SEPTEMBER 2018
Greetings,

I invite you to join me in recognizing the instrumental contributions made by Hispanics and Latinos in our community as we commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month. Celebrated annually from September 15 through October 15, Hispanic Heritage Month honors the culture and traditions of Latinos throughout Central Florida and the United States.

From vibrant cultural offerings to entrepreneurship, we value the contributions from our Hispanic and Latino residents to make Orange County the best place to live, work, and raise a family. Orange County's Board of County Commissioners (BCC) officially commemorated Hispanic Heritage Month with a proclamation at our BCC meeting on September 18 with the Hispanic Heritage Committee of Greater Orange County (HHCGOC), a volunteer-based organization founded in 1999 with the purpose of providing opportunities that promote and highlight the contributions made by individuals of Hispanic descent in our community.

HHCGOC proudly hosts several events annually, and on September 18, the Committee hosted Orange County's annual kick-off celebration on the lawn of the Orange County Administration Center, featuring a vibrant mix of cultural music and dance performances, delicious food, a beautiful exhibit featuring the incredible talent of local Hispanic artists and a proclamation presentation.

On October 21, join us as Orange County celebrates the fourth annual Mayor's Cup Soccer Tournament Finals and Trophy Ceremony, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Young Pine Park, 5201 Young Pine Rd. Adult and youth teams began competing in a series of matches on September 16, and tournament finalists will compete to win at the Mayor's Cup Championship. I know the players have been working hard to represent their teams and academies. I look forward to cheering them on!

Soccer has quickly grown in popularity throughout the United States and specifically in Orange County. Nicknamed the "Soccer Capital of the South," Orange County has emerged as a top American soccer destination thanks to our amazing Orlando City Soccer and Orlando Pride teams.

The diversity of our Central Florida population is one of our key strengths. From extraordinary culture, arts and leadership, to our Hispanic businesses and organizations, including the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando and Prospera, our Latino communities are truly essential to Orange County's success.

I am extremely proud to commemorate the accomplishments of our Hispanic community and invite you to join me in celebrating our cultural diversity as we continue to observe Hispanic Heritage Month.

Sincerely,
Teresa Jacobs
Orange County Mayor
