All Saints Sunday, November 4th
But lo! there breaks a yet more glorious day;
The saints triumphant rise in bright array;
The King of glory passes on His way.
Alleluia, Alleluia!
William W. How, 1864
from the hymn,
For All the Saints

All Saints Sunday, November 4th, is a special time in the church year to remember those we have loved who have become a part of the "church triumphant." It is an occasion to reflect on the shining promise of Christ's everlasting life against the background of nearing winter darkness.
This year the LOTI Church Choir and guest instrumentalists will perform Gabriel Fauré's
Requiem, Op. 48. Fauré began work on his
Requiem in 1887. This was two years after the death of his mother and months after the death of his father. There is a wonderful calm and consolation to this piece. This was not a complete liturgical Requiem. Fauré made a personal selection of texts, laying emphasis on the idea of rest and peace instead of the traditional focus on the day of judgment. This original version was first performed for a funeral in the church of Madeleine where Fauré served as choirmaster, and continued to be used in this abbreviated form for another decade. Five years later, however, he added two final movements for grander occasions.
As a part of this annual celebration, the Endowment Fund is inviting the friends and members of Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church to honor and memorialize the "living saints" and "the saints in light" with a gift to the Endowment Fund. Those whose names are memorialized with a financial gift will be included on the Sunday morning worship bulletin for All Saints, and with a flower in a special floral arrangement.
Consider the places that have been dear to you, and the people who have made a special mark on you, and honor their memory with your gift.

Cut A Rug Fundraiser Success The September 30th fundraiser for the new sanctuary carpeting was a great success! We raised nearly $11,000 in donations for the project. We are grateful to all those who donated time, prizes and services. Special thanks to Michelle McCreery, her sister Georgeann, and Susanne Haas for their work on the fundraiser. And thank you as well to the Starry Night Quartet for their wonderful music.

Blessing of the
Animals
Sunday School children brought their favorite stuffed animals to church on
Sunday, October 7
th. In the tradition of St. Francis of Assisi, who blessed the animals and all creation, the favorite furry friends were blessed by Pastor Haug at the end of the worship service. Several live animals were blessed as well, including a sweet little hedgehog named Oreo.

Abide With Me
by Elizabeth Strout, author of Olive Kitterage.
After the tragic death of his young wife, Reverend
Caskey, a New England minister, struggles to hold
together his own life, his family, and his town,
while dealing with his personal anger, grief,
and loss of faith. In prose incandescent and artful,
Elizabeth Strout draws readers into the details of ordinary
life in a way that makes it extraordinary. All is considered-life, love, God, and community-within these pages, and all is made new by this writer's boundless compassion and graceful prose.

St Martin's Fest
St. Martin of Tours was known for his generosity to the poor. One cold winter night, when he was still a Roman soldier, he cut his cloak two to share it with a beggar at the city gate. In honor of St. Martin and his
legacy, our St. Martin's Fest dinner will conclude the
winter clothes drive for PPL Project Pride for Living.
Please mark your calendars for this special Oktoberfest style, German festival on
Saturday, November 10, 5:00 - 7:30 pm
in the Fellowship Hall. This year the adults, as well as the children, will be invited to participate in the St. Martin's parade of lanterns and follow St. Martin riding his horse. Music will be provided by accordionist Mark Stillman.
Don Holzschuh will serve Stuffed Pork Loin, spätzle, green beans, curried red cabbage and apple cake.
Cost is $15 per person / $30 per family.
The 2018 St. Martin's Fest Dinner is sponsored by the local Thrivent Action Team.

Remembrance Sunday

At the
11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the guns fell silent on the Western Front, to bring to an end the First World War. Our nation has recalled that moment on this day through the decades. And now 100 years later, we remember lives sacrificed in the service of our country, and those traumatized and injured in battle.
This year, the 100th anniversary actually takes place on a Sunday morning.
Remembrance Sunday is one of the liturgical services for honoring veterans. It allows for a brief time of music, silence, wreath laying and a call to remember the fallen. Our service will feature the music of trumpeter Jonathan Brandt.
Across the US, church bells will ring on November 11, 11:00 am. Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church will participate in a two minutes pealing of the bell as well.

Working Speaker Series
Working is the theme of an ongoing speaker series in which people talk about what they do all day and how they feel about what they do. Many people within our congregation are engaged in fascinating work, and this series gives us an opportunity to learn more about what they do.
Want to learn something about 3D printing technology? Then come to the next Working session on Sunday, November 18th to hear from new LOTI member, Ben Guengerich. (He might even bring a 3D printer with him!) Ben is the Anderson Student Innovation Labs Manager at the U of M. Trained as a mechanical engineer, Ben has spent his career working for university "makerspaces". The U of M's Anderson Student Innovation Labs give students a place to learn technical skills outside of the classroom and the means to work on their projects, whether they're gifts for friends or potentially life changing technology innovations.
Ben's talk will take place after a brief coffee break following the Sunday morning service. Those who are interested will be invited to take their coffee/tea into the Christy Room for about 45 minutes. The first 15-20 minutes will be an informal talk by Ben, leaving the time remaining for questions from those in attendance.
If you are interested in sharing your Working story, please contact jannahaug@yahoo.com
