FEATURED EVENT: American Education Month Photo Contest
American Education Week is coming up November 12-16, and we'd like to celebrate our amazing staff all month long by kicking off a photo contest! For each of the remaining Hot News issues in November, we will be highlighting a different photo of a student or group of students with their favorite teacher or other staff member. The student(s) could be holding a sign that describes what they appreciate about that staff member, or the information could be shared separately. To have a photo considered for the contest, either Tweet it to @hillsboro_sd, or e-mail or Google share it to [email protected]. The student(s) submitting the best photo will win lunch with Superintendent Mike Scott!

A Look Inside Hillsboro Schools
UPCOMING EVENTS
HSD's bi-annual newsletter, "A Look Inside Hillsboro Schools," will be coming to your mailbox this week. Please read it to see what has been happening at each of our schools and at the district level, and check out the special four-page pull-out section dedicated to the 2017 Bond. This special section features information about bond work that took place over the summer, as well as the projects that are planned for 2019. A Spanish version of the newsletter will be ready in two weeks and will be mailed to all families who have indicated Spanish as their home language. Additional hard copies will be available at each school or can be requested from the
Communications team.

Brookwood's 1999 Time Capsule Unearthed
It took a couple of hours and a 50-foot-long trench, but the time capsule buried by Brookwood Elementary first-graders in 1999 was unearthed on Friday, Nov. 2.
The retrieval was done in advance of the site work that will be taking place to prepare for construction of the replacement school. Unfortunately, the time capsule was damaged and water had seeped into its plastic storage bag. Terry Sayre, one of the first-grade teachers at the time (now at Tobias), and Michelle Jensen, current Brookwood principal, collected the contents to dry them off and ultimately display them at the school. A highlight was the arrival of some of the former first-graders, now young adults, to observe the initial digging and reminisce about their time at Brookwood.

Strategic Plan Update
Our six Strategic Plan SMART goals for 2018-19 are aligned to our commitments to connect students to Community, Culture, and Career, as well as to our strategic objective of all students graduating with career and college readiness skills. The goals do not cover all of the work that's taking place across the District, but they are research-based strategies that are intended to help us make measurable gains toward our objective. The 2018-19 Work Plan and SMART Goals brochure and update document are both available on our website under About Us/Strategic Plan.

Vehicle Idling Reduction
At the end of September, the School Board adopted a new policy
and guidelines around the reduction of vehicle and equipment idling time on District property. The policy is meant to not only reduce carbon emissions and improve health and safety, but also to enhance fuel efficiency and engine life. Buses are encouraged to limit idling to no more than 10 minutes during warm-up and when the vehicle is being restarted after a prolonged period of shutdown, and to no more than 5 minutes during dismissal. Exceptions are granted for severe weather conditions. Community members are also encouraged to refrain from idling their vehicles on District property.

Every Day Matters
In a month that's notorious for having several no-school days, it's important to remember that every day of a student's education matters! Teachers work hard to ensure time is well-spent and meaningful when school is in session. Also remember that there is a strong correlation between regular attendance and higher academic achievement. The Oregon Department of Education recently launched its Every Day Matters campaign; check it out to learn more about the importance of attendance!

Remember to Vote
