Dear CRS family,

We are all stepping now into uncharted waters. We face uncertainty and fear as we strive to elevate safety and the preservation of life as our highest of values. It is particularly challenging that at a time when we most need support, we also collectively bear the responsibility to maintain physical distance. From our biblical beginnings in Eden we were enjoined, “It is not good for a person to exist alone” (Genesis 2:18). Our early sage Rabbi Hillel echoed this same idea, “Do not separate yourself from community” (Pirkei Avot 2:5). One of our greatest of blessings at Congregation Rodeph Sholom is our belonging, our powerful declaration of connectedness in the face of a world of separation. For 178 years we as a congregation have typically done this by gathering in body, lifting each other in presence through every peak and valley. But the heart of our community will always be our relationships, and these are gifts and responsibilities that we hold together.

Offering Support
Many of you have been reaching out with generous offers of help. There will likely be many ways we can all support one another at this time. For those who are able and willing, we invite you to fill out this brief form to inform us of the way(s) you would be able to provide care in the days ahead. Later this week we will circulate a similar form for those who would like to request assistance from our volunteers.

Financial Assistance
Increasing disruptions and shut downs have very real and challenging financial impact on many in our congregation. With gratitude to the leadership of the Hebrew Free Loan Society, a Coronavirus Financial Impact Loan was just created to provide interest-free loans of $2,000-$5,000 to residents of New York City who are facing financial challenges caused by the Coronavirus outbreak. These loans address:

  • Lost wages due to being unable to go to work
  • Child care costs due to school closures
  • Small business losses
  • Canceled study abroad programs
  • Related medical costs

You Are Not Alone
As your clergy, we know that each of us in this community faces a different reality at this moment. Whether our living environment comes with other human supports or not, whether we hold networks of personal friendships or not, we all bear both blessing and challenge at this time. Whatever your experience, whatever your struggle, we are here to be with you. If you need any support, whether practical, emotional, or spiritual, please reach out to us at clergy@crsnyc.org – you are not alone, and we stand together in community.

With prayers for resilience and safety,
Your CRS Clergy Team
