Newsletter for Parents and Friends of
Beaumont School

November 4 - 10, 2018
Dear Parents and Friends,

With the start of November, comes the beginning of the holiday season. At Beaumont, that also signals an even greater calling to our mission of bringing community, charity, and social justice to our world. One organization in particular at Beaumont and throughout the Diocese of Cleveland, Catholic Schools for Peace and Justice (CSPJ), does an incredible job of helping bring that mission to life.

Rooted in Catholic Social Teaching, CSPJ students and leaders meet regularly to share ideas and resources, plan sponsored events, and invite each other’s schools to participate and collaborate on projects. Already this year, students have participated in a Liturgy, March and Rally for Life at Public Square.

Led by our students and faculty moderators, Mr. Steward and Mrs. Riley, CSPJ is particularly impactful during the holiday season. Just this week they began efforts to help the less fortunate. Our Thanksgiving Food Drive has begun its goal of providing food to make a full Thanksgiving meal for one family in each homeroom. All baskets will be collected the week of Monday, November 13. Each homeroom has been given a list of non-perishable items to bring in, while faculty and staff provide the turkeys to complete the meal.  Furthermore, members of CSPJ will be making sleeping mats for homeless people in the city of Cleveland. The mats are made from plastic grocery bags. Nine hundred bags are needed for one adult-sized mat. To that effort, Beaumont is happy to take any plastic grocery bags off your hands that are taking up space in your kitchen. If you would like to donate your unused bags, please have your daughter(s) bring them to classroom A122 when they arrive at school in the morning. Any student not in CSPJ that would like to participate in making the mats is welcome to help and will recieve service hours. Thank you for all your efforts in helping us realize our school’s mission.

Bishop’s Day Off

The rumors are true! A favorite tradition of students, it is common for a new bishop to grant a day off during his first visit to a school. This year, the bishop left student’s a little disappointed when his visit came and went without gifting them the customary day off. Consequently, in a plucky effort, a very courageous student emailed Bishop Perez to thank him for a wonderful visit and to ask if something may have slipped his mind while he was here. Not long after, I received and email from him asking if I would allow a special day off on his behalf. Subsequently, your families may enjoy a slightly extended Thanksgiving weekend as there will be no school, Monday, November 26.

Mission Integration

The escalating level of intolerance in our society invites us to pause to pray for peace and harmony in our nation. The violence perpetrated against the Jewish community in Pittsburgh focuses attention on the escalation of hate crimes and anti-Semitism in the US. Violence directed at racial, religious, ethnic and minority groups has become commonplace. We cannot remain passive in the face of the heightening levels of prejudice and division. We need to pray but also to act, in our daily lives, to “build community wherever we go” as St. Angela urges us to do. We need to reach out to support marginalized people and to challenge any political process, of whatever persuasion, which seeks to create division. To the Jewish community of The Tree of Life Synagogue we say “Shalom”.

Campus Ministry News

Today we celebrate the feast of All Saints , honoring those holy men and women who have gone before us leaving examples of courage and goodness. We look to St. Angela and St. Ursula as patrons and guides to help us continue that path of holiness! Our day began with a Mass in their honor and Father Dave Woost reminded us of our own call to witness in our lives the mercies of God.

Service Opportunity
Students looking to acquire service hours can stop by Mr. Steward’s classroom after school to help with the Sleeping Mat project for the homeless. Stay as long as you like, and earn service time while helping the poor!
