Chamber Communiqué
September/October 2018

"If people like you they will listen to you, but if they trust you, they'll do business with you."
-Zig Ziglar
Note from the Executive Director

Keep it Local with Small Business Saturday and Parade of Stores
There are several upcoming dates where consumers can keep their shopping dollars local, instead of leaking the tax dollars out of the community. At this time of year, many people are looking for “high ticket” items such as electronic equipment, computers, appliances or furniture. There are stores in Pagosa that offer these types of items and it is at this time of year that you can reap great savings by purchasing your items locally. Some Pagosa stores will be offering “Black Friday” specials. However, since the majority of retail in Pagosa Springs is considered small business, enjoy 2 weekends of special sales and savings as a consumer or a retail provider.
Small Business Saturday was started 9 years ago by American Express and officially adopted in 2010 with the event being held the first Saturday after Thanksgiving. This year, Small Business Saturday will be held on November 24. Businesses can take part of great marketing opportunities provided by Shop Small. Businesses can customize their logo and shopping advantages onto pre-designed materials. Simply go to www.americanexpress.com/us/small-business/shop-small/promote . You can download social media campaign material, poster material and even a website decal or badge that you can add to your website highlighting your participation in this event. Many stores will be offering specials on November 24; expand this shopping advantage to the following weekend when the Parade of Stores takes place from November 30 to December 2. Here are a few tips for participating businesses:
*         Don’t compete with weekends choosing one event over the other. Participate in both and increase exposure to your store.
*         Offer bounce back coupons on the November 24 th event for the Parade of Stores event. Continue offering the savings!
*         Don’t just offer savings on your already marked down or sale items. Don’t offer your customers something they can get any day of the week. Make the events special.
*         Use your own social media, website and other advertising outlets to promote these events. Build on the advertising engaged by the Chamber for the Parade of Stores and expand your the marketing efforts.
The Chamber will be handing out participation materials for stores to display during the Parade of Stores weekend. We will also be advertising through posters, print, social and other marketing avenues. Take advantage of the special co-op advertising options that are being offered. Encourage residents both locally and regionally to shop Pagosa. The stores are gearing up for the winter sale season, so shop owners and shoppers should take advantage of all the effort going into shopping local. Participate in Small Business Saturday and customize your own marketing material and then take advantage of the Chamber sponsored Parade of Stores. For more information about Parade of Stores, contact Katie Dobbins at the chamber at 264-2360.
Let’s keep it local Pagosa!

Sincerely,

Mary Jo Coulehan
Executive Director

Community Development Corporation Update

One Step at a Time
Many communities are just waiting for that Amazon, FaceBook or Google headquarters to come charging onto the economic development scene in their community and save the day. Those wins take years of development and are often that “one in a million” opportunity. Economic development is often a slow process requiring much planning and baby steps to make a difference in the community. Here are some baby steps that the Community Development Corporation or CDC has tackled in 2018.
Broadband:  Broadband is not a luxury, it is a necessity for home or business these days. Whether telecommuting, running a home based business or just communicating or streaming, this amenity is a requirement. The CDC was tasked with working to improve broadband capability in Archuleta County. They hired a knowledgeable contractor and worked with the town and the county to research and then ratify a former contract in relation to an important network called SCAN. Without this contract, an important part of Pagosa’s broadband fiber structure was in jeopardy. The CDC also hired a consultant to assess the current broadband capacity and develop a plan to improve underserved or unserved areas and areas that are “over capacity”. That report was just finalized at the end of October and plans for a 3-5 year infrastructure upgrade is being worked on. These improvement plans will not be possible without the financial community support from the town and the county. The organization is waiting for these governmental agencies to finalize their budgets for 2019.
Business Assistance:  One little known service the CDC provides is business assistance with the partnership of the Chamber of Commerce. Between these two agencies, business can get assistance on business start-up or expansion ideas or systems, business plans, or be directed to another partnering agency to assist with licensing, zoning or building, finance, or a myriad of other business needs. In 2018, over 32 inquiries for assistance were addressed with many of these businesses seeking multiple meetings. Of those consulted with, 7 have opened businesses creating at least 9 jobs. One more business in the works will create another 10 jobs with several more businesses still looking to relocate to Pagosa.
The CDC has also been involved in revising the Town’s Comprehensive Plan – an 8 month process, and assisting on the Housing Workgroup and Build Pagosa group through grant assistance and its partnership with the Chamber. Ground work has been laid and the hope that some of the processes will move a little faster in 2019 for more obvious economic improvement results. Are you interested in any of the topics mentioned in this article? Do you have a business talent that you could share with other business owners and spend a little time as a consultant? Do you want to help move Pagosa forward economically? Visit the website, www.pagosaspringscdc.org or contact the Chamber, (970) 264-2360 for more information on how you can be a CDC member investor.

Ironically, common sense has never been all that common. If it were, banks would only sell you what you need. Everything would be fair, without all of the fine print. And, when your banker looked at you, they wouldn’t just see a number, they’d see a dad, or a mom, or a graduate, or a business owner. That’s why at Community Banks of Colorado we understand the complexities of people’s lives and offer simple solutions. We call it banking with common sense, and we invite you to do the same.

Community Banks of Colorado is a division of NBH Bank, which is a subsidiary of National Bank Holdings Corporation (NYSE: NBHC) and operates a network of banking centers throughout Colorado, Kansas, Missouri and Texas.

Our beliefs
We believe common sense is more than just banking.
We believe in finding financial solutions that cater specifically to your needs.
We believe in your future, and are invested in helping you get there. That means looking at you and not seeing a number, but rather the dad, mom, graduate, business owner, or entrepreneur that you are.
We believe life is complex enough, and banking should be simple.
We believe in straight talk, personal attention, and sensible, clear decisions from real people.
No jibber jabber, no smoke and mirrors and no passing the buck.
We believe that personal attention should come from real people. Not a machine.
If this is what you believe in, then you’re definitely right for us. And we might be the right bank for you.
