ADVANCED PLACEMENT NEWS

Juniors and seniors taking Advanced Placement courses met with Mrs. Crisci and Ms. Wilkinson on October 17 and October 18 to review policies regarding AP courses. First, students were reminded that taking the College Board's AP Exam in May is a course requirement. Students who do not take the AP exam will have their transcripts adjusted to reflect that they completed an honors level course. The fee for the AP exams is due on November 16, 2018. Students received an AP order form at their meeting or in homeroom. The earlier collection allows us to order the correct exams in a timely fashion, and prepares us for changes in ordering procedures that will be implemented by the College Board in 2019. Second, we explained that CCHS has students take a practice AP exam we refer to as the "Mock AP Exam." These are scheduled outside of school hours by each AP teacher and take place during April and May.

The vast resources provided by the College Board were reviewed. All students should create an account with the College Board/ AP program by visiting https://apstudent.collegeboard.org/home

Students were introduce to the various honor designations for outstanding achievement on three or more exams. More information on the AP Scholar Awards is found at https://apscore.collegeboard.org/scores/ap-awards/ap-scholar-awards/.

STUDENT AFFAIRS NEWS

Freshman Transition
Freshman students will be receiving permission slips this week for the Freshman retreat on Dec 4th-6th. Each freshman will attend the retreat on only one of the days with their religion class. Our Freshman retreat will focus on the history of CCHS and the charism of Mercy, instilled by the Sisters of Mercy who founded the school. We will travel back to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Camden, the location of the original CCHS building and engage in works of service for Cathedral Kitchen and Joseph's House during the day. Seniors in our Christian ministry class will also be facilitating sessions throughout the day. We ask for your prayers for this retreat. Permission slips and a $2 busing fee will be due back to Religion class by November 9th. We also will be asking for donation of supplies for some of our service projects via a SignUp Genius in the coming week.  We greatly appreciate your support.

Senior Graduation News: Diploma Forms
Seniors received important graduation paperwork in homeroom for their legal name as it should appear on their diploma. These forms are due Nov 2nd to their homeroom teacher and must have a parent/guardian signature verifying the information.   Thank you for your assistance.

Student Activities

Senior Halloween Costume Day- October 31, 2018

Seniors were granted the privilege of dressing up in costumes for Halloween. However the following guidelines are listed below and have been posted in senior homerooms.

COSTUMES SHOULD BE INTERESTING NOT FOR EXAMPLE COME IN JEANS AND SAY "I AM A PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENT" OR COME IN ATHLETIC GEAR AND SAY "I'M A SPORTS FAN." CONSIDER DEVELOPING A THEME WITH YOUR FRIENDS OR DESIGN YOUR OWN UNIQUE & TASTEFUL COSTUME. YOU MUST HAVE A LEGITIMATE COSTUME THAT IS EASILY RECOGNIZED WITHOUT THE USE OF THE PROHIBITED ITEMS LISTED BELOW.

FOR SAFETY, SECURITY & MODESTY REASONS
THE FOLLOWING ITEMS CAN NOT BE PART OF YOUR COSTUME:
  • MASKS OF ANY KIND/FACE PAINT THE COVERS YOUR WHOLE FACE
  • SWORDS, KNIVES, CLUBS, BOWS & ARROWS OR ANY OTHER WEAPONS
  • CLOTHING THAT DOES NOT COVER YOU APPROPRIATELY (TANK OR HALTER TOPS, BARE BACKS OR MIDRIFFS, OR TOGAS) OR THAT PROMOTES NEGATIVE RELIGIOUS, RACIAL OR POLITICAL TONES.
  • NO ROLLER BLADES, SKATE BOARDS, CARTS OR ANY TYPE OF VEHICLE
MODESTY & DECENCY ARE A MUST AND STUDENTS WITH INAPPROPRIATE COSTUMES WILL BE SENT HOME.

STUDENTS OPTING NOT TO DRESS IN COSTUME MUST WEAR THEIR UNIFORM.

Attendance- Early Dismissal Reminder

We ask that the Early Dismissal policy is followed and the school receives advance written notification.   Below is the Early Dismissal policy which is included in the Student Handbook on page 25.

Early Dismissals
Early dismissals are discouraged since academic success is paralleled with regular school attendance. However, when a situation necessitates an early dismissal, the following procedure must be followed:
  • A note, stating the reason for the dismissal and signed by a parent, must be submitted to the Student Affairs Office prior to 8:15 am. The time of the dismissal should be included in the note as well.
  • An administrator will determine whether the request will be granted and may phone the parent/guardian to verify the request. If granted, an early dismissal pass will be issued at that time.
  • Phone call requests for early dismissals will not be accepted once the school day begins.
  • A student will be recorded as absent for a full day if he/she misses more than 4 class periods. A student will be recorded as absent for 1/2 day if he/she misses 4 or less class periods.
  • Students returning to school following an early dismissal should present an official note to the Office of Student Affairs upon his/her return to school.
  • Students may not leave the building or school grounds during school hours without an early dismissal pass, nurse's dismissal pass, or administrative permission.
  • Students are not permitted to contact their parents directly to ask them to come to school to pick them up because they are not feeling well. Students must see the nurse if they are not feeling well and she will determine if it is necessary for the student to go home. Students who contact their parents via cell phone, without permission, will be subject to demerits. If a parent comes to school to pick up a student, it will be considered a regular, not nurse, early dismissal.
  • Parents and students may not request more than five (5) early dismissals per year.
