News & Offerings from the Community Development Partnership
September 2018
A Word from Jay...
Sunday, September 16th was a glorious day for a 57.5 mile bike ride to benefit the work we do here at the Community Development Partnership.

Our team of eight riders trained throughout the summer and reached out to friends and family to support our efforts with a contribution to the CDP.

I'm incredibly proud that collectively, we raised over $25,000 - an impressive accomplishment given that this was the first time the CDP participated in the Last Gasp.

Held each fall for the past 27 years, The Last Gasp is a charity bike ride benefiting a host of worthy non-profits on Cape Cod.  It is a great example of our community coming together to enjoy the beauty of our region and support the important work of the non-profit sector.

Our participation was also a great example of CDP supporters, Board Members, staff and spouses coming together to raise important funds for the organization.
And for me, participating in the Last Gasp was a great opportunity to get back into bike riding and drop a few pounds riding up and down the hills of Truro!  Our goal for next year is to recruit more riders and raise more funds.  How about joining us?

As always,

Supporting Local Businesses
When a little expertise is all you need...

"But no one is an expert at everything. That's why this program is so essential."

Shayna Ferullo, Snowy Owl Coffee Roasters

Over the years, the CDP has helped launch and strengthen over 2200 businesses on the Lower Cape. We are always amazed at the passion, skill, and determination that people bring to starting (or growing) their own businesses.

Still, no matter how impressive a local business owner's capabilities may be, there are times when outside expertise can make a big difference. That's where our mini-grants for professional services come in.

Shayna Ferullo and Manuel Ainzuain, founders of Snowy Owl Coffee Roasters in Brewster, are known for their skill at sourcing, roasting, brewing, and serving up superb coffee. But their inventory systems weren't working for them.

Providing Safe, Stable & Affordable Housing
How affordable housing paves the way to small business success...

"There's so much to think about in starting a business...But one of the most important things was that I didn't have to worry about our housing situation.
Nate Lewis, Nate's Landscaping

Nate Lewis is doing what he loves-working outdoors, tending plants and setting stone pathways and walls. He's also raising a family in Ea stham. It's the life he envisi oned, though getting started wasn't easy. No matter, he says. Hard work suits him.

Two years ago, Nate launched his own small business, Nate's Landscaping. But he would not have found the path to success, Nate says, without the stability that came from having an affordable apartment.

Nate's story shows just how closely linked small business development and affordable housing are here on the Lower Cape.

Support Spotlight
The CDP and Polhemus Savery DaSilva find a shared mission

"We see housing affordability as a key concern for people and we want to help."
            Aaron Polhemus, Polhemus Savery DaSilva

Since 2010, Polhemus Savery DaSilva, the Cape Cod-based architectural design and construction firm, has given back to the community through its PSD Fund for Working Families.  The CDP has been a recipient of their support as they share an overarching mission of addressing issues that concern working families on Cape Cod.

"The PSD Fund for Working Families was started as a means to assist those who face challenges living and working on the Cape," says Aaron Polhemus, the company's President & CEO. "One of the ways our vision and the CDP's mission align is that we see housing affordability as a key concern and we want to help."
