involves improvements to the I-95 interchange ramps, including extending the right- turn lane from eastbound West Eau Gallie Boulevard to the southbound I-95 on ramp and adding a second left-turn lane from westbound West Eau Gallie Boulevard to the southbound I-95 on ramp.
In addition, crews will make drainage improvements, install concrete curb and gutter systems and resurface the roadway from the I-95 access ramps through the Sarno Road/Trent House Drive intersection. Eastbound and westbound bicycle lanes will be added within the project limits. At the west end of the project, sidewalks will be constructed on the north and south sides of the roadway.

The Great Florida Air Show Announces 2021 Performer Lineup at MLB |
The Great Florida Air Show, presented by Northrop Grumman, has announced its 2021 lineup of world-class performers appearing Saturday, May 15, and Sunday, May 16 at Orlando Melbourne International Airport.
In their first Melbourne appearance since 2015, the U.S. Navy Blue Angels will headline the Air Show flying the Team’s new aircraft, the F-18 Super Hornet. 2021 marks the Blue Angels’ 75th anniversary since its inception in 1946, and it is the first time in 35 years that the Team has upgraded its aircraft.
Scheduled premier performers include: United States Special Operations Command Parachute Team; Official U.S. Air Force F-16 Viper Demonstration Team; U.S. National Aerobatic champions Mike Wiskus of Lucas Oil Air Shows, nine-time consecutive winner Rob Holland, and Mike Goulian (Red Bull Air Races Champion); Larry Labriola, piloting the Aero L-39 Albatros; Gregory “Wired” Colyer flying warbird Ace Maker T-33; and Scott "Scooter" Yoak in his World War II-era Quick Silver P-51.

Port Canaveral Underway as North America’s First LNG Cruise Port |
Port Canaveral marked a historic milestone in the safe, reliable transportation and delivery of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in North America as the Q-LNG 4000, a cutting-edge ship-to-ship articulated tug and bunker barge (ATB) arrived at America’s first LNG cruise port. Nicknamed the “Q4K”, the purpose-built ATB has been designed, engineered, and internationally and U.S. certified to provide safe and reliable ship-to-ship transfers of the cleaner-burning LNG. The Q4K will operate in Port Canaveral providing LNG fuel to cruise vessels, notably to Carnival Cruise Line’s LNG-powered Mardi Gras which will homeport at Canaveral beginning this year.
“This project has been four years from concept to reality and we are excited to welcome the Q-LNG 4000 to fuel the next generation of cruise ships,” stated Capt. John Murray, Port CEO. “We have been working closely with our cruise partners, all the federal and state regulatory agencies, and industry leaders to promote this industry initiative.” Read full article.

Brightline First in North America to Construct Rail Underpass Under Highway System Using Innovative Box-Jacking Method |
Brightline Trains will make construction history when it builds a rail underpass under SR 528 in Brevard County, becoming the first in North America to use the innovative box-jacking method under a highway system and the first to do so under live traffic.
The SR 528 tunnel, located just west of US-1, will be constructed over a two-week span using box-jacking. The method uses hydraulic jacks to move precast concrete boxes into place, creating a tunnel under the roadway. An anti-drag system will be used when installing the boxes to allow for traffic to continue to travel overtop the work.
The SR 528 box-jacking project begins on Sunday, March 14 and will last through Tuesday, March 30. During this time, the highway will be reduced to one lane in each direction and some entrance and exit ramps will be closed to reduce congestion on the highway. Full detours of SR 528 will be limited to overnight hours at the start and finish of the project.

Micco – Railroad Crossing at Barefoot Blvd.
Full road closure, 7 a.m., Thursday, March 18 through 5 p.m., Friday, March 26. Closure will also occur 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, April 9.
Detour Information
- Eastbound Barefoot Blvd. traffic will be directed to travel south on Ron Beatty Blvd. to Micco Rd, travel east on Micco Rd. to US-1 and travel north on US-1 to access Barefoot Blvd.
- Westbound Barefoot Blvd. traffic will be directed to travel south on US-1 to Micco Rd., travel west on Micco Rd. to Ron Beatty Blvd., and travel north on Ron Beatty Blvd. to access Barefoot Blvd.
LONG TERM CLOSURE: Melbourne – Railroad Crossing at Prospect Ave.
Full road closure through May 2022 for bridge work at Crane Creek. Crossing will be fully closed until completion of work.
Detour Information:
- Eastbound Prospect Ave. traffic will be directed to Stone St., travel south on Stone St. to WH Jackson St., travel east on WH Jackson St. to US-1 and travel north on US-1 to access Prospect Ave.
- Westbound Prospect Ave. traffic will be directed to US-1, travel south on US-1 to WH Jackson St., travel west on WH Jackson St. to Stone St. and travel north on Stone St. to access Prospect Ave.

A friendly Spring Break reminder that children ages 16 and under are required by law to wear bicycle helmets. More children ages 5-14 go to emergency rooms for bicycle-related injuries than with any other sport; many are head injuries. Helmets are the single most effective piece of safety equipment for riders of all ages. |

Riding Safely on Sidewalks |
Every bicycle rider - regardless of age or skill level - has a right to be aware of safe and courteous riding techniques. Knowing how to ride safely on sidewalks is a part of these skills, and is especially important for kids. If you live in an area where riding on the sidewalk is legal, check out this BikeSafe video.

According to Florida Law, three feet is the minimum distance drivers must place between their vehicle & bicyclists when passing. Drivers, be respectful of people biking and give them plenty of room when you pass. |

The SCTPO will hold the Bicycle, Pedestrian, and Trails Advisory Committee (BPTAC) Meeting on Monday, March 29, 2021, beginning at 5:30 PM at the Center for Collaboration, located at 1100 Rockledge Blvd. Rockledge, FL 32955. The BPTAC reviews plans and policies regarding bicycle, pedestrian, and multi-use trail projects. BPTAC members represent: local government, law enforcement agencies, educators, cyclists, hikers, walkers, environmentalists, businesses and interested citizens.
If you have the capability, the SCTPO is strongly encouraging public citizens to please attend virtually. Attending virtually will help to reserve those in-person limited seats for those who may not have access to attend online.
