ALTERNATIVE GIFT FAIR

ALTERNATIVE GIFT FAIR VOLUNTEER SIGNUP
BEGINS FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28 AT 6:00 PM!

As you may recall, the Alternative Gift Fair is a holiday gift fair hosted at Evergreen Lutheran Church and sponsored by UMCE and six other local congregations.  Approximately 50 local, national and international nonprofits sell art, crafts, jewelry, clothes, cards and other items from around the world to support their projects around the world that help those in need.  The AGF motto is "Buy Once.  Gift Twice." When you buy a Christmas gift at the fair, it is a gift to your recipients as well as those in need served by the nonprofit vendors at the Fair. THIS YEAR, THE FAIR WILL BE SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 10 AND 11.

Thank you VERY much for those of you who have worked at the AGF in the past! We are again recruiting and coordinating volunteers from UMCE. Once again this year, we are providing a central sign up website using SignupGenius.  This way, at one time, you can see all the open volunteer opportunities and time slots.  As in the past, you may volunteer for Set-Up, Clean-Up, Cashier, Cashier Support, Volunteer Check-In, Van Driver, Parking Lot Attendant, Safety Assistant (medical person) and more! We need your help to make the Fair a success again this year!! THE SOONER YOU SIGN UP, THE MORE CHOICE IN JOBS YOU WILL HAVE!

Questions? Please call, email or visit Bill Graf at (303) 246-8330 and  [email protected].  It is easy to sign up online yourself.

To sign up online:
  1. Go to the AGF website http://www.gifttwice.org/  , then click on the "Volunteer" tab on the menu bar at the top, which will take you to a link to the SignupGenius website for the AGF.
  2. Review the volunteer jobs, the dates and time slots and then click the "Sign Up" button for job or jobs you select.  This will result in a check mark (√).  Repeat this for each job for which you wish to volunteer.
  3. When you have clicked all the jobs you want to volunteer for, please click the green "Submit and Sign Up" button at the bottom of the page.  You do not need to set up a SignupGenius account to volunteer at the AGF.
  4. You will be taken to a place to enter information about yourself.  Please:
    1. Enter your name, email, phone number and any other required information; and
    2. Click to show your affiliation with the United Methodist Church of Evergreen.
    3. Do not sign up as a group using just one person's name.  We need the info for each separate volunteer so we can reach him/her if there are changes.
  5. Click "Sign Up Now!" to complete the sign up process.
  6. Click "Back to Sign Up" and  repeat the first two steps to be sure you are shown for the jobs you wanted
  7. Close out SignUpGenius.
  8. You should receive an email confirming the jobs you are signed up for.

CONDOLENCES

MATTHEW STUART SCHEEL
Apr 4, 1968 - Sep 19, 2018 (Age 50)
Matthew is the son of Vernon and Joyce Scheel of Conifer, CO. Matthew's mother Joyce is a beloved staff member at UMCE and an integral part our church family. Matthew passed away unexpectedly on the evening of September 19 from a cerebral aneurism. His passing has come as a shock to his family and friends. Matthew was an architectural designer with his own firm, BMS Architectural Design Services, and he was a volunteer fire fighter and emergency medical technician. He was beloved by everyone who knew him. He was laid to rest on Tuesday, September 25 at Evergreen Memorial Park with the North Fork Fire Department providing full honors. He was eulogized by family, friends and coworkers.  Please continue to pray for the Scheel family during this time of grief. Condolences may be sent to Vernon and Joyce Scheel at the address below.

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES & MINISTRY NEEDS

GIVING OF TIME AND SERVICE

In the coming weeks, we will be encouraged to complete a "Giving of Time and Service" sheet as we look ahead to who will be available to make our ministries continue, big and small. Thank you, ahead of time, for the various ways you will be offering to assist.

LITURGISTS, USHERS AND GREETERS NEEDED

Liturgists wanted for 10:30 services -  If you'd be willing to serve occasionally as a liturgist at the 10:30 service, please let JoAnn Vogt know ( [email protected] ).  (And, in the spirit of inclusivity and equal opportunity:  All but one of our current liturgists are women, so we'd be especially happy to see some men and some young people volunteer.)

Ushers and greeters are also needed for both the 8:30 and 10:30 services. Please let JoAnn Dunn [email protected] or the church office [email protected] know if you are interested in serving in this way. Also, there will be an usher/greeter training on Sunday, November 4th at 11:30 for current and new usher/greeters.

SOCIAL MEDIA TASK FORCE
We Need Your Help!

UMCE's Church Council has commissioned a Social Media Task Force to examine and make concrete recommendations on how we may improve  (1) our outreach to the foothills community to tell them about our great church family, and  (2) our "inreach" to better communicate and connect with our past, present and future church family.

This may take the form of updating our UMCE website and online social media presence (Facebook, etc.), streaming or posting online sermons or parts of Sunday and other special services, establishing a dedicated audio and video broadcast to Fellowship Hall to allow for overflow at highly attended services (such as funerals) and other uses such as family Movie Night.

If you have experience or knowledge in design, marketing or technical  areas needed for this task force and would like to be part of its work, please contact Bill Graf by phone 303-246-8330 or email [email protected] .

FALL KIDS' PROGRAMS

Our Sunday morning program theme this year is All Together In the Ark. Our weekly Bible Study will have a running theme of valuing our individual talents and abilities and seeing ourselves and each other the way God sees us: as unique, valuable, and capable of great things!  At 9:30AM Action Pack will take a service-oriented approach to Bible Study and will focus on living our God's Word. At 10:30AM our Sunday School will take a more traditional study-approach to our theme. Each week two different lessons will be presented in the two different hours. That way EverKids can attend at 9:30 and 10:30 without experiencing a repeated lesson. We are still looking for Sunday morning teachers! If you are able to donate time in this way, please either contact Sarah Sailor or Pastor Deb.

Our Wednesday Feed My Sheep program is a child-oriented community mission. At 4PM every Wednesday, we will pray together and prepare a simple meal for members of the congregation and community. Dinner is served at 5PM, and the EverKids will eat with the church family. At 5:30PM, Pastor Deb will lead the adults in a discussion group upstairs, and the EverKids will have a devotional and game time downstairs. The program will end at 6PM.

MINISTRY JOTTINGS BY PASTOR DEB

Ministry Jottings:
God Loves Your Quirks

"I praise you, God, because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well."       - Psalm 139:14

Can you balance a spoon on the end of your nose? Or hum the entire William Tell Overture from start to finish? Or maybe you know the entire play-by-play of baseball's famous "Who's on first" act. Everyone has their own special talents, their own unique ways, their own . . . quirks. They are all part of God's gifts to you - yes, even the quirkiest quirks - and they're just one more thing that God loves about you.

God loves you simply because you are . . . well . . . you. God loves your imperfections, your quirkiness, your creativity. God loves the way you laugh, the way you work, the way you give.

Because you are fearfully and wonderfully made . . . because you are you . . . because you are our Lord's.

In Christ's grace,
Pastor Deb

Wednesday Women's Bible Study is studying the book "Numbers: Learning Contentment in a Culture of More" by Melissa Spoelstra. This book and DVD study focuses on how the Israelites wandered through the wilderness grumbling, and how we can be content and stay authentic about the difficulties of life, and change our perspective from a posture of fear to a posture of faith. Please contact Jeanne Ambrosier with any questions at (303) 674-6377.

Sundays, October 7, 14 and 21: 9:30-10:15
Effective Confrontation and Conflict Resolution, Parts 2, 3 & 4
Facilitator: Dr. Lorna Idol
We will continue to explore research-proven methods for managing conflict and confrontation skillfully throughout the communication and problem-solving process. The presence of conflict is in itself neither good nor bad; it simply exists and should be expected. "True" conflict involves differences of beliefs, facts, values or strategies. The first rule of confrontation is: Do not confront another person if you do not intend to increase your involvement with him or her. We will explore how to know when to confront and how to go about doing so in an effective and healthy way. We learned two specific confrontation skills in Spring 2018 and will learn six more skills over these three sessions. We will be utilizing adult education materials from one of Lorna's published professional development programs: Collaboration in the Schools: Communicating, Interacting and Problem Solving.
