'Swing Under the Stars' helps
raise scholarship dollars
The Grossmont College Music Department will present "Swing Under the Stars," a fundraiser for student
scholarships and featuring the talents of faculty, students and alumni. Following the success of last year's "Salsa Under the Stars," "Swing" is set to begin with free swing dance lessons at 6:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, in the
Main Quad
.
The Jazz Katz Orchestra, a 14-piece ensemble featuring the sultry sounds of vocalist Whitney Shay and emulating the styles and sounds of the Big Band era, takes center stage from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Directed by Chaz Cabrera, the ensemble has been nominated for San Diego CityBeat's Best of San Diego Awards in the best blues band category.
Tickets are $20 for general admission; $10 for students and seniors with proceeds going to the Grossmont College Music Scholarship program. Tickets can be purchased online and can be printed, viewed on your cell phone or picked up at will-call in front of Bldg. 26, Room 220. Free parking in Lot 5.

ECHO chamber music series opens with Mozart sonatas at Cuyamaca
Cindy Wu on violin and Orion Weiss on piano open the 2018-19 ECHO Chamber Music Series 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at Cuyamaca College's
Samuel M. Ciccati Theatre with a selection of Mozart violin sonatas. Wu has enjoyed a versatile international career as a soloist, chamber musician and educator, and she has performed with the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan and the Taipei Symphony Orchestra, as well as with the Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra and the Russian State Symphony Orchestra, among others.
Weiss has performed with the Chicago Symphony, Boston Symphony, Toronto Symphony and New York Philharmonic, among others. A native of Lyndhurst, Ohio, the Juilliard alum made his Cleveland Orchestra debut in February of 1999. With less than 24 hours' notice, he stepped in the following month to replace Andre Watts for a performance with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. He was immediately invited for a return engagement.
ECHO - the East County Harmonics Organization -- is a chamber music series at Cuyamaca College showcasing some of the finest young musicians in the world.
Tickets are $15 for general admission; $10 for advance purchase and $5 for students and seniors. They can be purchased
online or by calling (619) 660-4288 for reservations. The first 20 students who attend are admitted for free.

Grossmont College 2018-19
theatre arts season opens
 Tom Stoppard's critically acclaimed masterpiece "Arcadia" opens the 2018-19 season of the Grossmont College Theatre Arts Department at the Stagehouse Theatre. The play is about an English country house in Derbyshire in the early 1800s and present day and explores the relationship between past and present, order and disorder, certainty and uncertainty. Performances will be held Oct. 4-6 and Oct. 11-13 at 7:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. performances Oct. 6 and 13.

For those wishing to purchase tickets in person, construction of a new performing and visual arts center is taking place adjacent to the Stagehouse Theatre, and that has resulted in the Theatre Arts Department office moving to a portable building at the southeast corner of Lot 1.

10th annual Lester Bangs Memorial Reading at Grossmont College
 The 10th annual Lester Bangs Memorial Reading, featuring
musician, author and former groupie Pamela Des Barres, takes place Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. at Grossmont College's Griffin Gate. Des Barres is the author of several memoirs, including "Take Another Little Piece of My Heart," "Let's Spend the Night Together: Backstage Secrets of Rock Muses and Supergroupies" and "I'm With the Band: Confessions of a Groupie."
Leslie Conway "Lester" Bangs attended Grossmont College from 1966 to 1968 and was known by many as "America's Greatest Rock Critic." He wrote for Rolling Stone, The Village Voice and Creem, and he was portrayed by actor Philip Seymour Hoffman in the 2000 Movie "Almost Famous."
Admission to the Fall Reading Series event is free and open to the public.

Cuyamaca College is hosting the East
 County Education Alliance's15th annual
Got Plans? Career and College Fair for all high school students and parents. High School students and parents can chat with admissions representatives from more than 90 public and private universities, community colleges, vocational schools, and the military.
The event is free and includes a variety of workshops including information on four-year universities, two-year colleges, assistance with college applications, financial aid, NCAA, SAT/ACT tests and more. Some sessions will be offered in Spanish and Arabic.
All high school students and their parents are welcome. Parking is free.

Free outdoor screening of Pixar's animated film, 'Coco'
 The 2017 Academy Award-winning Pixar animated film, Coco, inspired by the Mexican Day of the Dead holiday, will be shown free during Grossmont College's Outdoor Family Movie Night, 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, on the east lawn of the Learning & Technology Resource Center, Bldg. 70. The event is part of the college's celebration of Latinx Heritage Month and is open to the public.
