Join Us for Worship This Sunday!
Sunday, November 4 at 9 and 11 a.m.

Worship Leader:
Rev. Susan Milnor, Interim Senior Minister

Worship Associate: Judy Brook

"Time of Reckoning"
This month's Soul Matters theme of Memory is poignantly relevant to the moment. If ever we were called to remember, it is now. And, yes, one thing we must remember is to live by love. But what does that mean in such a time as this? To turn away from the fear that gives power to authoritarianism requires us to remember, in love, the nameless as well as the named.

Letter of Support to Local Synagogues
Zoe Hart

As part of our First UU response to the recent shootings at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, we have written a letter to the three Burlington area synagogues expressing our support and solidarity. The letter will be available in the Parlors after both services this Sunday, November 4. Anyone who wishes to is invited to add their signature to the letter.

Daylight Saving Time Reminder

Remember to set your clocks back one hour on Saturday night! Daylight saving time ends at
2 a.m. this  Sunday, November 4 .
Family Chapel Starting This Sunday
Join us in the inspiration of Beloved Community at www.uusociety.org Erika Reif, Family Ministry Assistant

As part of our search for ways to make faith formation a family affair, Family Ministry is trying something new this year: Starting this Sunday, November 4, on the first  Sunday   of each month, parents, teachers, and anyone else who would like to, are invited to join the children in the Community Room for Family Chapel.

This alternative start to  Sunday  worship, led initially by Andrea Spencer-Linzie, will last about 15 minutes, after which parents will head up to the sanctuary to join the larger worship service, and kids will begin their classes or other scheduled activities. Please note that on these mornings there will not be a "Reflections for All Ages" in the sanctuary.

#WontBeErased March with Pride Center

Join the Pride Center for  #WontBeErased: March Against Hate this Sunday, November 4. Marchers will gather at 12:30 p.m. on the FUUSB lawn and then march to City Hall Park for a rally. Please click here more details on the event or visit Pride Center of Vermont on Facebook.

Seeking Playful Spirits!
Erika Reif, Family Ministry Assistant

Spirit Play Teacher Training: Sunday, November 11 , 10-11 a.m.
in the Barnum Room

As you may know, Spirit Play is the Montessori-based approach to faith formation that we use for preschool through 5th grade children during the  9:00
service, and for preschool through 3rd grade during the
11:00 service.

If you are looking for a way to serve our congregation and deepen your connection, consider becoming a Spirit Play Storyteller or Doorkeeper!

Spirit Play teachers do not need to be parents of young children! Not sure you have what it takes? Come to the training, ask questions, and see if it would work for you!
RSVP here by November 7. Childcare and light breakfast provided.

Storytelling Help Needed
We are looking for volunteers, children, youth and adults, to help tell our dramatic story "Stone Soup" for the
November 18 worship services at  9 and 11 a.m. If you're interested in helping out, talk with Andrea Spencer-Linzie, Developmental Director of Family Ministry,  on Sunday during coffee hour in the Community Room, or contact her at  [email protected].

Changes Coming for JUMP Bags
Since before I arrived in Vermont over 25 years ago, First UU has been collecting Thanksgiving grocery bags for the Joint Urban Ministry Project (JUMP).  Over that time we have filled over 3,000 bags with Cheerios, rice, pasta, beans, and pasta sauce that was distributed to needy families and individuals from JUMP's drop-in center at First Congregational Church. Later, we added toiletries and personal care items to the mix. Your generosity has been appreciated by the over 30,000 clients JUMP has served over that time.

Times have changed, JUMP's client mix has changed, JUMP's volunteer mix has changed. And so, JUMP is asking you to change as well. We find that fewer of our clients desire the staples that many of us relate to from childhood. Many of JUMP's clients desire food and supplies from specialized markets such as Mawhui African Market, Thai Phat Market, Himalayan Food Market, and Dot's Market. Many of our clients prefer a $10 gift card from Hannaford or Price Chopper that allows them the dignity of purchasing what they need (no tobacco or alcohol).

And JUMP volunteers know the difficulty of maintaining the heavy, bulky, food items on the upstairs storage area at First Congo. Many of our congregants have helped haul those items over to First Congo, and know what I am talking about. In addition, mice just love JUMP's storage situation!

So, after much consideration and discussion, JUMP's Board has decided to cease supplying food items to clients. We know we can better serve those clients by providing what they decide they need, not us.

You will hear more about this at the  November 11
services, at which time JUMP bags will be distributed, but what First UU folks can do is: First, continue to bring toilet tissue on a year round basis; second, fill your JUMP bag this year with toiletry items that are always in demand; third, diapers (all sizes) are one of the most requested items that JUMP provides.

JUMP bags will be collected on  Sunday, November 18.  Toiletry lists will also be available on the bulletin board by the office. And, if you cannot make the  November 18 service, you may drop off your bag any time, even after  November 18.

JUMP is so thankful for First UU's material and financial support over the years, and will continue to be thankful for First UU members' ability to move into this new era with JUMP.

Thank you,
Woody Fulton, Treasurer, JUMP
