St. Michael's Academy

We had a lovely All Saints Day celebration yesterday with Msgr. David Joyce from Holy Name. Students from every grade represented a myriad of saints.
During his homily, Msgr. Joyce reminded us that we are all saints and our challenge is to live like a saint. Each day during the month of November, we will learn about a different saint during morning prayer.
This month, we will be remembering all of our deceased relatives and friends as we assemble our All Souls bulletin board. Please see below for further details.
Today, we held our annual school Walk-a-thon assembly to distribute this year's awards. Tune in next week for a complete listing of winners.
We are looking forward to our parent/teacher conferences next Tuesday. Please remember that our Book Fair will also be going on Monday through Thursday and all of the students will have the opportunity to attend. It will also be open late on Tuesday during the conferences.

Congratulations to our perfect attendance dress-down winners! In order to qualify for the weekly drawing, a student must have no absences, tardiness or early dismissals the previous week of school. We select one from PreK - 2nd grade, one from 3rd - 5th grade and one from 6th - 8th grade. Congrats to this week's winners!

Greetings From The Gym
As the first term winds down, we have continued to be active in Physical Education working both with our bodies and our minds.
The PreK and Kindergarten students have enjoyed locomotor movement activities such as skipping and running and have had a fun time playing shark Attack and Move and Freeze.
First and second grades have been taking part in exploratory activities such as an obstacle course and scarf activities working on coordination. They have enjoyed playing Unicorn Tag and Team Tag.
Third and fourth grades have been working on activities focused on teamwork playing games such as Group Juggle, Octopus Tag and a scooter board tag game with teams. They've also enjoyed 4 Corners and Rock, Tree, Bridge tag.
Fifth and sixth grade students have been participating in cooperative activities such as 1000 Catches, Triangle Tag and Island Escape.
And our seventh and eighth grade students have been playing sport type games such as Nitroball and Ultimateball and cooperative activities as well.
Overall things are going great in the gym and we are looking forward to the rest of the year as we introduce new activities and play games designed to promote fitness and fun!

All Saints Day
This feast honors all the saints, known and unknown. All Saints Day was first celebrated on May 13, 610, when Pope Boniface IV proclaimed the day the "Feast of All Holy Martyrs in Rome." The intent was to honor all martyrs who were not included in local records. In 835, Pope Gregory IV changed the date and name to November 1 and the Feast of All Saints. There are many saints who are not popularly known or who are not celebrated during the course of the liturgical year. This holy day of obligation is an opportunity to remember and celebrate their lives.
Our students presented many of the saints at a Mass on Thursday celebrated by Msgr. David Joyce from Holy Name Church. Thank you Msgr. Joyce for helping us to remember that we are all saints in God's eyes.
All Souls Day
All Souls' Day is a holy day that commemorates the faithfully departed and is celebrated in the Catholic faith on November 2nd.
We will be creating an All Souls bulletin board and would like families to submit names of loved ones to be included on the board. We will pray for them throughout the month of November.

Spelling Bee

Spelling Bee News
The annual Spelling Bee will take place on
March 7th at St. Mary's Academy in Longmeadow. Mrs. Nicoliello and Mrs. Croteau will be coaching the St. Michael's Academy team this year.
Students in grades 4-8 are eligible to compete in the Bee. Since we are only allowed to have 25 students on the team, interested students will be given a list of words and try outs will be
Thursday, November 8th at 7:30 a.m. in room 226.
Students who qualify for the team will receive a registration packet with information. Please return the registration page to your homeroom teacher
before December 1st. The first Spelling Bee meeting will be
November 30th at 7:30 a.m. in Room 226 where the contestants will get their practice lists. Regular practices will start the first week of January, and continue every Thursday at 7:15 a.m.
The Spelling Bee requires 100% commitment and students should plan on attending all practices. We hope to have a great team this year!

Grade 5 Learns About Pharmacology
On Tuesday, October 30th, the 5th grade science classes welcomed Mr. Morrill, a pharmacist, to St. Michael's Academy!
We have been learning about physical and chemical changes, chemical reactions, and how chemical technology is used in our lives. Mr. Morrill talked to the students about studying chemistry in college and about the many aspects of his job as a pharmacist at Walgreen's. He graciously answered many questions and we learned about filling prescriptions for people and even pets!

Grade 8 Learns About Our State Government
Our thanks go out to State Representative Angelo Puppolo for his recent visit to St. Michael's Academy. Rep. Puppolo, who represents the 12th Hampden District, also happens to be a parent of one of our 8th grade students!
The students heard an excellent presentation on the fascinating process of how a bill becomes or does not become a law. They also received a printed publication on the history, government and symbols of the Commonwealth.
Thank you Representative Puppolo for taking time out of your busy schedule to visit us.
Grade 1 Learns About Fire Safety
Our first grade students were able to learn about fire safety during to a recent visit from Firefighters Evan Cournoyer and William Sullivan from the Springfield Fire Department. Firefighter Sullivan also is the proud parent of one of our first graders.
The students learned the importance of having a family escape route and a meeting place outside in case of a fire. They were also able to see what a firefighter would look like in their full gear in case they were ever to respond to a student's home.
We send out a huge thank you to Firefighters Cournoyer and Sullivan for helping to keep us safe from fire danger.

Gray House Food Drive
St. Michael's Academy will be holding a food drive for our friends at The Gray House for Thanksgiving between now and November 16th.
Items requested include frozen turkeys, gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, canned vegetables, rice, pink, red or black beans, potatoes, canned yams, canned sweet potatoes, cake mix, frosting, pie crust and pie filling, brownie or cookie mix.
Remember...every donation contributes to a happy Thanksgiving for a family in need!

PreK and Kindergarten Open House
Do you know of a family with a PreK 3 or 4 year old or a Kindergarten student that is looking for a GREAT school?
Pass on the news about what a great school St. Michael's Academy is and invite them to attend a special informational session for prospective students and their families on Tuesday, November 27th from 5-6 p.m. This event will be geared specifically for PreK and Kindergarten families. The little ones will enjoy doing a craft in one of our nearby classrooms while parents receive information about our school.

Have you been saving all of your cans and bottles for the first SMA Can and Bottle Drive?The event will be held on
Saturday, November 17
from 9 a.m. to noon.
Make a little extra room in your garage or basement and start saving now!

St. Mary Church, located at 27 Somers Road in Hampden, will sponsor a Benefit Concert by Dee Reilly on
Sunday, November 18 at 2 p.m. in the church.
Concert proceeds will benefit the health clinic being
built by
Fr. Adolf Busobozi in his parish in Uganda.
Tickets are $10 general admission and will be
sold after all Masses (Sat. 4 p.m., Sun. 8 a.m. and 11 a.m.) in the church kitchen. They are also available

On Nov. 4th, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel will holding its 10th annual Packing Party for Operation Christmas Child. To our shoeboxes, you can add mild soap bars & face cloths, dolls, cars, stuffed toys, calculators, books/puzzles, tees, toys, sox, play jewelry, $9 to ship a box. On Nov. 11th, we bless them all (100?) and send to North Carolina for worldwide distribution to children in need. We'll let you know where they arrive!

Altar Server Ministry
Ever consider becoming an altar server? We would like to invite you to join this ministry.
This is a wonderful learning experience for our young members of the parish. They learn about their faith and take on responsibility. The assistance of young people as altar servers at Mass is a ministry of great importance at Holy Cross Church. They help facilitate a reverent flow to the liturgy.
If you are a member of our parish, and your child would like to become a server, we welcome youth starting in grade 3 and up, who have made their First Communion. This is an excellent way for Catholic girls and boys to appreciate our great ritual of the Eucharist in faith and fellowship.
Training sessions will be provided and announced at a later date. If you are interested, please contact Maureen at 413-783-6428 for further information.
