November 2018

Letter from the President

Over the past few months I have been asking each of you to Reach Out, Branch Out, Top Out. Today, I would like to share what myself, the Executive Team, board members, and chapter committee chairs have been doing for you - our members.

Reach Out: As a chapter, we are looking for ways to help members reach out, expand your network, and build relationships. One example, earlier this month we partnered with ASA Chicago for a program on Subcontractor Default Insurance. Two more opportunities coming up are the Holiday Social at the Morton Arboretum, and a Contracts 101 joint program with NECA in January. Reach out, learn more, and register for these events today!

Branch Out: Last month we wrapped up the 5th Midwest Regional Conference; our largest conference to date. This year's conference welcomed participants from seven chapters. Fifteen educational sessions and a half-day CFM Challenge provided plenty of opportunity for attendees to expand their knowledge and earn valuable CPE. A huge thank you goes out to conference co-chairs, Bill Reidinger and Chris VanTassel for their leadership, and the committee members who volunteered to make the event a success. A special thank you to Joe McLaughlin, CFMA National Chairperson, for taking time out of his schedule to attend and provide insight to what is happening nationally.

Last week, the program committee and board members met to plan a full calendar of programming and networking events for 2019. We are excited about the year ahead! A breakdown of topics is included below. Members will also receive a complete calendar in the coming months.

Top Out: Previously I asked our members to establish professional top out goals. Have you reached your goal? Are you taking advantage of everything CFMA has to offer to reach those goals?   As a chapter, we aim to increase membership and provide immeasurable value to our members. I don't know that it is possible to top out these goals; so we continue to aim higher.

Speaking of increasing membership; now is the time to join or introduce someone to CFMA! Join now and your membership will be good through March 2020! In addition, join before November 30 and receive free attendance and chapter monthly programs through March 2019! Our chapter membership is at an all-time high! Let's keep the momentum going into 2019 and Top Out as the largest CFMA chapter!

 Washington Marches Towards Retirement Reform

President Trump signed an executive order on August 31, 2018, that states: "It shall be the policy of the Federal Government to expand access to workplace retirement plans for American workers."  According to the 2017 report by the Pew Charitable Trust, 35% of private sector workers do not have access to a workplace retirement plan.  That translates to tens of millions of workers in the U.S. who can not save for retirement at work.  The executive order contains a provision that would help small employers who currently believe they cannot afford to sponsor a retirement plan to participate in a group type plan that gives them access to lower cost programs.  Read the full article here.

Guest speaker William Norris, Chief Investment Officer of CIBC Bank USA, will highlight trends, speak to issues affecting the economy and look ahead at how the economic growth and commercial construction in the Midwest will be impacted by the current fiscal state in Illinois, and policy changes in Washington.
