Happy New Year!
As we greeted each other this past Sunday, Mary Harper and I exchanged observations about New Year’s Eve and our pets. We were in total agreement that what may be a grand celebration to some, is not quite so for our pets. In fact, advance New Year’s Eve celebrations in my neighborhood this past Monday, sent my 70lb dog Jazz scrambling under my chair for cover; while my cat pawed her way into a convenient hiding place in an under-counter cupboard with a door that was easily pried open. Since I am committed to living with my pets, my concern for them far outweighed my hope that the celebrants were safe and having a grand time of it!! What’s more, I was absolutely sure I was right, at the time. But was I?

It can become either a contest of wills or a long slow slog through the details of communication at the simplest levels. Is this avoidable? Yes, of course. We can become social hermits at one extreme or social embarrassments on the other, with a handful of options in between.
