We commend East Palo Alto, Los Altos, Menlo Park, Mountain View, and Palo Alto for their excellent joint letter to FAA's Aircraft Noise Policy and Research Efforts; this is important input and an exemplary approach of cities working together to represent and give voice to citizens affected by federal airspace policies. Let your City Managers and Councils know this is appreciated!
YOUR advocacy supporting cities to advocate for reduced airplane noise makes a difference. The FAA’s notice is still accepting comments until April 14, has collected 2700 posts; please add your voice here, and thanks to all who have posted!
We are especially pleased that the Cities letter expresses what scientists and academicsanalyzed and have concluded for years.
FAA’s baseline assumptions and reliance on the Schultz Curve did not reflect the reality of noise issues on the ground. With the advent of NextGen and realignment of flight paths around the country in the last several years, complaints from residents outside the 65 dB DNL contour have exploded.
This report from Palo Alto resident Tom Rindfleisch with the history of complaints received by stop.jetnoise.net overlaid on Metroplex traffic from three international and five regional airports shows how the drop in complaints is directly correlated with the traffic reduction caused by COVID restrictions. Therefore, the way to reduce complaints around narrow corridor routes such as the major SFO and OAK flight paths is to disperse traffic so it isn't concentrated in one place.
It will be key for the FAA to make more progress getting stakeholders including airlines and airports to assist in noise reduction. We continue to follow up on GBAS, see the lettersto Congresswoman Anna Eshooand to SFO.
Thank you!
