WCUCOM students Adam Purvis and Terra Cody celebrate receiving 60 new member applications on Oct. 30.

Academy Shines at William Carey - 60 Students Join
On Tuesday, students were encouraged to join the MAFP by two William Carey medical students who are in their OMS-4 year. MAFP student board member Adam Purvis and MAFP Ambassador Terra Cody shared with students how they have benefited from the opportunities offered by MAFP.  This inspiring talk resulted in 60 new students joining the MAFP.

MAFP staff members Kay-Lynn Meador and Kristen Kern visited the school in Hattiesburg. The MAFP Foundation furnished lunch for approximately 115 OMS-1 and OMS-2 medical students and gave a presentation about the Academy and Foundation.

Several WCUCOM staff were there to welcome the Academy and assist with the luncheon: Drs. Makayla Merrit, Rance McLain and Melissa Stephens, and staff members Kristen Graves and LaDonna Davidson.

Later in the afternoon, MAFP arranged for Foundation Vice President Dr. Jeremy Wells to meet with the student family medicine interest group to discuss what family medicine is like on a day-to-day basis. He answered questions about sports medicine, and encouraged them to attend the Spring Fling in April. Many thanks to the student chapter president Richard Burgan for his invitation and his follow-up with students after the two meetings to make sure they joined the MAFP.
We're Updating our Membership Directory,
So Check Your Info!
We want to make sure we have the correct information for you, from address to e-mail!

Members should have received an e-mail recently asking them to confirm or change their information for listing in our Membership Directory for 2019.   If you missed the e-mail, find it by searching for the sender claire@msafp.org.

The e-mail listed contact information and asked members to tell us their preferences (What address do you want us to publish? Do you want your e-mail address published or no?)  For example, last year, our MAFP President Dr. David Wheat chose to have his work address and web site listed, while keeping his e-mail address private. See his final listing below:

Members have until December 1 to respond to us, so we can update the directory. It will be published shortly after the new year. Since we share all member information with AAFP, you can also update your AAFP online account at https://www.aafp.org.
Wheat Represents MAFP at Tennessee Event
Dr. David Wheat, MAFP President, is in attendance this week at the Tennessee AFP Annual Meeting in Gatlinburg, TN. He visited the exhibit hall and the CME sessions, in addition to joining the other registrants dressing in a costume for Halloween on Wednesday. Our fighter pilot definitely aced it!

MSBML Posts Guidance on Opioid Prescribing
This week, the Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure (MSBML) regulations on opioid prescribing went into effect. New summary guidelines were posted online to help physicians follow the rules.

New requirements for checking patients in the Prescription Monitoring Program and with point of service urine testing are spelled out, and the guidelines for prescribing opioids and benzodiazepines are listed.

The information in both posted documents is only 4 pages, so print them out and keep them handy for any questions that may arise. If you have specific questions, you may e-mail the MSBML at mboard@msbml.ms.gov.

We encourage you to also use our Facebook Members Only group to share issues, experiences and best practices. Click on the image below to join.
