Summer Reads

Get into the library over the Summer break and grab a bundle of books to unwind with.

If you enjoy an intriguing mystery, steamy romance, wild wild westerns or a motivating biography - there is something for everyone.

Studies have shown  that reading  can reduce stress  by up to 68% and is more effective than other relaxation methods, such as listening to music or drinking a hot cup of tea.

Children's library membership

Brooklyn with her own library bag

It was great to see so many children visit our libraries in December and take up library membership and receive their very own card and bag (like Brooklyn, pictured).

If you missed out on joining up your child in December, don't worry; it is not too late!

There are so many benefits to your child having their own library card:
  • Begin a lifelong love of reading
  • Library cards can easily be linked together using the Libraries SA app to keep track of all the items on loan
  • Kanopy Kids movies are available to stream for free from home.
See library staff now to get started.

Shelf esteem podcast - Peter Drew

Have you listened to our library podcast yet?

In our latest episode, artist Peter Drew joined us for a conversation at the Parks Library about his work and memoir Poster Boy

Peter's artworks have been exhibited at the Art Gallery of South Australia, however  you may recognise his work that is installed on city streets across Adelaide. His posters 'Real Australians Say Welcome' and 'Aussie' campaigns started a life of their own and generated conversations all over the country.

Summer Slide...

You've probably heard of "summer slide" - but what exactly is it?  Summer slide is the phrase used to describe the slide backwards that many children make in reading and maths skills over the summer. It's possible for a child to regress 2-3 months back in terms of reading level.

Summer slide can happen to even the brightest kids, and even a couple of weeks away from school can soften skills.
How do you combat this? Just  20 minutes of reading a day can keep the  slide at bay and may increase reading skills over the summer.

We've got tons of great books for kids of all ages - stop by your library to pick up a nice big stack and keep your kids' brains growing!

 eBook Holiday Reads

An expert team have worked with OverDrive to curate a list of the most popular titles. A 'Holiday Reads' collection of eBooks & audiobooks has been created for your listening and reading enjoyment.

Don't worry, lots of copies have been purchased so you won't have to wait long!
