Dear Friends,
Happy November!
One of the highest callings of a servant leader is running for public office. Kudos to the men and women who are putting themselves in this path despite the public scrutiny, rhetoric, and attack ads. Kudos to the candidates who leave their egos and personal agendas at the door and run for office so that they can serve people and communities to affect change for the better. I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with some awesome, humble, and effective elected officials, in both parties, at local, state, and national levels during my tenure with Leadership Harrisburg Area.
Some of the common traits that I've observed in the most effective public servants include the following:
CREDIBILITY ~ they are honest and trustworthy with a history of being fair in their personal and business dealings.
COMPASSION ~ they care about the people they represent.
CONVICTION ~ they stand for a set of values and have purpose that is larger than themselves.
CIVILITY ~ they are able to articulate their concerns and disagreements about issues without attacking people or groups.
COURAGE ~ they have the strength and capacity to tackle tough issues; to stand up and fight the hard battles; and also to sit down and listen to other perspectives.
COMPROMISE ~ they are able to negotiate for the best possible outcomes even if they have to give a little.
Please take the time to research the candidates for yourself. Remember, it is possible to support your candidates without disparaging the others. Show them some compassion and good will as PEOPLE, even if they are not earning your vote. If you don't like the candidates or what they represent, consider a candidacy yourself. What value can YOU bring into our municipal government, state legislature, or United States congress?
If elected office is not for you, please take a look at the countless ways that you can serve your community by looking at the notices in this month's Community Caller. Volunteering, in itself, is an exercise in democracy. When you volunteer, you are voting about what kind of community you want to live in! Let's make it a great one!

Dedicated Helpline Specialists Needed!
Directly impact your community one connection at a time!
Specialists at CONTACT Helpline play a critical role in assisting callers with difficult situations, providing confidential, nonjudgmental, and emotional support on the helpline. We also provide referrals to callers that need assistance with basic needs (food/clothing/housing, etc.). With the holidays coming up, we are always prepared, 24/7, to take a call from someone that may just need someone to talk to.
You must be 18 years old to participate. Training and apprenticeships are required as well as a background check.
Our next set of training dates begin in January 2019.

Do you like people? Don't mind greeting visitors and answering questions? Are you available some daytime hours during the week? Friendly and reliable volunteers are needed to cover our front desk so that the Center can be open during the day! If you're interested, please fill out our volunteer form and select "receptionist". Volunteers Needed at the Food Pantry!
Since converting The Salvation Army food pantry to a choice shopping model, we have doubled the number of people we are serving each month including larger families and those with specific dietary needs. We are also providing more fresh foods vs. one-size-fits-all bags of canned goods and boxes. W
e currently need volunteers to assist clients with choosing their food items, packing bags, friendly conversation and more. If you can assist, click here to sign up. Right now, we're doing "choice days" once a week simply due to capacity. With more volunteers, we hope to expand that to meet demand. No better "team building" experience than friending and feeding! is looking for a Treasurer who would be willing to attend 7-8 Board meetings a year and spend about two or three hours per month overseeing our office accounting and financial statements. Made in Dauphin County: Artisan Exhibit Grand Opening
The 3rd and final exhibit of the "Made in Dauphin County" series will have its grand opening on Sunday, November 11 from
1-3 pm at the Historical Society of Dauphin County.
This exhibit features all things artisan that were created in Dauphin County. From Cowden & Wilcox stoneware to folk art, J. Augustus Beck paintings to Ned Smith prints, early needlework and print art to modern day paintings, there is something for everyone!
A highlight of the exhibit is the stoneware on display from the Dr. David Bronstein collection. You are almost guaranteed to see exquisite pieces you have never seen before.
Entrance to the grand opening is free.
Many of the collectors who loaned items will be on hand to answer questions and tell their stories. There will also be free wine, beer and light hors d'oeuvres.
There will also be a guided tour of the Mansion available at 1:00 pm for a reduced tour price of $5 per person.

Minimize Conflict. Maximize Attendance!
You plan, you prepare, you promote your event...then you learn that another big fundraiser is being held during your event! Eventsavvy is a tool created for nonprofit and community based organizations to use to minimize conflicting events in order to increase attendance for all.
