St. Sarkis Wall of Fame!

Basketball Party
Reported by Mrs. Christine Garzilli

What is Christmas? It is tenderness for the past, courage for the present, and hope for the future. We are in the present stage of having our new generation starting up in the ACSA league. We see the past and respect the long line of courage and strength that came from those teams. We hope to strive for the best and make St. Sarkis proud all while building our future players.

The Annual St. Sarkis basketball party was held on Saturday, December 21st with so many new and old in attendance. The night started off with a full array of home cooked delicacies and a blessing from Der Nareg. After everyone was feeling jolly and plump, DJ Greg got kids young and old on the dance floor to work off all the food. A great mix of music was played for parents to enjoy as well as the players. And of course we enjoyed some traditional Armenian soorch bar, a party is not complete without it!

Finally a break was needed and a grateful speech was given by the Juniors head coach Ariy Nalbandian thanking the parents for their commitment and support to the league. After the charismatic speech, the starter group and junior group all exchanged in a fun grab bag, picking a surprise gift card to further enjoy the holiday gift giving. The party continued with more fun music and some delicious desserts to top off the night. The party was a huge success! Thank you to all those who organized, brought food and came out to enjoy one another in this wonderful season of Christmas.

Selected Post party media comments reinforced the basketball family spirit and the friendships it promotes:
Great party yesterday! Thank you to all the organizers..kids had an awesome time...what it is all about.
Thank you to all the parents for their generous food and beverage donations.   Everything was delicious
Yes thank you for all organizers everything was excellent Merry Christmas to all

The Feast of St. Stephen

This Advent Season
An A dvent tree will proudly display the names of families or individuals who have chosen to sponsor each week's message. By making a donation during Advent of  $100.00 or more  your name will be displayed on the Advent tree. The messages of the season should be kept in our hearts all year.

Advent is a season of penitence, anticipation, and preparation. Advent serves as a reminder of the original anticipation of the birth of Christ, as well as the anticipation for Christ's return. Ideally, Advent should be a time of quiet reflection and meditation. In modern times the period leading to Christmas is far from calm, and often is stressful and frenetic. It is a good time to remember to pause and reflect on the proper observation of the birth of our Lord and Savior.

Don't get trapped in the spree of Christmas shopping this Advent season. Set your priorities straight and follow these six paths. Get rich in spirit and prepare a place in your heart for Jesus to be born.
We hope you will participate in the new initiative.
Prayerfully,
Fr. Nareg Terterian
Pastor

THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE  HEBREWS (7.11-25)
Now if perfection had been attainable through the levitical priesthood-for the people received the law under this priesthood-what further need would there have been to speak of another priest arising according to the order of Melchizedek, rather than one according to the order of Aaron? For when there is a change in the priesthood, there is necessarily a change in the law as well. Now the one of whom these things are spoken belonged to another tribe, from which no one has ever served at the altar. For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, and in connection with that tribe Moses said nothing about priests.
It is even more obvious when another priest arises, resembling Melchizedek, one who has become a priest, not through a legal requirement concerning physical descent, but through the power of an indestructible life. For it is attested of him,
"You are a priest forever,      according to the order of Melchizedek."
There is, on the one hand, the abrogation of an earlier commandment because it was weak and ineffectual (for the law made nothing perfect); there is, on the other hand, the introduction of a better hope, through which we approach God.
This was confirmed with an oath; for others who became priests took their office without an oath, but this one became a priest with an oath, because of the one who said to him,
"The Lord has sworn      and will not change his mind,
'You are a priest forever'"-
accordingly Jesus has also become the guarantee of a better covenant.
Furthermore, the former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office; but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. Consequently he is able for all time to save[   a] those who approach God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (19.11-28)
While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear at once.
He said: "A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. So he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas.'Put this money to work,' he said, 'until I come back.' "But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, 'We don't want this man to be our king.' "He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it. "The first one came and said, 'Sir, your mina has earned ten more.' " 'Well done, my good servant!' his master replied. 'Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.' "The second came and said, 'Sir, your mina has earned five more.' "His master answered, 'You take charge of five cities.' "Then another servant came and said, 'Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.' "His master replied, 'I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow? Why then didn't you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?'
"Then he said to those standing by, 'Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.' " 'Sir,' they said, 'he already has ten!' "He replied, 'I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away. But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them-bring them here and kill them in front of me."
After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.

Liturgical Calendar (From Crossroads: E-Newsletter of the Armenian Prelacy)
HOLY APOSTLE JAMES AND JOHN THE EVANGELIST
Saturday, December 28, the Armenian Church commemorates the Holy Apostle James and John the Evangelist, "Sons of Thunder." Both held prominent positions among the twelve apostles, and they were called "Sons of Thunder" by Jesus (Mark 3:17) probably because they were impetuous and quick tempered as suggested in Luke 9:54 and Mark 10:35-41. James was a Galilean fisherman, who was called along with his brother John, to be two of the twelve apostles. They, together with Peter, formed the inner core among the twelve who were present at the raising of the daughter of Jarius, the Transfiguration, and the agony of Gethsemane. James was the first of the apostles to be martyred by order of Herod Agrippa (Acts 12:1-2). He is the patron saint of Spain and according to tradition his body was brought from Jerusalem to Santiago de Compostela, which became and continues to be a popular destination for pilgrims. John is also known as "The Divine." It was to John that Jesus on the cross entrusted the care of his mother. Paul names Peter, John, and James as the "pillars" of the Church (Galatians 2:9).
