COVID-19: Schools closing March 16
As you know, the public health crisis we are facing is unprecedented and evolving rapidly. In recent days and weeks, we have kept our schools open as long as possible, as recommended by state and local public health experts, and taken extraordinary measures to protect the health and safety of our students, staff, and families.

All public school districts in Sacramento County are taking action to close schools effective Monday, March 16 for a period of up to three weeks. This action has the full support of Sacramento County Public Health as a proactive measure to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. It is not in response to a confirmed case of the virus in our schools.

This decision is not made lightly; we also know that in addition to education, schools provide vital support to our communities, and these closures could have a major impact on our employees and families.

We understand that there will be many unanswered questions today. We thank you for your patience during this time of uncertainty. We are committed to working with all of our students, families, employees, and community members, including regular communication throughout the weekend, during this transition to an extended closure.

The Superintendent and Cabinet, in collaboration with our employee group leadership, will be working through the weekend to finalize plans for our extended closure. Here's what to expect in the coming days:
  • We will notify employees before Monday whether they need to report to work, and if so, what their specific roles will be.
  • Teachers are asked not to give any new student assignments at this time. The District will continue to explore its potential plans for remote learning or enrichment.
  • We will notify families how they can access resources, meals, and anything else to support their students during this time.
  • We will notify families how to pick up student medications, necessities, and other materials that may be needed.
  • There will be no outside use of our schools beginning immediately. This includes athletics, performing arts, and other uses.
  • We will provide regular updates to everyone via email, text message, our District website (www.fcusd.org/coronavirus) and social media.
Thank you again for your patience during this challenging time. We will provide regular updates throughout the weekend.

Sincerely,

Sarah Koligian, Ed.D.
