FALL BACK!  Daylight Saving Time ENDS
Saturday night/Sunday morning, Nov.3/4.
Don't forget to set you clocks back!

A Message from Our Pastor
Dear St. Luke Saints,

November is a wonderful month of the year! We have nice cool temperatures, we experience the beauty of the leaves changing, and we anticipate the good food and all the traditions of Thanksgiving. This year November has a few other important dates.
Nov. 6 is Election Day in Shelby County, and your vote is needed. We in the faith community have an obligation to support policies that reflect our faith. Be sure to make casting your vote a priority on Tuesday, Nov. 6.
On Sunday, November 11 we will have a special Consecration Sunday Celebration at St. Luke. Our guest preacher will be Ruthie Lentz. Ruthie is a member of Grace St. Luke Episcopal Church and a leader of the More Than A Meal ministry. I am very excited to welcome Ruthie to St. Luke as a part of our fall stewardship program. Following the worship service, we are all invited to a join in a meal together in the CFC.
The next occasion is a really big one for my family. On Saturday, November 17, Lisa and I will celebrate the wedding of our daughter, Sophia Bahlinger to Tyler Reeves. The wedding ceremony will be at 5:30 pm in the Sanctuary.  The Reverends Tim and Sharon Taylor will celebrate the service. Pastors Tim and Sharon are Sophia's godparents. All of the St. Luke community is invited to attend the wedding ceremony. Because of space limitations in the CFC, the wedding reception will be limited to a guest list. Thank you for your understanding, we are so grateful for all of your prayers and support you have shown our family throughout our years at St. Luke.
In closing, it is important that we reflect on the violence and the rise of hate crimes in our country. What a national tragedy it is, when worshipers are murdered in a Jewish synagogue. Fear is sown when political opponents are threatened with bombs and refugees are considered criminals or worse. Now is a time for people of faith to speak and act. God loves all people, God cares for the refugee; God is love. We must remain true to who we are as baptized people of God. We are agents of peace, inclusivity, and welcome. We will not be turned against our neighbor, instead we will love and serve our neighbor. We are part of the household of God, we can disagree and still be in community. We are defenders and stewards of all that God has made. Join me in daily prayer for healing in our nation, and humility in our nation's leaders.

Worship Ministry

November we take time to give thanks and praise for all our blessings and reflect on how we can share them with others as Christ teaches us.   To borrow a favorite St. Luke quote, "We are truly blessed."   We can bless others! You are invited to pray on how you can make a difference by what you do or say to someone.  It doesn't have to be monumental...sometimes the smallest kindness can mean the world to someone and brighten their life.  Let your light shine on others!

  Upcoming Worship Events
November 4     is All Saints Day and we will honor those who have gone                           before us.  We invite you to light a candle to honor your                             loved ones.
November 11    is Consecration Sunday.  We pledge a portion of our                                   treasure to God to support the ministry of his                                             church.  We'll have a special speaker and dinner that day.
November 17   is a very special day as Sophia and Tyler marry.  Many of                           us have watched Sophia Bahlinger grow from a cute,                                 l ittle girl into a beautiful young woman.
Many blessings to the entire family on this very special
                         life event!
November 18    Paul White will be preaching today
  November 22   Happy Thanksgiving!
November 25    Feast of Christ the King,  Paul White, preaching

A Message From Our Council President
Greetings Fellow St. Luke Saints,

The end of the year is always a busy and exciting time at St. Luke. As I write this our Family Promise guests have just settled in and are busy making St. Luke their home for the week. It is heartening to see their smiling faces, knowing that St. Luke is a caring congregation committed to helping all of God's people in all situations.

St. Luke supports Family Promise not only as a host church but as a financial donor to the program as well. We are a benevolent congregation, committed to using 10% of the annual offerings/income for social programs throughout the world. From More Than A Meal and Church Health right here in Memphis, to missionary support around the world. These types of ministries, as well as supporting our members and taking care of our church home require your support. In addition to volunteering, St. Luke counts on the generous financial resources from our members. The theme of this year's Stewardship campaign is STEP-UP.  As Pastor told us in Sunday's sermon (yes Cliff, I listened!), determine where your current offering is in terms of percentage of your income, and then make it your goal to STEP-UP to that next level on your way to tithing. Giving back to God out of the abundance that He has first given us is a spiritual exercise that gives you so much more in return. The first fruits were always designed by God to be returned to Him, having faith that He will always provide for our daily needs.

The Stewardship campaign will culminate in a celebration of God's great resources at the Consecration Luncheon November 11 in the CFC immediately following the 10:00 am service. The Stewardship Committee has a great guest speaker for the sermon that day and a very special, unique lunch planned. Please make plans to attend and break bread with your fellow Saints.

Our annual Thanksgiving basket drive is in full swing. All Saints giving a little so everyone has something to celebrate Thanksgiving is one of our oldest St. Luke traditions. Please check the signs around the church for the needed items and drop them off in the CFC by November 11.

Please make plans to attend the semiannual congregational meeting set for December 9 immediately following service. We will be electing several Council members and ratifying the 2019 budget. Your attendance is vital to provide for the function and vitality of St. Luke.

Tuesday Ladies' Bible Study

P salm 23: The Shepherd With Me

Most of us are familiar with Psalm 23 and each of us have our  own interpretation of these words.  Beginning Tuesday, September 11th at 10am a new Bible study is beginning in room #135 that will focus on these verses and explore a new way to look at them.  Psalm 23: The Shepherd With Me, written by Jennifer Rothschild, is a seven-session video-based Bible study, where you will:

  • Experience the depths of God's care for you tucked in the psalm you've always loved.
  • Discover how to let your guard down and let God's presence be your confidence.
  • Learn that your vulnerability is not a liability because your Shepherd made you to need Him.

Again this year, we will be focusing on families that have graduated from our Family Promise ministry, Tonie Robinson/ Peace Lutheran and of course our Outreach families.  We are asking for all the Sunday School classes to participate in this worthwhile project .   The Confirmands will be helping with the packing of the bags on Wednesday evening, November 14th.  Delivery will be on Saturday, November 17th or Sunday, November 18th .   Each Sunday school student will receive a grocery bag.  We ask that you bring the bag back to your Sunday school teacher along with the designated food items assigned to your class .   We will be collecting for the baskets the following Sundays: October 28 th , November 4th, and November 11th.   Again we are asking the Adult Sunday School classes to participate with a specific item.  There will be a sign up on the Communication card in the bulletin for turkeys.

More than a Meal ...
An Opportunity to Serve

More Than A Meal provides a hot meal and, in addition, provides the dignity of table service, fellowship, and a break from the  invisibility
that  many of the guests live.

St. Luke Saints led by Dave and Susie Carlson are responsible for the afternoon meal at Grace St. Luke Episcopal Church the third Sundays. [  December (16th) this year.]

Vitalant (LifeBlood) will be at St. Luke on November 25th from 9:00am - 12:00pm in a blood mobile in the parking lot of St Luke.

Lifeblood has merged with Blood Systems Inc. and re-branded themselves as Vitalant; however, they are still a  non-profit volunteer blood center, dedicated to meeting the needs of our community. Every 2 seconds someone needs blood and most people will need blood at some point in their lifetime; only volunteers can meet these needs!

The donation process only takes about 1 hour and takes place entirely at St. Luke. Each donation of whole blood can help as many as 3 recipients - all of them our neighbors.

I strongly encourage you to sign up in advance at  clublifeblood.us or using the signup sheet that will be posted outside the office; having a schedule will help organize and thus speed the process along. In addition, you can complete your health questionnaire in advance at  clublifeblood.us the day of the drive.

Don't forget you earn points with every donation that can be redeemed at   clublifeblood.us; rewards include t-shirts, movie passes, and gift cards.

Please contact Jon Klein ( [email protected], 901-268-5478), the St. Luke Vitalant Coordinator, with any questions.

Stewardship @ St. Luke

STEP-UP to Consecration Sunday
Sunday, November 11th is our congregation's Consecration Sunday. I urge you to plan now to attend the two important events: Sunday morning worship to include a sermon from a very special guest and the Celebration Luncheon immediately following worship that same day.  We believe that you have sufficient concern for your spiritual growth and the mission and ministries of our congregation to attend these two special events.

STEP UP
Rather than focusing on the need of the church to receive, our theme of Step-Up concentrates on the need of the giver to give for his or her own spiritual development.  This stair step illustration shows the current giving levels of giving at St. Luke.  Our Church Administrator Patti Calvert created this chart as she is the only individual who has access to the confidential information to create it.  As you review this chart, please prayerfully consider how you might STEP-UP, one step in your giving level in 2019.

T-2 Ministry Team Report

T-2 Ministry Team - November 2018
Our Team presented the results of the Congregational Survey on Sunday, October 14 th following service. If you were unable to attend the meeting, here's the condensed report:
  • Surveys were distributed in church just prior to the end of service on the following Sundays: 6/17, 6/24, 7/1, 7/8
  • Sixty-five surveys were completed, turned in and mailed on Monday, 7/9
  • 2/3 of the surveys were completed by females; 1/3 by males
  • Results were all anonymous, however we know that: 57 were active attenders; 4 were Council members; 3 visitors; and 1 Staff, not Pastor
  • The age breakdown of surveys: (3) were under age 18; (1) ages 18-24; (3) ages 25-34; (9) ages 35-44; (8) ages 45-54; (22) ages 55-64; (11) ages 65-74; (8) ages 75+
  • 33.8% of respondents gave the strongest ratings possible for how they perceive God's active presence in the congregation (transformation is possible when at least 20% of participants experience God as present and active)
  • Respondents rated "sense of mission" at 4.2/5.0 scale; this scale score indicates the clarity of God's call for St. Luke with an ideal score near 4.5
  • Our "Relationships Score" was 69% which indicates how many respondents describe a healthy social climate (harmony or respectful disagreements); ideally this number will be over 80% but that is not always realistic
  • Our "Leadership Score" was 35% which indicates how many respondents describe church leadership, both lay and rostered, as "inspiring"; ideally this number will be over 50%. Our respondents described St. Luke's leadership with the following options:
    • 11/65 indicated "Take Charge"
    • 22/65 indicated "Inspires People to Action"
    • 19/65 indicated "Acts on Goals Others Set"
    • 3/65 indicated "People Start Most Things"
    • 9/65 indicated "Not Sure"
If you would like to view the full survey results, they are available on our website through the Member Login at the top-right of the webpage. If you would like to learn how you can become more involved in the T-2 process, please reach out to myself or one of the other Team members: Sandi Oakley, Sue Malone, Cathy Dafoe, Burk Renner or Pastor Cliff.

This Week at St. Luke - 28 Oct
The Saints Come Marching In!  Next Sunday (Nov. 4) is All Saints, so please think about those loved ones you'd like to remember by lighting a candle for, during worship.

Our young Saints were given their Bibles Sunday:  Andrew Edmonds, Jackson Feuerborn, Colin Mattison, and Olivia Smith-Olsen.  Also awarded a bible was third grader Rachael Lorenz. Many blessings to these young folks!

Don't forget to come to church, Saturday morning November 3, for a work day beginning at 7:30.  All help, big or small, will be appreciated!

Family Promise started last Sunday.  If you can fill the few spots left, please call Jim Allay.
Join the choir in Cantata rehearsals, starting this Wednesday evening Oct. 31, at 7pm.

Cliff Notes:  Sunday was Reformation's 501st anniversary.  The gospel lesson was John
8:31-36. Martin Luther posted 95 protests against the church and much of what he was protesting had to do with money.  He declared that we don't need to purchase our way to heaven. Luther took great risks, to the point that there was a bounty on his head.  So: we look into the relationship between God and money. Money is power. It can corrupt. Jesus preached many times about money. We must decide our relationship with God and then our relationship with money.  We are in charge of our money, not the other way around. Here are four tools to consider when managing money:
  1. St. Paul says put aside a portion of your money, as you prosper.
  2. Give regularly.  Put aside your money at the first of the month, as "first fruits."
  3. Give proportionally:  decide on a percentage of your income, as you are able.
  4. Grow in generosity: give in return for God's grace.

November is Stewardship month, here at St. Luke and it's a good time to look at what we are grateful for and how to express that gratitude.  Benedictine monk David Steindl-Rast says, "In daily life, we must see that it is not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratefulness makes us happy."  When you consider his words, you realize how true that really is. We were created by a divine God, to be like Him and in order to be what we were created for, we first recognize how valuable the gift of life is.  To then follow His commandment: love others, serve others, show mercy to others, is then "doing" your gratitude. We see this so often within our church family and outside the walls of St. Luke, showing our community here and abroad how grateful we are for all our gifts and passing this gratitude on to others.  Way to go, Saints!   Please consider how much more we can do for others by stepping up our giving. "One small step for man... right?

Save the date:  we will be decorating the church for the Advent season on Friday, November 30 th at 9am.  Please help us and we will feed you.  See? There IS such a thing as a free meal!  If you're really excited about Christmas, come on Thursday, at 9am and help put up the trees so they'll be ready for Friday.  We won't feed you, but we'll shake your hand.

Study-  The Women of Faith and the Senior High Girls Sunday school classes will join together to explore Annie Downs's Looking for Lovely  this fall (a 7 week study) .
"I want you to take every step of your life with excitement for where you are headed. And I want you to feel beautiful and confident as you do." But how? When the enemy whispers lies that we are not smart enough, pretty enough, or rich enough? Or are you too dumb, too loud, too quiet, too thin, too fat, too much or not enough? What if you don't have what it takes to be who you really want to be?" In Looking for Lovely, Annie F. Downs shares personal stories, biblical truth, and examples of how others have courageously walked the path God paved for their lives by remembering all God had done, loving what was right in front of them, and seeing God in the everyday-whether that be nature, friends, or the face they see in the mirror. Intensely personal, yet incredibly powerful, Looking for Lovely will spark transformative conversations and life changing patterns. No matter who you are and what path God has you on, we all need to remember the lovely, fight to finish, and find beautiful in our every day!

If you would like more information about this study or in mentoring the young ladies in our church, contact Jennifer Carkeet or Jennifer Wright ([email protected]). We will begin the study Aug. 19! Books will be available for purchase in class.

Pray with Your Family & Friends
Teach me always to believe in my power to return to life, to hope, and to You, God, no matter what pains I have endured, no matter how far I have strayed from You.
Give me the strength to resurrect my weary spirit.
Revive me, God, so I can embrace life once more in joy, in passion, in peace. Amen.

-Rabbi Naomi Levy
